For those on the board interested in the Native Peoples of Baja:

NATIVA 2006: FESTIVAL OF TRADITIONAL ARTS OF BAJA CALIFORNIA JULY 29?30, 2006, 10:00 a.m. -- 6:00 p.m. Ventana al Mar, Ensenada, Baja California (at the base of the giant flag by the bay)

Join native artists from the Paipai, Kumiai, Cucap? and Kiliwa communities for a unique cultural gathering and market featuring the traditional arts of the state of Baja California. Share in vibrant traditions of indigenous music and dance with gourd singers and dancers from both sides of the border. Over 40 traditional artists from the indigenous communities of Baja California offer a rich array of traditional pottery, basektry (willow, juncus, pine and palm), beaded jewelry, bows and arrows, sage incense, leather articles, sculptures and many other unique handmade items. The market also features traditional and regional foods, demonstrations of traditional food preparation (including samples), interactive classes in which the public can sit with an artisan and learn to make a craft, indigenous information booths and an arts contest. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact directly with the artists and learn about the unique cultural traditions that have been passed on from countless generations of native peoples of the peninsula. And admission is free!

The event is organized by the Alliance for Sustainable Development (ADESU; visit our website at www.adesu.org), a project that unites indigenous communities, organizations of Mexico and the US, and individuals to work for cultural and natural heritage conservation through sustainable development in Baja California?s native lands. Current participants include Baja California Native Artisans, Terra Peninsular, dedicated to land conservation in Baja California http://www.terrapeninsular.org/, The Native Cultures Institute of Baja California (CUNA), Interamerican Foundation, Global Greengrants and volunteers from Mexico and the US in collaboration with the indigenous communities of Baja California. Thanks Taco.

Enjoyed the 2 website links. I couldn't get the English version of Terrapeninsular to come up, but will check back later.

Went last year. It's truly worth the trip, especially if you have kids who are interested in the art and culture of the indigenas.
