On 27 May 06 we were returning to USA from southern Baja and had reached the east end of the highway that parallels the Tijuana border fence, just
before the left turn under the underpass toward USA customs/immigration. Traffic was stop-and-go. We were driving a pickup with a camper shell.
As traffic moved forward and I accelerated, an old man, with metal crutches, who had been sitting beside the road, got up and banged himself and his
crutches against the side of the pickup and sat back down again.
A "policeman" in uniform who "just happened to be there" came running up to me telling me to get out of the pickup, which I did. He said that I had
run into the man. He demanded my license and registration, which I showed to him. He then began to gesture with a cell phone that he was going to
call his supervisor who would arrest me. I denied hitting the man, used the word "mordida", and with my camera in my hand told him to phone his
chief.
After several minutes, he decided that the old man was not hurt after all and waved us on our way.
The most disturbing part of this episode was that at least 3 Gringo drivers behind me, who witnessed the incident, drove around us without stopping to
help confront the "policeman". |
