any nomads got any info on this spot,a buddy of mine keeps telling me about these great surf trips he used to take down to this spot....

woody with a view - 5-4-2005 at 04:20 PM

stopped in for 2 days early last june. it was 1' and there was NO other campers. houses yes. and a million LOUD birds.

rts551 - 5-4-2005 at 08:18 PM

Most people think it is Ted Williams... but it was really a guy named Ted Willis and it got misinterpreted along the way. But that does still not take anything away from the area.

June/July can be windy so be prepared

baja sur....fing?

eetdrt88 - 5-5-2005 at 10:15 AM

well i am looking for some warm water waves, nothing to big for the kids and I.

bajajudy - 5-5-2005 at 02:17 PM

Zippers
yea but the waves are still there

guerosurfero - 5-5-2005 at 03:31 PM

Abreojos will pick up any south swell. There are some quality breaks. However, if you're looking for warm water there, you've gotta wait until late june at the earliest to trunk it.

And grover's right, the elements are usually harsh, so bring shelter.

Brrr,Looks like dry-suit material. I didn't realize that narrow coastal swath of cold water really existed. Is that because of deep water upwelling?

guerosurfero - 5-5-2005 at 06:01 PM

that's right sharks.... the same winds that make camping a dirty pleasure cause upwelling and the water to be cold until summer kicks in 'round July. The California current does it's part as well to funnel crisp cold water from central california right into central baja. Bring your full suit during winter and spring. :D

latitude26n - 5-5-2005 at 07:31 PM

By mid-summer and on, one day of south wind can make
the water temp jump up 7 to 8 degrees.

Blows out the waves, but ahhh the water feels good.

bahia ascuncion?

eetdrt88 - 5-8-2005 at 11:57 AM

are abreojos and bahia ascuncion similar?? i see that its pretty close by...

bajajudy - 5-8-2005 at 12:03 PM

Guess driving down to the los cabos area is out of the question. But for future reference "Old Man's Beach" in front of the Surf Hotel is where they give lessons here and would be great for kids and you. There are two different breaks but I am not surf savvy so cant give any better description.
AND the surf is up. First sign...every rental car has at least one board on top. Second sign...on my morning walk the waves were huge. Looked like out of the south-southeast and pounding.
Buenas Olas

good surf but has some danger to it as reef bottom and some rocks stick up in places...also gets very big on some south swells.....there are some sand beaches that will work for kids...no facilities and no bathrooms ....sort of an international place with an assortment of traveling surfers ....easy drive in.... any vehicle can make it.....in summer short wetsuit will be the call...lots of sun and daily wind blowing side/offshore......

Surfer Jim,

eetdrt88 - 5-11-2005 at 11:16 AM

is that abreojos or ascuncion that you are talking about???

surfer jim - 5-11-2005 at 11:56 AM

abreojos.....ascuncion will have some waves but probably not as good and hard to get to and difficult to find a good break ...not sure how winds will hit there....those big points/bays don't usually get the best surf even though they look good on the maps.....

Mexitron - 5-11-2005 at 09:26 PM

We were at Abreojos in 1997 when Hurricane Linda swung by--couldn't tell how big the surf was because it was breaking so far out--giant washing machine. Air temps during that El Nino year trip were 85 at night, 105 during the day....water was 85 degrees!

rts551 - 5-12-2005 at 08:13 PM

hurricanes usally escape the area... but that year it took my roofing off

Bad thing was that everyone from Campo Rene was spending the night.

and it came through about 10 PM -- hard to sleep in all that water

rts551 - 5-13-2005 at 06:33 PM

Now you will have a nice new one .

anybody been down to abreojos recently???

eetdrt88 - 8-18-2005 at 09:15 PM

i'm trying to plan a late summer, early fall surfing trip...just wondering how its been down there recently?

surfer jim - 8-19-2005 at 07:11 PM

I think any of the south swells should work there.....and I doubt if anything else would get in there....better do it before mid October at the latest....
