4am heading south?

gnukid - 10-11-2006 at 10:23 PM

If you were driving from SF california to La Paz this monday or tuesday morning what route would you take to increase your comfort level. Otay Mesa o San Ysidro? And what time? I don't need to stop at immigration.

I normally cross from San Ysidro at about 4am heading south I usually am heading well south by sunrise and drive a full day. I am driving by myself... with a small boat trailer. I am feeling that this might not best itinerary y route now? Is later in the morning with more light better? Otay Mesa? I read the threads I am not clear about the directions. I have driven there once before.

Southbound Otay Mesa is not the best. Too much cross town traffic. Early morning TJ is the least hassle.

Sunrise next Tuesday is 6:54 AM. If anything you could wait until 6:00 AM (civil twilight is at 6:29) and cross and head straight for the scenic road.

Have a safe trip.

Sounds good. I will have a quiet familiar trip at 6:am. Is the scenic route different from cuota? I would appreciate any ideas to avoid the turf war. I only drive once a year. I just flew to sf to drive back with a load for the house.

The Cuota is the "scenic route" (on signs).

There haven't been more reports of significant problems on the Cuota since August. If you still want to avoid the Cuota, then your other option is Tecate-Ensenada.

I haven't driven the new road from Otay-Popotla (or thereabouts) - but you're still only as far as Popotla.

Definately the San Ysidro/Tijuana crossing is best at that hour. You will even clear Ensenada before it wakes up and traffic gets busy. First Army stop will be three miles before Santo Tomas at the top of the grade, inspection wise, no problem going south.

Have a safe and fun trip!

We like to cross at San Ysidro around 6AM---no traffic. We usually don't stop until we get to San Vicente. Then we eat breakfast at the little place infront of a motel just south of the Pemex Station. I have never noticed if it has a name or not, but we like the place.

There are usually of couple of tables out front, but it had been raining.

Have a great trip
