Mars once in a lifetime view......

Debra - 6-26-2005 at 06:27 PM

I had an email today talking about Mars.....it said that it is supposed to look about the size of the moon and flaming RED! , best on 27Aug. (this email came from Alaska, so I would think the peak viewing would be on a different date in Baja?) Anyone heard about this? Info. would be appreciated! Thanks!

It's B.S. Look it up on the Urban Legends website.

(I fell for it too.)

I'm not sure exactly how I could describe someone who would actually believe something so obviously not possible, but if you're interested, I have some real estate for sale.

Everything is different in Baja, even the dates. This particular event I heard is happening Ma?ana!

Dates... They grow on trees, right.

Debra,I once thought that all army cars were made of rubber. I was a little kid and all my little army cars were made of rubber, sooooo.....

No disrespect meant. My point is, were all guilty of believing in the tooth fairy at times. Especially when we find that quarter under the pillow the next morning.

Yeah, right...

If you look at the site posted by Bob & Susan, you will see that Mars was the closest to earth it had been for many years...IN 2003! NOT 2005....it also says that it was the brightest object in the sky, next to the moon...Come on gang...if there is another object in our night sky that's bigger than our moon, we're all in real trouble!

Now for the straight scoop, updated every day, go to:

www.heavens-above.com

After you enter you home location - by city or lat/lon, you can get a picture of the night sky above you. The great part is, that you can check out the passes of the ISS (int'l space station) to see when it soars over your home location - there is even a map showing the transit over head. The chart shows when it's the closest to you...we've watched it many times, as it's the brightest 'satellite' like gizmo in orbit around earth, its spectacular to watch! It's really impressive in the early evening just after dusk, as you can clearly see it shining against the not-yet dark sky - almost spooky! If you get a chance to see it over Baja where you have a large horizon-to-horizon view with a dark sky, it's something to behold! Try it you'll like it.

You can use the Heavens Above site to change you 'home' location to predict when the ISS will fly over head down there.

There is lots of other neat stuff on the web site as well, so you can look a chart of the night sky to pick out Mars and the other planets when they are in view.

Thanks to everyone for making me feel stupid (or pointing out) just how guliable (sp?) or curious I can be. I did ask the person that sent me this email if we hadn't had a Mars thing just a year or so ago...(Brendan and I went out with the little telescope he had gotten from SANTA and checked it out. I thought it strange than no one here (Sat. Man) for one hadn't mentioned it.....but, had to ask. Besides, I was looking for an excuse to extend my upcoming trip (leaving Fri. or Sat.) until the end of Aug.!

BTW Mr. Bill......No one would have believed the comet "story" that lit up the night sky over the Puget Sound area one night not long ago either.......It's not something I'll ever forget. Glad I was alive for that one.

DEBRA

If it helps, I fell for it too.
I even marked it on my calendar.
I'll change that now.

Oso - 6-27-2005 at 08:02 AM

It was a very convincingly written e-mail. I did think the "big as the moon" part was hyperbole, but thought there might be some truth to part of it . I even posted it on another board. What can I say? It was a pedo de cerebro.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege Like me

Thanks guys....I did feel pretty stupid, but, Mike H. is in Baja and I couldn't ask him (he has the inside scoop on this stuff!) So I asked here...I was looking for "Sat. Man" did someone chase him off, or, is he traveling?

And Bruce, I don't see you as stupid, your spelling just sucks almost as much as mine!

As far as dates go......well, HUM? let's see, the earth is round and spins, and circles the Sun, so life experience tells me that when you are in a different long. or lat. things will look different......kind of like when I lived in Alaska and it never was dark during the summer, and kind of like in July in Baja....it get's dark at 7pm. while it is still dusk in Seattle at 10:30pm......Oh, and JR...this is a really weird concept I know....but, ya know what?, while I was in Austraila in July it was winter.....go figure??????

In summer 2003 the mars viewing was great... kids and I were camping on Shell Island and mars was so bright it reflected brightly on sea (no moon).

Satellite Man has been very busy with work... I got a recent email from him.
