?'s about a family vacation to San Felipe

mickeyb - 7-7-2006 at 07:01 PM

1st time post. found site through Gene Kira. looks like tons of good info...

We are planning a trip to San Felipe (1st time visiting there) for family vacation. Been to Ensenada and Rosarito Beach alot. have some info on Hotel Cortez - any feedback on this location or other recommendations? Is it a good beach at hotel cortez? Fishing? Is it in town or outside town?

We are fisherman and I'm wondering what we can do there - not the mother ship thing. Any info on panga operators and fishing potential would be good. Can we surf fish?

Dining and eating suggestions???

Generally any info on what people enjoy doing or have found to be best about SF wil help us to have a good time.

Tips on drive down? anything to watch out for?

El Cortez is right on the S edge of town - a couple blocks from the Malecon and the few blocks of tourist shops etc. Lots of good resturantes in the area. Depends on what kind of food you're looking for. Everyone has great fish and shrimp dishes. Nice beach in that area and at this time of year the town has some visitors but is not crowded. Warmer here than Ensenada but not too uncomfortable most of the time. Don't fish so no help there but there are pangas taking fishermen out every day. Come on down and enjoy your vacation!

Not as hot as Phoenix or Yuma

Humidity not too high yet - Expect it to climb in Aug

We were visting friends in South Campo yesterday. They say the humidity has been higher there than in San Felipe or north of SF where we are so It's not bad at all here!

The fishing i fair to ok but if you go to consag rock itts good to ex take so me frozen squid with you also you can fish the incoming tide near the rocks by the light house both sides of the hill , have a good time, also just walk down the malecon and you can find a panga and you are better off bringing your own fishing equipp jim:bounce::bounce:

Have a great time...

Here is an example of beach camping 20+ miles south of San Felipe...

Ramon is a great fisherman/panguero that we have used for years (20+)... You can find him around Ruben's Restaurant/ Bar/RV Park which is 1/2 mile No. of town. Best to bring your own gear, as mentioned above, but he will come up with everything if you need it including bait, (we always take squid). A full day to Consag, for 2-3 people is about $150, not including tip. He will definitely put you on fish. If you're not up for the one hour trip (ea. way) to the island he knows all the other hot spots, such as the "ship wreck" and shore lines that are producing and will adjust the bill accordingly. He helps the novices with the bait and cleans the fish afterwards. Tell him Virgil, Miguel and Wayno sent you and he will tell you some stories!

I am kind of curious about the bandidos, never saw one and i have been going to san felipe and baja norte since the 50's the only thing stolen from me has been beer (i think) maybe i drank it and forgot, i have been hearing the never pull over story for years i suppose it has happened a time or two , but i want to see something official before i buy into that b/s , so mickey take your family and have a great trip ,just use your head just like in calif jim;D;D

I'm sure he meant it as a joke...... There are NO BANDITOS anywhere around or on the way to or out of San Felipe. But there are a few locals that can "Chinga Lay" you if you don't watch it!

eetdrt88 - 7-9-2006 at 05:59 PM

Bandito's:lol::lol::lol:

thanks!!!

mickeyb - 7-10-2006 at 07:00 PM

Thanks to everyone for all the info. Much appreciated. We're going to head down and stay at the Hotal Cortez, got some good responses from Victor there and its sounds good.

bbbait - great info on fishing. we will definitely look up Ramon and tell him you sent us. What can we expect to fish for at Consag Rock in August????

bajabum - 7-14-2006 at 10:34 AM

fishing in the upper Cortez basically sucks! Even at Isla Consag. You will be limited to Corbina, triggers, cabrilla, bottom fish and if your lucky maybe a WSB at the rock. SF is a nice place to stop for a fish taco and it has a great beach but it is not very fishy. Good choice for a touristy family vacation but if you want fish head south!

i have never been skunked in s/f it is not marlin and dorado but for just a reasonablely priced trip with little ones ,i think it is great also out on the rocks by the light house or the marina where the big boats tie up the small cabrilla are lots of fon on a fly rod witt a small float and chunk of squid
