House on the beach

bajajudy - 6-26-2006 at 06:35 AM

Gotcha!

Ok Where is this house. You will notice the open air feeling you get with no roof.

Don't know where it is, but the house looks like it's not very level....
Great photos

Paula - 6-26-2006 at 08:40 AM

The pictures reminded me of San Luis Gonzaga, so I think it might be along the coast facing Isla San Jose, give or take some northness or southness?:dudette:

elizabeth - 6-26-2006 at 08:49 AM

I think I saw this in a real estate ad that said something like...

Act now, this won't be on the market long. Baja fixer upper on the beach, a steal at $250,000.

shari - 6-26-2006 at 11:19 AM

I think I know...El Barril?? I was always facinated by this building. Do I win a prize??

bajajudy - 6-26-2006 at 02:16 PM

Paula, can you be more specific

Sorry Shari, no prizes for the wrong answer. Actually there are no prizes, just bragging rights....whoopeeeeeeee

:dudette::dudette::dudette::dudette::dudette:

Paula - 6-26-2006 at 02:25 PM

Judy, I can't be more specific. I was really just conversing. Never been to that stretch of the coast. Just to be silly I'll say Nopolo because it is such a grand house.

Shari, be careful what you wish for on this board. I won a trip to North Dakota in Feruary awhile back. Asked the same question-- do I get a prize?. Couldn't make the trip though. ;)

bajamigo - 6-26-2006 at 02:26 PM

Where is that?

cabokid - 6-26-2006 at 09:58 PM

Its on the road to a place of the green water . Its a bad and nasty place so you realy don't want to go there. I'll be there in Oct to check it out.

bajajudy - 6-27-2006 at 06:53 AM

CK
It is south of green water and Puerto Gatos on the peninsula a little above Isla San Jose. How they got the building materials to this place, I have no idea. The house must have been magnificent at one time. The locals gave varying accounts of who owned it and how it got there. Anyone with any information on the house, please chime in. Roberto?
This was one of the anchorages where we saw no other boats while we were there....que rico. I would not want to anchor there when the northerlies are blowing.

Eli - 6-27-2006 at 07:09 AM

Sure is a beautiful place Judy, thanks for the pictures, they put me in dream mode, visions of rebuilding it or living there back when................sigh. it's a beauty

tim40 - 6-27-2006 at 01:51 PM

BajaJudy: tell me more about the location please. Just when you think you have seen most areas, you (I) am educated how much I have yet to see.

bajajudy - 6-28-2006 at 07:05 AM

Tim
There is a road into the area and my sailing charts show an airstrip. Will get a road map out later and see where that road goes...maybe mission dolores...

It is north of San Evaristo so maybe there is a road from there.

Will get back to you.

marek - 6-28-2006 at 08:40 PM

The area known at Timbabiche is located between Evaristo and Agua Verde. There is a road that goes in there but apparently, 4wd is required. I've never been there, but it's been on my "to do" list for a while. There are a few stories on the internet of people driving into it. My understanding is that the road is also quite narrow and overgrown with brush, making a jeep a more ideal vehicle for driving in.

Roberto - 6-28-2006 at 08:49 PM

Folks,

I don't understand this - you have an interest in an area, can't you just get a map out and figure it out? Do you need someone to post exact coordinates of the place, and all places in between so that you are certain you have all you need?

If the answer is yes, I might (would) argue that Baja is not the place for you - a National Park, north of the border with clear Mapquest turn-by-turn directions is more like it.

I can hear the howls now . If you break down on the way, will you be grateful for the Mexican who stops to help you? If you cross another lost soul, will YOU stop to help?

tim40 - 6-28-2006 at 09:40 PM

Thank you Judy.

Roberto...have another beer.

Roberto - 6-28-2006 at 09:49 PM

I don't need beer to see that you clearly got the point of my post.:lol::lol:

tim40 - 6-29-2006 at 12:39 PM

You don't have a clue who or what you are talking about....was that your point?

Pescador - 7-1-2006 at 09:22 AM

Judy, that is a good picture, I have not seen that place for years. There used to be a cardon cactus showing on the roof. Some years ago we used to fly into Tembabiche and up until this time, only Skeet knew of the place as far as conversations on the board went. A friend and I flew into there in the early 80's and things pretty much look the same. There was a school house put in by the Mexican Government but they did not do a very good job. They had ropes over the top of the building and when the wind blew in the summer from the south, they would winch the building straight up and down, and when the wind switched to the north in the winter, they would ease up on the south side and winch down on the north side. I got to talk to the kids who all lived on ranchitos in the area in school. It was basically a one room school and we had kids from first grade through high school. The jefe at the airstrip was well known and we laughed with him that it must be a real test of faith to wait for customers to drop out of the air (literally). He would borrow a relatives panga and take us out for fishing and we would dive for lobsters right in the bay. He had a small plywood shack on the beach and most pilots would camp right there on thee beach. We took some paint and made a rough sign calling it the Tembabiche Hilton. His front gate to his house was a Cessna airplane door which occured when a pilot crashed his plane in the bay on takeoff.
Last year, friends of mine who own the RV Park, Palapa 206, told me that it has become a notorious place for drug landings and that some of the people who live in Constitucion go there on a regular basis to pick up and transport drugs. What a sad twist to a really beautiful place.
By the way, the two story building was the site of a big rancho and reportedly had a grand piano and a large room for dancing and people would come from all around when there were big fiestas there.

bajajudy - 7-1-2006 at 10:15 AM

Pescador
Did you ever hear how all the materials for the house arrived there? Or when it was built?
It must have been spectacular when it was furnished. Grand piano, eh...interesting.
What family owned it?

fdt-someone else called it green water so I used that to let him know that we were talking about the same place....Agua Verde

Pescador - 7-1-2006 at 12:45 PM

No, I am sure that Skeet has some more information about the family that originally owned the big Ranch but I did not really get much information about that. At one point the road was actually in pretty good shape in the early 70's but a chubasco took out the road. Some time later they repaired it because there was a small travel trailer just off the end of the runway that had been hauled in over the dirt road. Then the road was destroyed again in several places and I have talked to some guys on motorcycle that were unable to get all the way in to Tembabiche. Evidently the drug money had some effect since they did manage to get the road opened and it is accessible at this point.
From what I remember there are several different families living in the immediate area and they all go to Loreto to buy supplies and necessities. I gave the head honcho several plastic gas cans and they were very happy to have those. Saturday nights everyone came to his house and they started up an old generator and everyone sit around the porch and anywhere they could sit to watch TV, a real community happening.
I think there is some mention of the background of this place in Gene Kira's book about the history of that area. I am in Alaska for the summer but will look when we get back.

KurtG - 7-1-2006 at 12:54 PM

My 1966 edition of Ray Cannon's "Sea of Cortez" has a section on that area and a bit about the "Hidden Hacienda." It states that at that time it had been unoccupied for some 70 years.

gnukid - 7-2-2006 at 02:36 AM

I visited the house and the family this year and got this story from the relatives of the family who built the house there, which is written and posted in the neighboring home next to a photo of the family.

In the 1900's the patriarch and matriarch who lived there who had 10 daughters. The father searched for oysters and sold the perls which were considered the best. One day he found a very very large perl about 40 carats(? I think) and he jumped on a passing shipping boat and went to la paz and sold it for about $5000 which was a great deal of money then.

He returned and began to build his home which became a center for oyster divers who each hoped to find another large perl. The patriarch vowed to find a larger perl and one day found a larger perl nearly 50 carats (? not sure) which he sold in la paz as well, these two perls are among the two largest to have been found in north america. Many of the daughters married americans. As to the location; south of loreto about 30 miles.

Thanks to Carlos Means for introducing the family.

bajajudy - 7-2-2006 at 06:40 AM

Welcome gnu!

And thank you for filing in the gaps. What a wonderful story. Did anyone indicate how the building materials got to this far end of the world? By boat from La Paz?

Anybody Been Here Lately???

motoged - 11-13-2008 at 11:56 AM

Nomads,
Timbabiche is a rarely seen jewel of Baja. The best info I have come across was written by the late Sr. Divertido (Roy Baldwin) in one of his quad adventure reports...
http://www.rancholeonero.com/memorial4roy.html

My sister first told me of it in the late 80's as she was a kayak guide (Ocean Womyn) based out of Seattle/Loreto, and had paddled from Loreto to La Paz one time....

It's on my To Do List....

Ged

toneart - 11-13-2008 at 12:41 PM

Well, I got here too late to see the photos. I am assuming that Judy took them down after a cranky old Nomad has reappeared here to take the thread south.

What was the point of that cranky post? The three page thread looked interesting and now it has been denigrated. It appeared to me like Nomads were doing what they do best; sharing their love of Baja and posting items of interest. If the point to bring it down was to lament the sharing of a remote location, I think there is no threat to it by posting here. Reasons:
It is not accessible without duress to most vehicles.
Most Nomads reading the post would never go there. Several are armchair Nomads who don't or won't even cross the border anymore.

Those who may venture there would not be destroyers. They would go to see it because of its remoteness and its beauty. I said in an earlier thread on Agua Verde that I would go there in my boat next spring. I also asked if anyone knows the legend of The Glowing Man.
Nobody answered. Nobody knows. So I doubt if the pristine area will be trampled by tourists. Any nomad who would venture there would certainly be stewards of the land and sea, and we would all benefit vicariously. Where's the harm?:(

bajajudy - 11-13-2008 at 12:54 PM

Nope, I had nothing to do with the disappearance of the photos.
If anyone is interested, I can see if I still have them but I had a computer melt down since I took those and dont know if they bit the dust.

TA,
I think there is some reference to the Glowing Man in Roy's report. If I am mistaken, I have read a few different missives regarding that mystery but did not record the links...have you tried to Google it?

See:

Osprey - 11-13-2008 at 03:24 PM

A few years ago a stranger showed up at my house in La Ribera with an old customer of mine from Las Vegas. Don't remember the strangers name but he claimed the he had bought all the ejido land at Tambibiche and wanted to develope it with my old client's money. My customer owned a small casino on Fremont street in Las Vegas and was a gem of a guy. They wanted me to accompany them to the place -- we were to drive to La Paz, hire a boat, run up to the area for a look see. The aledged owner said he had bought the whole beach for about $8,500 dollars, had every living soul sign off on it -- he had plans to turn it into a huge resort with my old client's money. I begged off, didn't trust the hustler. They hired the boat, made the trip in very bad weather, toured the site, my friend lost interest. End of story.

toneart - 11-13-2008 at 03:43 PM

Motoged,

Yes, I had read the Glowing Man story after an explorer/friend had heard the legend first-hand, then found this article and emailed it to me.

No, you are not "the cranky Nomad". You may be The Glowing Man though. :o:wow:

Besides myself, I was referring to someone else. While not always successful, I try to restrain myself from calling out people by name.:saint:

TA,
I really didn't think I was "That Guy" this time....other times, perhaps...;D

There is a large rock painting of a "Glowing Man" that is done with fluorescent paint around San Evaristo that I have seen pictures of on the net, but don't have the link...it is on a rock face and is relatively recent....

Yeah, it was posted here after I mentioned it in another string. It is really cool! I just did a search under "Agua Verde". Three recent strings came up but not the one with the florescent painting you just talked about.

Does any one else remember where that appeared and who posted it?
It was within this couple of weeks.
