Passport or not by Jan 7 -2007??

John M - 12-4-2006 at 05:44 AM

Will they be required for re-entry from Baja?

From the recent tv news it appears to be the case.

Anyone seen anything differently within the past couple of weeks?

They are required for air transport 1/07.
Foot traffic will not need them until 1/08.

It is a good idea to have one anyway. If you ever have a problem down here it is the only ID that a lot of people respect. some Banks wont change money without one and there are other things it is handy for.

bruce is correct...but

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

As early as January 1, 2008, ALL persons, including U.S. citizens, traveling between the U.S. and…Mexico…by land or sea…MAY be required to present a valid passport or other documents as determined by the Department of Homeland Security.

While recent legislative changes permit a later deadline, the Departments of State and Homeland Security are working to meet all requirements as soon as possible.

Ample advance notice will be provided to enable the public to obtain passports or passport cards for land/sea entries.

When the time comes that passports are required there will be a big rush for them so it would be best to get one now.

They are already becoming handy in Algodones. When the pedestrian line is long they broadcast on the loudspeaker, everyone with a passport come to the front, where there is a special lane for them. This can expedite the crossing up to an hour.

The SENTRI border guard on the Sunday after Thanksgiving asked for our passports "if you have them" (my wife and I did) and said they will be required "in a few months" for our kids as well (they don't have any yet). From all official indications, that is incorrect, but it is rather a simple matter to get passports for them and we're going to do it ASAP. You just never know what a particular officer/agent/official will demand, on either side of the border (our FM3s required valid U.S. passports anyway), so it's best to have a belt and suspenders approach to it.
