who is coming to LA Bay for New Years?

marla - 11-17-2003 at 05:41 PM

I am coming with my friend Laura and rugrats Michael and Sandy from Dec. 29 to Jan. 2. We will be at Camp Gecko. Who else is coming? Btw, how cold is it going to be?

Hi Marla,

Bedman - 11-17-2003 at 07:14 PM

Emma, Daisy and I will be there again this year. Our fourth in a row, I think. The weather has always been perfect. Warm mid 70's+ in the day and cool mid 50's at night. Camp fires after dark and in the am. (Magic Rocks are a favorite that time of year.)
New Years Eve there is usually a gathering at Doc's outdoor kitchen/cafe for a pot luck dinner and then for the night owls its iff to the Diaz's for drinks and the annual New Years Eve Town dance.

We'll see you then

Bedman

Mike Humfreville - 11-17-2003 at 07:43 PM

Mary Ann and I will be there.

Casa P. D. y C. - 11-17-2003 at 08:16 PM

We will be there, celebrating at Diaz's the entire evening, dancing in the New Year. Bedman, good to hear that you and Emma be there again this year.

That's the plan for my kids and I... Head south Dec. 26... See you all at Camp Gecko, I hope!

David A. - 11-18-2003 at 05:54 AM

Yvonne and I will be there along with my son Tim and his friend, they are driving from Iowa. This will be their first time that far south.

marla - 11-18-2003 at 11:13 AM

Cool! We are leaving 27th and staying at the Old Mill in San Quintin that night, then to Malarrimo in Guerrero Negro, hoping there might be whales in the lagoon to watch, then onto Gecko the 29th until Jan. 2....I have the big cabin yippee. See you there! Btw, what foodstuffs can we buy there and what do we need to bring with us?:

for david k

marla - 11-18-2003 at 11:16 AM

David, there is room in our back seat for one more kid, fyi, and I can get another headset for the video player...But we're not leaving till early a.m. 27th...

Edie H. - 11-18-2003 at 11:20 AM

Is there room for us too?? We've been wanting something to do over the holidays.......do we need reservations or can we just "barge" in???:?:

marla - 11-18-2003 at 11:51 AM

It's not a private party, just a gathering of Baja-lovers where all are welcome. Go to www.campgecko.com and email to see if they have cabins or palapas still available, depending on your needs....

Mike Humfreville - 11-18-2003 at 12:57 PM

Edie, if you are camping you should be able to get in without reservations.

HELLO EVERYONE!!!

BajaBabe - 11-18-2003 at 03:33 PM

I don't know if any of you guys recognize me (us) A.K.A. BajaBronco.

Anyways, I've been gone too long, and now I would like to get back into enjoying Baja with you and would LOVE to join THIS trip. We have never been to camp geko, but we well do some re-search. We are from san diego, so would be great if we can caravan, if hopully we can make it!

Thanks!

Edie H. - 11-18-2003 at 06:33 PM

Yes, Mike, we would be camping....but it's been a few years since we've been there so not sure exactly what to expect regarding facilities etc. Sure would be wonderful to see everyone again!!

Edie

Mike Humfreville - 11-18-2003 at 06:40 PM

Go to campgecko.com - you can make reservations there. Mary Ann says you should probably reserve a camp site. They have showers and toilets for campers. Good luck.

Edie H. - 11-18-2003 at 06:46 PM

Will do right now!! Thanks you two....yeaha.....I'm going to Baja!!!!:tumble:

burritomama - 12-5-2003 at 08:36 PM

We'll be there too -- but at La Gringa -- After a day or two with Antonio and Bety at the Turtle Camp we'll pull our little trailer out to the point. We hope to hit town by Xmas eve.

I think this is our 6 or 7th year at BOLA, close to our 12th in Baja.

Maybe we'll drop in a visit you Marla (yes, this is your mild-mannered English prof pal).

Or maybe you want to bring the kiddies to see the turtles...

PS: thanks for letting me know here the new board was

Glad to hear

Mike Humfreville - 12-5-2003 at 08:41 PM

we've found some additional folks in the Bahia de Los Angeles group. Burritomama and Bajababe, we'll see you all there. We make frequent trips to La Gringa. What will you be driving?

magic rocks

marla - 12-6-2003 at 07:26 PM

How can i get some magic rocks for the amusement of my kids?

David K - 12-6-2003 at 09:22 PM

Marla, if the kids and I are there, we will get some. If not, Paulina knows where there's some, without going all the way to the copper mine. Otherwise, go to the copper mine and grab the GREEN ore. See the photo of the mine at http://davidksbaja.com/402 GeoRock explained the chemical process of the heat and the copper oxide gas which burns purple and other pretty colors.

Beware of Instant Friends - 12-6-2003 at 10:57 PM

Can I bring my Tequila and my Conservative values?

(Not always one in the same)

How long is the strip at the Bahia?

Yes!

David K - 12-6-2003 at 11:50 PM

You bet! Which strip? Next door to Camp Gecko is BLX-South Munoz' Strip at 3,000' + but sandy. But otherwise, there's the paved runways north of town... Just buzz Camp Gecko and one of us crazy gringos will play taxi and come get you, or land at Munoz' and walk over.

Beware of Instant Friends - 12-6-2003 at 11:59 PM

3000'

I have a 182 with a Horton STOL kit. Would you like to meet me at mid runway?

Hola BWOIF, saw your note on baja.net

capt. mike - 12-7-2003 at 07:59 AM

and you're right - just harmless fun....
Glad to meet another baja flyer. be sure and check out the AV section there too.

I'm planning on maybe one night at BOLA on the return from my annual baja XMAS - NY'S trip to mulege. Thats IF my bird is back in the air by then. Need a room though as Doc's full.

BLX - Munoz has very soft sand occaisionally and rutted in places if they haven't run a grader, plus I don't believe its 3000' useable, but with your eq, you should have no problem, just drag it good 1st to check. Jack Mack (el jefe, BBP) was the last i know who landed there in his shrike and you can get real info from him.

Also its private for the homes at the end but think they are cool.
I'll be at the paved one if i make it over, dec 30th or...? send me a PM and we can exchange e mail addys

My buddy and I are heading down early AM on Dec 27. I'm bringing my girlfriend, her first Baja trip and he is bringing his wife (return trip after a few years). I was able to get a message to Jose at Las Hamacas for reservations and he called me back to confirm our reservation. We'll be cruing the town and nearby dirtroads and trails on motorcycles. I think we'll hit Guillermo's or Casa Diaz for New Year's. See ya there!!

Mike Humfreville - 12-7-2003 at 09:05 PM

If we don't run into you in town, come 4 miles south on the San Francisquito road and have a beer or a soda with us at Camp Gecko. The road starts across from the (yellow) Xitlali market. It's wide and washboard but any vehicle can easily make the short trip. Have a good one and write a report when you get home so we can all relive another adventure in Baja California.

David K - 12-7-2003 at 10:24 PM

Keep in mind the New Year's party at Diaz' is a big outdoor fiesta for the whole town and nearby ranchos. The cultural experience is fantastic... A band comes from Ensenada (I think) to play. There is a pinata party for the kids first... then dancing for the grown ups.

Bob and Susan de Mulege..

capt. mike - 12-8-2003 at 05:53 AM

Thx for that. yes , i was very lucky...I'll be flying again soon, hopefully by Xmas thru Newyears week. Plane should be repaired and i need the annual 1st too. I'll be posting 2 pictures on baja.net taken right after the event.

4baja - 12-8-2003 at 06:52 AM

i checked out the runway last week on my quad and theres a few small ruts in it from the storm but otherwise in good shape. we saw a guy land in 25 knot winds and he did ok. see you all at camp gecko after we surf the pacific side for a few days.

Steve, you talking about Munoz, right?

capt. mike - 12-8-2003 at 09:32 AM

would someone out there be able to objectively walk/drive the runway and give a report on its "useable length"?

That would be the total length of any contiguous portion of it that's not interrupted by major holes, ruts, large rocks etc. nor excessively soft.

Thx - have a good holiday all you headed for BOLA. hope i can show up!

4baja - 12-9-2003 at 07:27 AM

yes mike i'm talking about munoz, it looked very landable even tho i am not a pilot.

sounds good....but latest is my plane

capt. mike - 12-9-2003 at 09:49 AM

will be in the shop for its annual inspection and some general repairs, will have to formulate plan "B"! maybe i'll ride the moto down.

burritomama - 12-9-2003 at 11:54 PM

We'll be out at La Gringa with a tiny "Kit" trailer (think teardrop)and kayaks. We drive a Sienna van that now sports both Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich bumperstickers. (Don't ask and I won't tell.)

I always hope one year to stay awake long enough to go out to Diaz's place but we turn in so early it's never happened. Now as sleep deprived middle-aged parents of a lively babe it's even unlikelier.

Sigh.

4baja - 12-10-2003 at 07:22 AM

we'll talk tear drop traillers when i get there as i used to own 3 of them(1943, 46, 52) and the've all been to baja.

Yes!

Anonymous - 12-10-2003 at 08:51 PM

I'll be there! With joe and Mike, may be a bit late, working on the house at Santa Maria.:D

marla - 12-11-2003 at 05:42 PM

Well David K. you and the kids better be there to show us where the magic rocks are! What is around there that I can talk you guys into showing my friend Laura? She's never been to Baja before but she is an avid camper and nature lover. I hope there will be other kids there for Michael and Sandy to play with.
Burritomama, I definitely want to show the kids the turtles so we will come looking for you. If you're not there we'll keep going up the road till we find you.

David K - 12-11-2003 at 08:42 PM

Marla, Bahia de L.A. is in the center of the most interesting part of Baja! (Well, central Baja... there are so many interesting places all over Baja)

My trip web pages have lot's of photos of natural and historic places in the area, these are the trip dates (in my web site) and what I recall were photos of, in the L.A. Bay area:

4-01: San Borja mission, Las Tinajitas petroglyphs, the museum, rock palm hill.

7-01: Tinaja de Yubay, lost mission hunt, Las Flores jail house and graves.

12-01: Montevideo Rock Art

4-02: Copper Mine, Las Flores Railroad and Tram line, Bahia San Rafael.

1-03: Punta Candelero (north of Bahia).

4-03: More at the railroad south of Las Flores.

7-03: San Borja and visitas at Santa Ana and San Ignacito.

If you go to my 'Contributed Photos' section click on the Bedman photos, specially the second group.

Sorry Marla......

Debra - 12-12-2003 at 12:25 AM

Magic Rock site is secret, If David shows you, both you and he will have to go missing in the desert. :P :o Have him take you and the kids up to the mine.

Anonymous - 12-12-2003 at 10:30 AM

Well Debra then you better get your ass down to Bahia for New Years and score us some.

Anonymous - 12-12-2003 at 10:33 AM

I saw some pickups with trailers headed south on the freeway this morning as I was driving to work, sigh. Wondered how many of them were going to Baja and how unfair it is that I can't go RIGHT NOW.:(

Anon. I only wish I could!

Debra - 12-12-2003 at 11:51 AM

Concider hiring one of Docs. girls (or Juanas granddaughters) to baby sit for you, the Diaz New Year party is really a great time and shouldn't be missed if at all possible.
