Any Baja Road traveler who has driven south of Mulege the last few years has seen Carmelita's roadside restaurant. Catering mostly to truckers and
buses, the place is open 24/7. I stop there a lot around 5-6 a.m. on my way to the boat ramp...get 3 res burritos 'for the way' and eat them for
lunch with while out on the pond.
This morning I joined some fellows from Mulege and we had a fine breakfast of various omelettes and huevos rancheros. They were very, very good and
the prices won't break your pocketbook. I didn't see anything on the breakfast menu over $3.50. Fresh OJ, good coffee, and your choice of corn or
flour tortillas with a hearty breakfast is a good old-time deal. I bought an old friend breakfast and the bill was only about 80 pesos plus tip for
both of us.
Try this hearty fare on your travels. About 1/2 mile south of the Pemex. I wonder if there is any relation to the famous Carmelita of Jesus Maria?

we've stopped at Carmalita's below Mulege several times, and enjoy their food each time! On one stop last trip, we found some yummy 'tres leche'
cakes in the frig! My wife, Patricia, had never eaten any before, and she was a convert!
Another attribute of Carmalita's are the window screens on all the windows! Now that's a real step 'up' for a Mexican restaurant, in my opinion, and
much appreciated - as least most of the flys don't get in to share your food....

Thanks to Packoderm's suggestion on another post, here's a photo showing the outside of Carmelita's..a good idea for any such review. Makes it easy
for the Baja Nomad readers to spot the places.
One thing I really liked was the smile on our happy waitress. It took my mind off the egg hanging from Tecate John's beard.
p.s. Mike, you are up early..just saw your post now. Si..that is OBJ, Tecate John, and Richard on the Hill....who, coincidentally, all got out on
parole at the same time. Grizzled, aren't they?

Well. I won't go back. The food was, well, (IMHO) that it's typical roadside grub. But then again it's not my field!
Had the waitress been even semi-attentive I probably wouldn't comment so strongly.

try the saul's palapa just south of the turn to serenidad. always good for me.
Pomp - saw all those guys and others at the best new years party on the river, mulege marvs - quite a bash, but i was dead sick with a chest cold and
pooped out early, dad burnit!

Saul's La Palapa is always top-rate. He learned his trade well. I remember him from his Punta Chivato Hotel bartender days back when Bill Alvarado
owned the place. I had lunch there today...exquisite tacos and a hot cocoa..(hey, it's dang cold here!)
Also I should include Sophia's great coffee, beer, and soda stop next door to Saul's. This is called the Eleven-Seven Store. Stop by and chat with
Sophia because she is real sweetheart and the atmosphere at her counter is always cheerful. No food served, but a great place to hang out, have
coffee, chat, and buy some brews for the casa. You get a terrific view of the Cortez from her patio while having a free cup of coffee. She sells
chip, sodas, beers, snack items.

Thought I'd try it this morning on the way to Playa Coyote. Sat at the table for about 10 minutes waiting for a menu. After dropping (!!) the menu
off at the table, the waitress went and started chatting with several truckers there.
I waited another 10 minutes without any response from anyone there and finally gave up and left.
Went back up the road to La Palapa and had a wonderful breakfast and fine service.
Hasta La Vista Carmelitas!! Nunca Mas!!

La Palapa is always good, Wayne. Has been since Saul came here from Pta. Chivato many years ago and opened the roadside place and then partnered in
the Candil downtown with Martin M. family. We all eat at La Palapa a lot, some at El Candil, and he deserves a plug here, too. But we also enjoy
Carmelita's and have never waited for service there...especially when I stop in the early hours for a platter of burritos to go in the boat.
Hmmm.....maybe you weren't wearing your happy face before coming to mi casa?

FYI..the Reef downtown was a great stop last night for my wife and I. We had shrimp and scallop combos with a delicious garlic/oyster soup. Followed
by a killer carmel-crunch cheesecake. Bravo, Scotty.
