rental car insurance

I need to get a rental car for about 30 days while in Los Cabos area and for another 30 days while near PV...have had conflicting info about getting Mexican rental car insurance, is it mandatory?? Does your Visa Platinum card insurance coverage suffice?? Is there anyplace where the rates aren't twice as much as what the day rate is for the car? Thanks

Mexico requires Mexican libility

Buy the liability and get out of jail (legal services)
Don't know about Visa, so call them.
Mainland insurance is different from Baja.
I only use rental insurance for rental car damage.

You will not be able to drive the car off the lot without purchasing Mexican liability to cover damage to others or their property. This insurance does not cover the rental vehicle. This 3rd party liability is required by Mexican law, and you will purchase it no matter what. This is the insurance the police care about if there is an accident. The only question is whether the company includes the cost in the rate they quote you. AVIS will include the 3rd party liability in their rate; others will not, so add $7.00-$10.00 a day to the rate the other companies quote you.

After that, your decision will be what to do about insurance to cover damage to the rental vehicle. You can purchase the insurance from the rental company. If you do, it will probably have a $1000.00 deductible and will add significantly to the rental rate.

You can let the insurance on your credit card cover it (call your credit card company to see what they offer and if you are satisfied with it.) The credit card company's insurance will probably have a $0.00 deductible and costs nothing.

You have decide what feels most comfortable to you. I like the idea of having American Express/Mastercard/Visa behind me if there is a problem. Others prefer having Mexican insurance and feel things will go more smoothly that way if there is a problem.
