How many Cops on the board?

Baja Bernie - 10-5-2006 at 04:44 PM

We did this a couple of years ago and now one of the newby's has made a comment that caused me to ask the question again.

Guess most know I retired after over 25 years on SDPD as a Captain.--Yeah! way back in 1983--so I have really beat the system.

QuePasaBaja - 10-5-2006 at 05:05 PM

Congrats on lasting as long as you have.

I left in 99. I was in almost 10 years. Just got tired of the crap, and had a home compter business making almost 2 times what I was getting there.

But Im East Coast Yo!

Natalie Ann - 10-5-2006 at 05:14 PM

Not same as if it was me, but..
my son is California Highway Patrol - investigator.
I'm real proud of him.

Bajabus - 10-5-2006 at 05:20 PM

I am not one but I play one on the off topic board ...LOL

Al G - 10-5-2006 at 05:28 PM

Bernnie..I am not a cop, unless you count the Military. If I was one I would haul in the druggies on the other post.

Was a Federal Agent in the DOJ for the DEA for a few years in the late 70's and early 80's, in MIAMI. It just got too dangerous and after my daughter was born I went on to other endeavors. But what a great experience it was... memories I will never, ever, forget!

Nope... Buuut, I useta be an Associate member of FOP, primarily to support the guardians of our community and secondarily for the $1 pitchers at the Lodge at shift break.:saint:

Sorry!

Are you saying you were a Fop of a bear? You might wish to explain so the youngun's don't think that you might be a swishin' bear:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Cardon Man - 10-5-2006 at 07:12 PM

Not a cop but i've taken a good beating at the hands of a cop when I was 19. Illegal stop, illegal search, illegal beating. Guilty of being white with long hair I guess. Got a lawyer and the whole bit. Good experience for me...not so good for him. Taught me that not all cops are good and the bad ones are down right dangerous.

"bad ones are down right dangerous." So true and the good cops hate them more that the citizens.

Yes! Corky you did by 5 months--The best job I ever had was being a motor Sergeant.

Great pic, Officer Corky!

Peace officer N. California and Fed level. 5 years was enough stress for me. I was still trying to save the world from the scum. Also mundane and boring stuff: surveilance, stakeouts, no life outside the other officers, tired of always being on the job.

Can't name departments. Bad guys still want to talk to me.

The bad cops were as bad as the scum. It was not safe. If you can't trust someone with a badge and gun, who can you trust?

Still, cops are my brothers and sisters and I'd back any of them up in a nano-second.

Happier being a paramedic, thank you.

Baja Bernie - 10-5-2006 at 07:37 PM

I am no longer surprised that many-many good cops leave and for the reasons you spoke of not the pay.

Rather doubt that I could make it today even if some one could take about 48 years off my back. Come to think of it--I really don't think I would want to do that stuff again. Heck! I would not even want to be that young again. But I am most happy with my memory's.

mtgoat666 - 10-5-2006 at 07:39 PM

I like to play cop.
For instance, the cop in me says this topic aint baja related, and all you cops should move the conversation over to the off-topic forum.

bajarich - 10-5-2006 at 07:39 PM

I'm not a cop, but my wife & I work in the Salt Lake Mobile Neighborhood Watch Program. We really appreciate what the Police do for our community, and we like to help them out a little by lending them our eyes and ears a few nights a month.

You're right....

Not exactly Baja related except we're all Bajanians and cops.

OK. How's this? Mexican cops are my brothers too. Sisters too, if there are any out there. I'd back them too.

Gutsy response to a bunch of cops, mtgoat.

Oh, and Bernie?

I sure can't understand this post.

OK, so some of you are/were city, county or state police.
No doubt this can be an honorable job.

Seems like many others are wanna-be cops.
That's what I can't understand.
Must be a mnd-set I don't have.
Maybe someone can explain to me why ?

library cops ? school crossing guards ? maybe an Andy Frain ?
I know I should have deleted this one, oh well ! Here goes.

Bomberro - 10-6-2006 at 06:37 AM

Worked hand in hand with LA Cops for 31 years, they saved my butt many a time in South Central LA. Never met a bad one and when you need one real bad in a hurry, it great to have them show up red lights and guns...hats off to them all, Mr. J.Q. Public will never know what life would be like with out them. Thanks to their public service and at times personal sacrifice, one of my brother firemen's, Cop wife, was gunned down not far from my station on Central Ave.

TMW - 10-6-2006 at 07:16 AM

Corky great pix. When I was in the navy I took a correspondence course for Private Investigator. All my buddies called me Sam for Sam Spade. It strayed with me till I got out. Never work in that line after I got out.

Okay!

Baja Bernie - 10-6-2006 at 07:39 AM

When I was a motor sergeant we used to meet our counterparts, the Tijuana motorcops in either TJ or San Ysidro and have motorcycle ride offs--different contests. Those guys were some fantastic riders because of the 'roads' they had to deal with.

Used to meet for lunch at the Cafe Especial in TJ always got the entire down stair room to ourselves.
We really worked closely together in those days and if we had a guy they wanted he would get tossed, south, across the border. If we wanted somebody the opposite would occur from the Baja side.

None of this stuff was done with the brass being aware of it.

No lawyers, no paperwork and the 'system' still worked because the bad guys from Baja still got their day in court in San Diego.

See how easy it is, when someone thinks they know what the law is, to comply with the rules. Totally BAJA related.:lol::lol::lol:

We always appreciated it when a civilian tried to direct traffic and help us with our mission. Traffic direction can be much more difficult than it looks. Particularily if you are south of the border in good old Baja!!!!:lol::lol::lol::lol:

We are not wanna-be-cops. The last job I would want is to be a cop, even if the pay and the hours were good. We do Mobile Neighborhood Watch because we found that Neighborhood Watches in other parts of Salt Lake were driving the crime out of their areas and into our area. It's a pain in the ass really. I don't like staying up late at night, or using my car and gas to do a job that should be done by the police, but they're arent enough police officers because the people don't want to pay the taxes necessary to fund them.

The crime in our area has gone down. It's a small price to pay.

Oso - 10-6-2006 at 08:42 AM

Definitely would NOT wanna be a cop, just not psychologically suited for it. Just appreciated having them around in the bad-ass neighborhoods I worked in at the time. Took the PACE exam once, trying to get into Farmers Home Admin., scored mid 80's- not good enough. Had two offers; Customs in Nogales or IRS in Vegas. Declined both. Knowing myself, I figured I'd be in big trouble sooner or later with either one.:saint:

i suport the cop in every way i pay my tickets, pay my taxes i believe its a honerable job
but then every other job done is honerable too truck drivers put there lives on the line too
so do doctors lawers and indian chiefs ppl working for the electric company, farmers, loggers to name a few a job well done is a job well done
i think it should be celebrated i think its called labor day
P.S. and im non of the above

except the spelling cops i still think they suck lol

SoCalAl - 10-6-2006 at 08:54 AM

Wow,
Intrtesting stuff. How is this Baja related? You are on this forum. Hey my hat goes off to all those who have and still serve. I have had my fair share of run in with officers and some are great while other are jerks but hey overall the presence of the badge and law enforment in general allows us to live without constantly taking each other out. Wish there were tougher punishments for those breaking the law and maybe it would'nt be as difficult to walk the streets of cities like Los Angeles.
Cops fish to, YEAHHH..
What a site it would be to see a Motorcycle cop with a couple of fishing poles hanging out the back of the bike....

Question to the enforcers? Why is it that every time an angler gets approached by a Fish and Game officer, they always act like you have something illegal. They never ask have you caught anything, they simply flash the badge and just ask where is your fish! Is that how they are trained? It takes a few seconds to let the shock of the badge sink in and by the time you totally understand what is going on they are already crawling alover your stuff, searching for fish. Why is that? I mena where are we going to go, in the water? Just curious....

Cincodemayo - 10-6-2006 at 09:34 AM

My wife says that I'd never be able to be a cop...I'd end up on Administrative leave shooting too many stupid people. I was a Firefighter for 13 years which 6 of those were Captain. I'd always go on Ride-A-Longs with one of the departments officers...he is one of the good cops. There are many power hungry idiots on the force but that goes for all jobs.

bajaguy - 10-6-2006 at 09:36 AM

10 years in California (city police officer and a county sheriff's deputy) and 24 years in Nevada where I retired as a Lieutenant with the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Investigation Division. 6 years in the Air Force as a Security Policeman.

To even things out, wife's father was on LA City Fire Dept. (27's, Hollywood). Died in the line of duty, 1958

Good Thread!!
I sometimes wonder "What appeals to the Policeman/Firefighter that goes to Baja? Why so Many?

Many years ago while living at Tio Don's Casa near the Hotel Oasis in Loreto, there came by a Long Beach Firefighter-He had just Dove on the Wreck near Cabo Pulmo and Speared a Fish that outweighed Him; Hellva Man!

Sometime in the early years, the first House built by Americanos in Coyote. was constructed on the Narrow Ledge above the Bay by two Long Beach/or La Firefighters-I was told that they had the time to come to Baja Sur and Adventure because of their two week on two week off Work.

Bad Policeman/Good Policeman??

On a bright Sunny day coming across the New Mexico State Line into Texas, driving my little Red Toyota Pickup with California Plates, an Officer of the Law came up behind and gave me the Light{He did not come for enough to see my Seatbelt}.
He approached and made the Remark"You did not have your Seat Belt on"
I stated; that yes it was on, and that He did not come up far enough to See it"
He ask me Three Questions:
Are you carring more than $10,000 Dollars Cash?
Do you have any Drugs in the Car?
May I Search your Vehicle?
I responded:
None of your Business how much money I have!
I dont' do DRUGS!
No! you cannot Search my Vehicle!

He spoke into his Radio and shortly, there appeared a nice looking Lady Officer with a very Large Dog, who proceeded to go Around my little ole Toyota.
On Finishing Her Task, the Officer gave me a Warning Ticket for no Seat Belt.

Just Doing His Job: Last year the Panhandle Officers still doing the samething found $46,000,000 in various Drugs.

Moral of this Story; Officer was somewhat out of Bounds stopping me on the Pretext of the Seatbelt, just because a 65 year old Man was driving a Little Red Toyota with Calif Plates.

I am glad he stoped me as well as the others he caught with DRUGS !!

seriously

My favorite Cop was the one who worked for the Indio PD that we used to Buy/Sell/Trade guns with. No idea where he came up with so many weapons at such a good price and we never asked. I'm sure that it was all legit.

I believe it is Doug's role to decide what goes in which forum.
Since the question was posed by a Nomad to other Nomads, it would seem that the responses are from Baja travelers (Nomads) and therefore pertinent to Baja. Particularly since it was cops and fireman who made many inroads to Baja in the old days. I'd venture to guess that their being of the more adventurous types and also looking for a respite from their jobs were the reasons they pushed into Baja.

That is about the most pig-headed thing I may have ever heard on this board.

I mean - WOW.

Surfers, Sailors, and Fishermen (who may or who may not have been cops) have been traveling to the tip of baja since at least the 50's, 20 years before there was a road, so unless those cops were no longer cops or had lots and lots of vacation time, my gut says the early explorers of baja were people without jobs - hobos, nomads - you get my point yet?

If the admin thinks this is a worthy topic, then so be it.

Ummm...

bigzaggin - 10-6-2006 at 11:31 AM

...you guys are welcome to form a mutual admiration society as needed (and we ALL know cops have become exponentially more admirable post-9/11), but to suppose this is the proper forum simply 'cause "the question was posed by a Nomad to other Nomads" is a little silly. I mean, I could certainly open a thread asking, "How do people feel about Darfur and shoelaces?" and I would technically be one Nomad asking others...but the relavance to Baja?

However, I was surprised to learn cops are "more adventerous." Most of the cops I know (an uncle and cousin among them) prefer a quaint afternoon of beard-trimming or a trip to the ammo shop over a nite of cold Tecates and fresh corvina on a remote bluff in Baja. But who am I to heckle...I like a CHiPs rerun as much as the next guy.

And I know it's Doug's role to decide what goes where, but let me at least TRY to right this listing ship...BAJA: Where is the best place to camp? My vote? The beach in front of the cannery just south of San Miguel in a strong offshore breeze. Thoughts?

Bajamatic - 10-6-2006 at 12:15 PM

at least now we're talking about baja (minus a few comments about Africa and shoes).

Hate to do this

Baja Bernie - 10-6-2006 at 01:10 PM

BUT I agree with Bajamatic that a lot of those folks who bummed around Baja were pre-stoners and surfers in their VWbuses. They had all the time they needed to just hang. 1950's

As things started into a building and staying stage, 1960's it was a lot of different types of folks who came down.

If you read any of my books you would know that I came mainly to enjoy the 'real' Mexican culture, to kick back, and get away from the rat race.

Look around and you will see that the stoners are still hanging in Baja.

Fireman & Cop Rescued by SD Firemen!

cat127 - 10-6-2006 at 02:12 PM

More than 25 years ago my little brother (then a probie with the LAFD, now a new captain in Watts) and my cuz (then street patrol, now a detective in the LAPD major crimes unit) took me and SIX of my girl pals to San Felipe (ages 21-25).... there was one calamity after another with us girls but the last straw was when one of my friends put the ice pick through the side of the blender breaking up block ice for our margaritas.... the SDFD guys camping next door took pity on my brother and cuz.... and bought them beers! And shook their heads and said I dont care how cute those 7 girls are - what were you thinking????? (this was there were no "resorts" or condos in SF.)

Does that help in the thread/Baja Connection?

Cincodemayo - 10-6-2006 at 03:31 PM

Cat...Watts would certainly be a rough duty. I was with Laguna Beach when the Rodney King verdict spawned the riots in South LA and the rioters and dirtbags were shooting at the fireman...Every firetruck had to be escorted by LAPD units and my wife blatently said you AREN"T going...
I replied by saying You bet I'm not.

Skeet/Loreto - 10-6-2006 at 06:14 PM

Bajamatic: I think maybe you should go back and check. You will find that "Baja" was not dicovered and Populated by Surfers/Hobos!

Let me Suggest that Fisherman would be a true Anser in Part.

Did you in your small World ever here of a Pilot named Ed Tabor?
Do you have Idea of of a Converted B-25 with 6 Seats in the Bomb Bay carring fisherman to Fish the Sea Of Cortez?
Do you have any Idea of the number of Fishing Trips made by DC-3 Aircraft made to various ?Spots in Baja??

Do you have any Idea at the type of Trips, number of Cars, that made the 5 Day trip from TJ to La Paz before the Road Opened????

I think Not !
Please read some Books,as suggested by Bernie? You will be surpised at the things you may Learn.
