Como se dice "Cool!"

bajalera - 4-27-2006 at 03:50 PM

My granddaughter says the equivalent among her classmates at Rosendo Robles is "buen' onda," but I don't really do a lot of chatting with third-graders.

How do Braulio, Oso, Roberto, Jesse and all you other speakers of good Spanish say that something is "cool"?

Tomas Tierra - 4-27-2006 at 04:20 PM

I'm not on your list, and far from a speaker of "good" spanish, but.....
I've heard the term "machine" used for something that is cool or maybe trick..Also "Machine rin" for super cool..Only in Baja though
Don't know the litteral translation, but someone else may..

'muy suave'

is a good way to express it in common tongue

bajajudy - 4-27-2006 at 04:50 PM

I thought you said. Que padre.

Bruce R Leech - 4-27-2006 at 04:59 PM

que padre

Oso - 4-27-2006 at 05:35 PM

There are lots of terms and like English slang, what's in and what's out depends on your "clika" (clique- social and generational group)

Suave, padre, a toda madre, chevere, chido= more my age group.

My wife is about to watch "Rebelde" one of her favorite soaps, all about adolescent students. I'll ask her to watch for some of their terms and get back to you.

the most common ways to say "cool" here on the west central coast is que cura (pronounced cooda) as well as the others above...que padre, chilo (pronounces cheelow) and of course MACHINE (prounounced...maaaacheen) this is also used to describe something that works well for example... if asked how the surf was...it could be machine...or a great party etc., or if somebody got beat up real bad it could also be said he got beat MACHINE.

Cool = curado, chido, chingon, padre, a toda madre, suave, perro, chingonsisimo, chevere, de pelicula, esta ca?on, pesado, esta aca, de aquellas, de aquellotas, puta, aguas, de pelos, poca madre.
I give up, there are so many ways to say cool, that as Oso said, it depends on your generational group.
Maybe if you were to ask a specific time to use the cool word?

Tomas Tierra - 4-28-2006 at 02:12 AM

Chingonsisimo..........Simon,aver!

Tomas Tierra - 4-28-2006 at 02:15 AM

Maaaaaacheeen Reeeen....

Oso - 4-28-2006 at 07:55 AM

Ana says the youngsters on "Rebelde" use "de pelos", quite a bit.

When in doubt, go to Amazon

Thanks for all those words.

"Machin" was a new one to me, but when I mentioned this to Steve [my son] he said this word had been popular when he was in grade school in La Paz, back in the '60s.

He thought maybe it's derived from "macho," because it seemed to be used only by boys.
