Perscription medication

Axel - 7-6-2006 at 09:04 PM

I'm sure this has been discussed many times but I will ask again because I've heard so many different things. What is the law about traveling with perscibed medication. I am going on a 10 day surf trip and after day 2 I will not be able to stand without taking my perscibed vicodin and flexeral due to a bad back. I have been traveling in baja for many years with no problems but now I dont know if i was just lucky. The bottles have my name on them but do I need the actual perscription from my doctor. Also My daughter must travel with an epi pen due to a peanut allergy. Any advise? Thanks

I have traveled in Mexico for over 40years ---

the last 10-12 years I have always carried my medicine in original containers . I fly and drive and never once have I been questioned about my pill container .
I am a regular , not a newbie or few time traveler.

We always carry meds and vitamins in the original bottles.
Hydrocodone is the bomb for my back !
Never had a problem.

good idea to have a current written rx from your MD, if you plan to buy stuff here that's a different story....as I understand it your RX is only good if written by a Mexican MD but they are right there in the Farmacias (or next door) and charge you all of about $3 US for a "consult" for the Rx.

Traveled with perscription meds and an epi-pen (they don't have these in Mexico)... all with the patient's name on the containers, epi pen box... NO PROBLEMOS!

Only IF you need to purchase more or new drugs IN MEXICO should you get a doctor's Rx... a Mexican doctor at that!

it ain't $3 for a mex MD to write one - try $25 - $35, still a bargain tho.

for a PRE scription!

what's a perscription?

bajabound2005 - 7-7-2006 at 06:49 AM

the docs in the pharmacies do it for $2.50 according to all the signs they have up

Axel - 7-7-2006 at 07:02 AM

I wont be purchasing any medication. I just wanted to know the correct way to travel with them.

Also, we always travel with more than 1 epi-pen.
Unless you can get to a US hospital quickly, you may need another one for another day. We have used them succesfully in the midst of a long camping trip that we would never have been comfortable continuing without another epi-pen. One time can scare the #*@*# out of you !

ok Bajabounder - i am game, where can i go to get that deal?? i would REALLY stock up - lemme know puleeeeeeze.
i am hitting the wrong farmacias !!

turtleandtoad - 7-7-2006 at 12:58 PM

I travel with 17 prescription drugs and 2 self-injectors (for my diabetes). I've had the checkpoint people look them over, ask in shock if they all were for me (I travel alone), and point them out to their amigos.

But I've never been questioned about the legality of the drugs, or asked for a prescription.

Capt. George - 7-7-2006 at 04:03 PM

no sweat...in fact they can duplicate at the clinicas if you have original bottle (or at least copy of name of drug.)

Never had a problem..........I think all things will continue to ease up with continuation of Vincentes gov't

The correct/legal way to carry prescription medication in Baja...
each medication in its own prescription bottle with a legible label, your name on that label.
All you need. Honest.

Also, I find myself agreeing with David K :?:;)
epi-pens should be a part of one's basic first aid supplies.

As we travel with our personal meds as well as a dog (god in reverse) who is on Phenobartbital, Potassium Bormide, and Valium as needed and so far have never had any problems, I believe I will now carry copies of her scripts, thanks for posting this question.

capt. mike - 7-8-2006 at 07:03 AM

Do you have allergies? Why is this a necessary Baja medication? Will it help with scorpion stings? I treated mine with Tequila and it still hurt like all... :o :O :o :O :o

My son is allergic to bee stings... After questionong farmacias in Mexico and seeing something on the Internet, I discovered they are not available in Mexico.

One thing to remember, many medicins that require percreptions in the USA do not require them here. Anti-biotics and many other things are "over the counter" in Mexico.

In case one day the tequila doesn't work and your air passages begin to swell shut, the epi-pen will help. Keeps you from going into anaphylactic shock, saves your life.
