Neal Johns - 6-20-2005 at 09:13 AM

Marian (W2) is taking me! Staying on the beach or in the boonies.

Debra - 6-20-2005 at 09:26 AM

HA! (now's my chance to bump her off.....he,he,he.....)

I'll be staying with Neal.....; > )

At this point.....

Hook - 6-20-2005 at 10:00 AM

I am a go. Plan on leaving Thursday night and staying in the La Salina area and then driving south on Friday at first light. Probably coming back on Monday.

Are there plans for an excursion up the Arroyo?

I will not be staying in town......count me in at the boonies camp. Would prefer somewhere near where Arroyo El Rosario meets the Pacific......but I have never been out there.:?:

Howzabout a boonie potluck on one of the nights?:light:

BTW,

Hook - 6-20-2005 at 10:25 AM

It would be nice if we could get the final schedule of events posted sometime soon. I suppose that could affect where I stay.

wilderone - 6-20-2005 at 01:30 PM

I plan to go, leaving San Diego early Sat. am. I'll hang around town for the remainder of the day, but camp in the boonies, either north or south of town. Maybe we could get a small "boonies" group??? Will also see what's going on Sunday, but will play it by ear, and plan to continue to mission project, but will need to carpool from Santa Inez. If it doesn't work out that way, I've got several Plan "B"s.

surfer jim - 6-20-2005 at 05:25 PM

Camping is the way to go !!!....looks like I won't be alone out there....I want to do some exploring around the area....for me it will be better than hanging around town too much....anyone have some sidetrips in mind?.....

I also wanted to "carpool" the final leg to the mission...my truck is too long and too low to do much rock crawling....

my origional post had an incorrect date for arrival...thanks for the PM.....

David K - 6-20-2005 at 05:25 PM

The festival events are all afternoon & evening which leaves the mornings free to do excursions, beach, relax, or socialize.

There will be a lot going on, Antonio and the towns people are working thier butts to make this FIRST festival a success. It WILL impress them GREATLY to see many of us NorteAmericanos interested in their culture! An even bigger impact will be if they see many of us as members of Doug's Baja Nomads. Future good personal relations are bound to be established by our support.

Options for overnight:
Motels (Baja Cactus Motel, Las Cabanas Motel at Espinoza's next door, and down the street a bit is the Sinai/Sinahi Motel, otherwise Las Pintas and Cielito Lindo are the next closest at 30 min. north).

RV Parking with hookups at the Motel Sinahi/Sinai

Dry Camping at La Bocana, 5 miles from town (where Rio el Rosario reaches the sea, see photo) or at La Lobera $7 , 9 miles from town, where we will go for an excursion... see my trip report and photos in the trip report forum from last month.

Things to see...

David K - 6-20-2005 at 05:47 PM

Either as a group or solo, listed by distance from town:

Mision Rosario Arriba, Museum, Mision Rosario Abajo, La Bocana Beach, Punta Baja, El Cardonal (cactus forest past El Castillo), La Lobera sea lion crater and shoreline with possible sea food restaurant, El Camino Real trail, La Vibora road to Rio San Juan de Dios and Sauzalito copper mines, Las Pintas fossil and petrograph grotto.

All of these sites are in my web site or posts here on Nomad, for your viewing... particularly: http://vivabaja.com/1104 and http://community-2.webtv.net/thebaja/505

Those folks without transportation (ie. in a motorhome or low passenger car) will be able to ride with others OR ride in a van that Antonio hopes to obtain for the excursions!

I see two group caravan trips based on time available (Sat. and Sun)...
A) See both mission sites, the town museum, and a ride out to Punta Baja OR La Bocana.
B) La Lobera... possible sea food feast served.

With a group, the longer day trips (a:El Cardonal, La Vibora & Sauzalito; or b:El Camino Real & Las Pintas) will likely be full day long trips... as single self guided trips they could be done in a half day+ however.

Photo of El Camino Real, near the Km. 80/San Carlos & Las Pintas road at Mex. 1...

David K - 6-20-2005 at 05:53 PM

La Lobera underground entrance for sea lions, and the sea food restaurant (may be open for our group)...

David K - 6-20-2005 at 06:01 PM

La Lobera dramatic coastline! Campers welcome ($7)... This is 6 miles north of El Rosario and 3 good dirt miles west-then south-then west (take left at only junction, ignore keep out signs). Unmarked turnoff is at KM 47 1/2... see my report at: http://forums.bajanomad.com/viewthread.php?tid=10833

Neal,

I thought that I was the ONLY one that you would agree to camp close to water's edge for.!!?? Now I'm reading that you'll stay ON THE BEACH for Marian????

It's a good thing I can't make it.

Watch out for Debra. She's a tricky one.

Debra, you know what to do...

That's my girl!
Don't worry about a thing, David. Trust Me!:bounce:

wilderone - 6-21-2005 at 08:40 AM

David, La Lobera looks interesting for camping. Saw your pics - is there some sand and a little shelter for camping, or is it a rocky, exposed (windy?) bluff? Is there anything else close to that accessible for camping?

Hey, David.....

Hook - 6-21-2005 at 08:40 AM

.....you had mentioned listing the sites by their distance from town. Where can I find that?

Lobera and La Bocana look incredible......any shots of Punta Baja?

pappy - 6-21-2005 at 09:23 AM

surfer jim- i may very well be in on that trip.will let you know for sure as time gets closer.

surfer jim - 6-21-2005 at 03:05 PM

pappy...abreojos?....sounds good to me....no "set" plans on anything for me...and it is a long way off to plan too much anyway....

La Lobera: There is a large, unprotected parking area with trash cans and an outhouse. The caretaker (who called himself 'Hernan Cortes') said campers were welcome and that he prides himself in keeping the area spotlessly clean. In July, you may not need any protection... as any wind will probably be welcome! No sand, just sandstone cliffs and shelves... lots of great tide pools!

I will say that La Bocana will be a nicer spot if beach sand and swimming is what you seek. There are no facilities there, but Antonio says he will have a porta potty, trash cans, and a security gaurd stationed there... to protect your camp while you are in town for the festival or on a day tour... Pretty nice?!

On a map... or Baja Almanac... Let me help:
Mision Rosario Arriba, as you head out on Mex. 1, (still in town) a big blue sign points left... it is just a block or so uphill.

Museum, in El Rosario Abajo about a mile from Mex. 1 at the sharp curve... go left across the river and drive west. Museum is on your left.

Mision Rosario Abajo, just past the museum... on the right.

La Bocana Beach, if in a 4WD, past the mission and continue west about 4 miles from Mex. 1. If in a 2WD then stay to the right after leaving Mex. 1, past homes, then uphill past dump to top, then fork left back down to river valley to beach. About 5.5 miles from Mex. 1.

Punta Baja, is about 9-10 miles from Mex. 1 via graded road. Turn left about a mile past the museum.

El Cardonal (cactus forest past El Castillo), also about 9 miles form the curve in town... Go across the bridge southbound on Mex. 1 and turn left at the far side of the bridge... see Almanac... it is up a side valley to the right (Rio San Juan de Dios)... Cardon Cactus forest.

La Lobera sea lion crater and shoreline with possible sea food restaurant, this is exactly 9 road miles from Baja Cactus Pemex... 6 miles north, then 3 dirt miles west-south-west.

El Camino Real trail, 14 miles from Baja Cactus & Mama Espinoza's turn south on the San Carlos road (KM 80 1/2) go about a mile+ to small dirt road going right... more details in my trip report and web page http://vivabaja.com/1104

La Vibora road to Rio San Juan de Dios and Sauzalito copper mines, pass the Cardonal side road and continue east...

Las Pintas fossil and petrograph grotto, 14 miles from El Rosario to the Punta San Carlos road, then 18 miles south to side road going left past 'Malvar' in Almanac... about 7 miles in. GPS handy...

Photo of Punta Baja on the road leading to the point. Water on left and right... I took this in July, 2000 in LdB's truck.

Festival

John M - 6-22-2005 at 10:22 AM

Barbara and I are going to be there, arriving we think on Thursday. John M.

Not much interest in a boonie potluck, huh?

Hook - 6-22-2005 at 04:19 PM

Surely you all aren't eating at....gulp......Mama's?

IS there a good sit-down type ristorante in ER that serves good food AND adult beverages........or, at least looks the other way at a poorly concealed, caguama-shaped brown bag?

I could hit the Ensenada fish market for a mess of shrimp or oysters or ????? Heck, even Baja style fish tacos aren't hard on a Coleman stove.

I really don't enjoy bagging on Mama's......in fact, someone should suggest to whomever is running the joint now that the festival would be an excellent opportunity to publicly "right the ship", as it were........you know, give good service......give back exact change and lower prices to a more reasonable level.:light:

David K - 6-22-2005 at 07:04 PM

There will be a lot of food served... a taste of the town... Wait to hear back from Antonio... It is still a month away (from today)!

Otherwise, your plan sounds great Hook.

Debra - 6-22-2005 at 09:48 PM

I'm always up for a potluck....the problem is getting it together without knowing where everyone will be staying. Are most of the camping people staying at the RV parK? Boondocking? Where? How many are expected?

David, without knowing the area it's going to be really hard to get organized me thinks......one thing I worry about is parking near Baja Cactus to even check in and find out where to go. I think I'd better get there a day or two early!

wilderone - 6-23-2005 at 08:45 AM

I'm thinking about El Cardonal for boonie camping - the beach sounds nice, but I assume will be full of people for this event. The sand may pose a problem too, and I don't want any hint of a problem in that regard. Potlucking for Sat. night might turn out to be wonderful. I could pick up some smoked fish in Ensenada for appetizers.

Bob H - 6-23-2005 at 09:11 AM

"La Lobera sea lion crater and shoreline with possible sea food restaurant, this is exactly 9 road miles from Baja Cactus Pemex... 6 miles north, then 3 dirt miles west-south-west."

David, this looks like a good place to camp! If Antonio is going to have security around this area, and that resturant is open (Antonio should talk to them) we might just camp out over there! Place looks great.

Debra - 6-23-2005 at 11:43 AM

Here we go again.....I hope we don't annoy the non-attenders as we did with the BBBB get-together, but, I know of no other way to figure this out except here.

So here goes....

Saturday night sounds like a good deal for a pot-luck (providing there is nothing else planned?) David can we find that out?

I'm leaving home (Seattle) next Friday so I'll be off-line after that unless I happen to plug in the lap-top along the way down.

I'll start a new "Pot Luck" thread for those interested (and those that are not can avoid it) Okay?

Must admit, I was one of the bigger critics....

Hook - 6-23-2005 at 01:05 PM

....of all the BBBB planning.

But it was the poor software that created those long strings that pushed other posts down, down, down.....

This software doesn't do that.

Still, maybe we should take the nuts and bolts of the boonie planning over to the Baja Trips board or ? when we finally get the details of the festival events.

Debra - 6-23-2005 at 01:12 PM

Okay Hook, happy to do that......no I just need to know how?

David K - 6-23-2005 at 05:37 PM

If you all want to move this thread off the General Baja forum, then may I suggest going to the Baja Events forum here on Baja Nomad... not the Trip Reports Forum.

I already posted the event news there, but photos cannot be posted from one's PC... So, I posted on General (here) to show the logo.

The security would be provided for those at the beach (La Bocana). La Lobera is on private land... and as I mentioned already, has a caretaker... 'Hernan Cortes' who will collect the $7 (70 pesos) and keeps the area clean.

It will not be lobster season during the festival, but it is possible other forms of sea food can be served there... Antonio was to talk with the owner of La Lobera about it.

5:45pm Thu. 6-23

David K - 6-23-2005 at 05:58 PM

Okay, I just got off the phone with Antonio... He is leaving for Rosario again tomorrow, having just returned a couple days ago (to Tijuana).

He will try and get online tonight to field some of your questions. Those who have emailed for event reservations (festival@bajacactus.com) will get official confirmation next week (Wed.?) with room #, etc.

The Sinahi (Sinai) has 30+ R.V. spaces with full hook ups, and only 2 are reserved so far...

LA LOBERA NEWS!: Do not plan on camping there until Antonio gets an okay from the owner 'Jimmy'... Antonio has not seen him recently. And even though 'Hernan Cortes' welcomed us, he is not the owner... We do have permission to visit there for a day trip tour, however... But, let's wait until Antonio gets an okay from Jimmy for over-nighting.

Stay tuned! :)

NEW La Lobera News!!!

David K - 6-25-2005 at 02:15 PM

I have been emailing with Rob, who is an onsite manager for Diamante Del Mar, and he offered to contact Jimmy (the owner of La Lobera) about camping and meals there...

With his permission here is the email note:

David, I talked to Martin, who is Jimmy's partner and he said no problem. The only thing he needs to know is about how many people will be there, so he can have food for the restaurant. I told him people would probably want coffee and breakfast stuff in the morning and then probably dinner stuff. Let me know an approximate head count and I will get that info to him..

David K - 6-27-2005 at 07:38 PM

topping (so Antonio can find all these threads easily tonight)
