Vicente, yes. Narco gangs. No foreign tourists was the report. Nine + dead, bodies along the highway at the gas station.

David K - 5-20-2023 at 09:23 PM

After this was reported about being a Can-am caravan, I texted Cameron and Heli-Jim, they both eventually replied that they are fine and far south of there.

mtgoat666 - 5-20-2023 at 10:13 PM

The event was a utv ride from Ensenada to san Felipe, many participants, name of event is Cachanillazo. News article said the attackers were Cártel Arellano Félix (CAF). Attack was on Hwy 1 right in center of town

So senseless - what's wrong with people

" Participants in a road race event about 90 miles south of the border were ambushed by gunmen who killed 10 of the drivers and wounded nine others, the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office said.

The victims were parked in their “dune buggy”-style race cars when several armed men jumped out of a late model silver SUV and started firing at the vehicles, according to a news release issued by the AG’s office."

Last night I had an email exchange with 'bajatrailrider' Larry, who is OK!

mtgoat666 - 5-21-2023 at 08:17 AM

The news reports today say:
“A struggle between members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) -allied with the Arellano Félix cartel- and the Sinaloa Cartel, was what led to the massacre recorded this afternoon in the town of San Vicente,…

Unofficial data confirm this, and point to one of those murdered as Alonso Arámbula Piña alias El Trébol or El Loncho, 34, related to the Arellano Félix Cartel.”

+++

Pretty outrageous that the cartels think it is appropriate to wage their battles in city center during a public event!

I'm confused were cartel people participating in the UTV rally?

The previous statements make it sound like they targeted the riders?

Sounds that way to me. An AFC guy was killed so perhaps the Sinaloa Cartel guys were doing the shooting. I won't be surprised if details aren't published.

shari - 5-21-2023 at 03:39 PM

Cameron's tour Trail of Missions were here having lunch when the massacre happened in San Vicente. The attack on the Mexican rally group was very well coordinated and targeted rival cartel members...nothing to do with off road racing safety.
Word on the street is there is a struggle for control of the area and there may be retaliation.

Unfortunately the stories in the USA press didnt mention it was a cartel hit so people will just think off road racing is dangerous and this will cause more folks not to want to visit Baja....tourism is waaaay down for us so this is rather sad.

surabi - 5-21-2023 at 03:59 PM

"Nothing to do with off-road racing safety" unless participants are cartel members.

The cartel hit was carried out in the middle of a utv fun run, in center of town mid-afternoon on a Saturday… rather brazen of the hit men to choose that location to attack, such an open and public area.

Of the 10 dead and 9 wounded, how many were bystanders caught in the crossfire?

The people of Mexico need to rise up, and elect politicians that will clean house and run the cartels out of existence. Too many politicians are owned by cartel. Too many Mexicans accept the cartels and their violence.

Bajatrailrider is all good and out ridding today.

Goat, what they did was make a very tactical decision based on war tactics. They picked a place where everyone would be getting out of their cars and grouping together, good call for high causality hit. They aren't worried about collateral damage. As you point out, very little if any repercussions for them.

The Mexican people, police and politicians will pretend the massacre never happened. Actually, they don’t pretend it did not happen, they just don’t care that it happened, happened before, and will happen again. Fiddling while their Rome burns. Confidant and nonchalant about the loss of their civility, the end of their civil society,… “what, me worry?”

There was a similar event today in Tepic, Nayarit (as best as I could tell today off the TV).
There really should be outrage, but fear or bribes keep mouths closed.

We still don't know who kidnapped helpless Mary Ann Humfreville in the middle of the night and nobody in town will volunteer what they know.
Some closure would be welcomed by family and friends.

One thing I'd be willing to bet is that scores of heavily armed Mexican police in bullet-proof vests wouldn't stand around in the hallway for an hour and 15 minutes while classrooms full of little children were being massacred and traumatized for life.

"Closure" is a ridiculous notion. One of those words bandied about that many relatives of victims find offensively facile. Even if the perpetrators are caught and punished and you find out what really happened, it does nothing to lessen the pain of losing a loved one to murder, especially if the killing wasn't instant and was preceded by terrorizing the victim.

Majority of Mexican cops are on cartel bankroll… the cartels rule the country because the cops stand around and do nothing. Thousands of adolescents have disappeared in Mexico, and govt/cops don’t give a chit. Sometimes the cops themselves are disappearing the kids.
Heck, even mex presidents are puppets of cartels. El Chapo was puppet master of Pres Calderon.

surabi - 5-21-2023 at 10:31 PM

I wasn't saying Mexican cops are some good guys, Goat, or that what the cartels get away with is in any way okay, but turning a blind eye to cartel business and actions and being on the take isn't in the same category as standing around letting one insane teenager massacre a classroom full of 9 and 10 year olds. There's a difference between being corrupt and being an inept coward.

Sadly, it will be generations before there's any getting rid of the cartels. You're dealing with a culture that has a whole genre of music dedicated to portraying violent criminals as heroes. Ever paid attention to how they change the names of movies in Mexico to something violent or highly sexual? There's a little known Russell Crowe movie I watched. The name of the movie in English is "Tenderness". The Mexican bootleg was entitled "Asesino".

I was thinking the same thing. I bet cartel guys won't gather at a publicized event anymore.

I'm also thinking the Sinaloa Cartel did the shooting, taking out members of the New Generation / Tijuana Cartels. Hopefully, this was a decisive shoot-out.

How long has the fighting for the drug plazas (in this case the TJ plaza) been going on? Forty years?

PaulW - 5-22-2023 at 10:24 AM

There were two target UTV drivers from a rival cartel entered in the event. The shooters from the other cartel arrived in an SUV and started shooting.
Both targets escaped with no injuries. Count now is 11 dead.

It is likely that many of the dead bystanders had no idea they were in proximity of gangsters.
Can you advise tourists how to recognize gangsters when they are in public space?

Can you recognize, or at least suspect, gang members when you're in the United States?

advrider - 5-23-2023 at 08:06 AM

Did not realize any innocent bystanders were harmed, I thought it was only cartel that were killed. That is what my comment was based on. Often times gangs, cartels and thugs associated mostly with people in their organization to lessen the chance of outsiders gaining intel and access to them and their inner workings. Just my experience.

No. Members of organized crime range from cops in uniform (e.g LAPD rampart), to suburban dads in suit/tie, to street thugs in Compton.
Cartel guys in Mexico come in all types.
Don’t buy into stereotypes that cartel guys have a stereotypical look.
On Saturday in San vicente, the cartel guys were dressed up in riding clothes, and looked same as baja nomad off-roaders.

Unless someone has obvious gang tattoos, I don't know how you would. You don't think cartel guys ever wear suits and ties? Plenty of them look like respectable businessmen.

"we're all in on it"

PaulW - 5-23-2023 at 10:53 AM

Silly question.
They do not want the public to identify them.
Cartel members look like any other typical Mexican man.
For the race scene they own and drive the top of the line vehicles, but that makes them fit in quite well and be undistinguished.

It is only when they are in combat mode that they can be identified by their automatic rifles in full display.

surabi - 5-23-2023 at 12:20 PM

Oh I doubt they all engage in street combat, complete with camo and automatics. There's the head honchos who give the orders and the foot soldiers who do the dirty work.
