I am attaching two c. 1880 photos of one of the 21 Franciscan missions in California. Which mission is shown in the two photos?

Another clue

academicanarchist - 10-16-2005 at 10:54 AM

Here is a shot of the site today. It is located in a city made famous by W.C. Fields.

Santiago - 10-16-2005 at 10:58 AM

"Atascadero"

Nope

academicanarchist - 10-16-2005 at 11:02 AM

Not Atascadero, which was the site of a state mental hospital. W.C. Fields mentioned the name of this town in many of his movies, probably because he liked the way it sounds.

Gilroy?

bajaden - 10-17-2005 at 12:30 PM

Looks a little like the mission at Carmel. Hard to tell with no town there. Its got a similar shape though.

Did you not read Jack Swords' post?

Response to Jack

academicanarchist - 10-17-2005 at 04:11 PM

Jack needs to be more specific. And it is not San Carlos-Carmel.

C'mon Robert...La Pur?sima Concepcion de Maria Santisima, original site. Destroyed by earthquake and rebuilt at another site. Both nearby Lompoc, CA.

Good photos...

Is there a valuable prize?

David K - 10-17-2005 at 05:11 PM

How about your new mission book Robert?

Is it out yet, how can we get an autographed copy???

If it has Baja missions in it, I will add ordering info. to my Baja Notebook, where other new Baja books are listed!

Jack and David

academicanarchist - 10-18-2005 at 01:09 PM

Jack. Not everybody is familiar with the first site or the history of the mission. The book is out. If you want to send me a copy, I will sign it and return it. I was not given anywhere enough copies to give to people I would like to. One of the photos of the first site of La Purisima, occupied 1788-1812, appears in my new book. The gully in the side of the hill behind the mission was most likely caused by the 1812 earthquake.

I will post a couple more photos that show the gash in the side of the hill.

I will post a shot of mission buildings on the main square at Santiago in Paraguay.

Robert, email me ordering details and a web link (if there is one) for your new book... I will add it to my Baja Notebook web site right away!

Post here on Nomad in the classified Miscl. section if it is an ad... Otherwise a story about it in the Baja Literature Forum on Nomad would be nice!
