Northstar popup campers.

Mhach - 3-15-2006 at 02:32 PM

I read Bob & Janes post on their Northstar popup.
Anyone know how they attached it to the truck bed? Neal says to bolt it to the pick up bed along with the turnbuckles on the sides.
The dealer I talked to said it's not neccesary to bolt it down.
I suppose it would be cheap insurance to bolt it down just in case. It seems if it was bolted down the floor would hold tight while the upper stucture rocks and rolls thus straining the wall to floor attachments/joints.

Just off the top of my head------

-------I would take Neil's advice way before the dealers.

The Dealer maybe/probably is not knowledgable of Baja back-roads.

My personal Callen camper is bolted to the bed in 10 places, and has been doing fine for 26 years.

(However, the bed started to fall apart, and had to be re-inforced and rewelded about 3 years ago-----Ford F-250)

Mhach..

I have bolted through the floor in four places on my camper, then on both sides through the top of the "counter" down through the top of the bed walls on the truck. thus taking away alot of the sway you are worried about from floor to cieling..
Pain in the a$$ taking it on and off, but it aint goin nowhere when its on..

Mine is a 4 wheel pop up by the way not northstar.

Did you talk to Neal about the camper? Have you guys bought it already? John

Remember this??

Bob and jane - 3-16-2006 at 03:38 PM

We have never bolted our camper down. Maybe we don't go quite as off road as you folks. We've done San Felipe to Hwy 1, Agua Verde, Las Pocitas to San Evaristo and numerous side roads along the way. Lots of bone-crushing washboards. We finally got a chunk of 2 inch styrofoam insulation to buffer the camper at the front of the truck bed. We just use regulation tie downs. There is really not much problem with sway on a pop-up. We bungee the drawers shut and wedge the refrigerator door tight, but that's about it. Ours is just the length of the pickup bed, we opted out of the toilet. Don't even take a porta-potti, too much room and hassle. We've just cut the bottom out of a five-gallon bucket and bought a $5 plastic toilet seat at a garage sale. A shovel and a lighter to burn the toilet paper and you're in business. So to speak.

John M,
Yes we have that picture on the wall in our dining room.
You would'nt be John Marnell, he doesn't have a popup.
So why do tou have the photo

Bob and jane - 3-17-2006 at 06:24 AM

Bob and Susan,
If you are referring to my post regarding our "toilet" set up: Yup, I'm okay with that. I wrote the post. In fact, it seems quite decadent and downright luxurious. We spent decades using just the shovel, lighter and toilet paper. Getting older now, the joints aren't what they used to be. With this setup, I can move the "outhouse" every day. I've seen some beautiful sunrises..............................
Of course, we tend to camp in remote areas where privacy is not an issue.

Bob and Susan - 3-17-2006 at 07:08 AM

Does Aqua Verde have posted Rules???

What does the sign say???

Agua Verde Rules.....there are none.

Pompano - 3-17-2006 at 07:31 AM

Bob and Susan...That sign was just one of my own prank ones...NO SPITTIN'...NO CUSSIN'...NO SCRATCHIN'...ETC.

Agua Verde.......A good place for the old bucket, paper, and match.....or just Go Natural! Keep Baja Clean!

If you think Agua Verde is a great place to leave your droppings, check it out after Semana Santa. Everybody else has the same idea and the beaches are all covered with feces behind every bush. Thank god there are some good people who make it a point to clean up by at least burying the stuff in the sand. Thank god it's only once a year. I use a porta pottie and if I can't empty it at a trailer dump, I find a place way away from people to dig a hole. The porta pottie is nice because you don't have to put on your shoes in the middle of the night to go outside. I also use a pee bottle so I don't fill the porta pottie up too fast.

Looks like this post on Northstar Campers got changed to
TP! But that's OK as I have not seen any Northstars here in Alice Springs as we pause for a few hours as we explare the Australian Outback.
