FORT MYERS BEACH, FL (AP) -- A Lee County woman accused of running over and killing a man a decade ago in Fort Myers Beach has been captured in
Mexico.
FBI and Mexican officials took Suzanne Bainbridge-Beith into custody late Monday in Baja California, less than 100 miles south of the US border. She
is charged with DUI manslaughter in the death of 28-year-old Mitchell Sams. She disappeared more than eight years ago after failing to appear for a
court hearing.
FBI officials say Bainbridge-Beith is now being held in San Diego. Lee County Deputy Sheriff Charles Ferrante says Mexican officials failed to deport
her in the past for what they called an accident. FBI officials say Mexican laws have since changed.
Bainbridge-Beith struck and killed Sams in April 1995 in front of his parents condominium. FBI records show that her blood-alcohol level was nearly
twice the legal limit.
