Google earth whale image

ursidae69 - 12-15-2006 at 01:41 PM

I searched and didn't see that this was posted before. I am using Google Earth to plan my next Baja trip in March 2007 and while scanning around San Ignacio Lagoon I see this huge whale outline on the land. That was pretty cool. Google earth is awesome. How did they make this whale outline? Anyone know?

The approximate coordinates on Google Earth are 26 49' 59.06" and 113 08' 21.04"

That is indeed interesting! Thank's for posting it!

Cypress - 12-15-2006 at 02:14 PM

You've got to be kidding?:?:

ursidae69 - 12-15-2006 at 02:17 PM

Nope, I just logged out of and back into Google Earth and it is still there. Hopefully another Google Earth user will confirm, I'm REALLY curious how it got there. The image quality isn't good enough to tell when I zoom way in, looks like maybe someone used a dozer to clear the land in that shape. If it is real, I'll bet it can be seen from space! :wow:

Don Alley - 12-15-2006 at 02:31 PM

I got it on Google Earth as well.

I'm a skeptic, though. I think it was done with software...I don't think it really exists. Just a guess, but I think it's a computer hack.

Or maybe it was done by some lost alien civilization in a time before current history. Travel there with The Key and enter The Lost Dimension of the Whales.

Or maybe it's something that a copyright holder put there.

fishbuck - 12-15-2006 at 02:35 PM

I did it last time I was there with my Corona empties. Just took a few hours.;D

ursidae69 - 12-15-2006 at 02:38 PM

I'm a skeptic too Don! The tile says it was aquired on 10-30-2003 and is owned by DigitalGlobe. Weird. Maybe I will make a GeoCache out of it and check it out when I go.

Taco de Baja - 12-15-2006 at 02:43 PM

Go to Google Earth and enter these coordinates:
50° 0'38.20"N 110° 6'48.32"W

There is a huge Indian head in the mountains of Alberta Canada :o

Much better than the "head" that appeared on Mars in the early 1970s...May be a hack though ;)

Cypress - 12-15-2006 at 02:55 PM

Taco de Baja, That's a good picture.:)

BajaGeoff - 12-15-2006 at 03:15 PM

Those have to be hacks........unless there are some people out there with waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much time on their hands!

elgatoloco - 12-15-2006 at 04:26 PM

The whale is a piece of art done by the same guy that did the hand and the whale on the hillside south of Playa Requeson.

The book 'Eye of The Whale' has mention of the 'artist' and his plans to construct it out of painted rocks.

spike - 12-15-2006 at 04:43 PM

The "indian head" google earth image is a real image, not a hack. This spot is only 40 miles from the town that I live in. If you check out this link you can see the image compared to the same location in a air photo taken in 1951. It created quite a media stir when it was discovered.

Taco and Spike,

Has the ipod headphone always been there? Hip indio

Iflyfish

spike - 12-15-2006 at 06:22 PM

Hey Iflyfish,
The Ipod is actually a gas well and the service road leading to it. Kind of freaky how it is positioned just right. This area is very famous for the amount of natural gas that we have.

Bruce R Leech - 12-15-2006 at 07:05 PM

Wow I just don't know I have been over that with a fine toothed come and I see some things that make me think it has been doctored but then I see some things that make me think it could be really there

Bruce R Leech - 12-15-2006 at 07:07 PM

some one is going to need to go to 26 49' 59.06" and 113 08' 21.04" and check it out. any volunteers?

capt. mike - 12-16-2006 at 06:52 AM

there's a similar one at campo Kuyima, whale and bambino made out of rocks, very large we fly right over it in the pattern for the pista. in fact it helps us find the airport sometimes.

Mike have you seen this one that they are talking about at 26 49' 59.06" and 113 08' 21.04"? It looks real but I would like to find some one that has seen it or has taken photos.

JZ - 12-16-2006 at 07:56 AM

I don't see a whale, what am I missing.

Hook - 12-16-2006 at 07:59 AM

I think I see the Virgin Mary on the back of the whale. :o

Leaving in 20 minutes, JZ.

wornout - 12-16-2006 at 08:52 AM

Those are cool. I heard on the radio the other day, KFC put a huge Colonel Sanders in the desert near area 51 in Nevada. They put it there for advertising and are now waiting for the Google Earth map update.

wornout do you know what map datum Goggle earth uses?

Minnow - 12-16-2006 at 09:13 AM

Thats the same artist that did all the rock outlines in Baja. The material he used to make the lines is actually shells. He did this more than 5 years ago, that makes it pre google earth.

Mike,
Unless you're joking this is one and the same. Zoom out in Google Earth and the airstrip is just north and Kuyimita is just west of the whale pair.

It sure looks like semitransparent black marker on the photographic negative to me, but if you've seen it then I'm a believer. There are certainly enough shells out there to make such an image on the ground.

I went to the 15 meter photos on Microsoft Terraserver and I imagined I could almost make out some of the lines.

Map datum only has application if you're looking at a paper map. Not for satellite photos. You can click on "Digital Globe Coverage" at the bottom of the list of Layers on Google and see the year of the image if it's from DG.

The bottom of the image in GoogleEarth shows the provider (s) of the images and the year.

According to this link at Google Earth help, they use WGS 84.

Cypress - 12-19-2006 at 01:23 PM

Earth images of this or that? Snakes? Bugs? Birds? Whales? :o:?: Those dudes had a lot of time on their hands.

I concede you all are correct.

It is apparent that cyberspace does not need to have any reference to reality. This board is living proof.

When I use maps on my computer or handheld GPS I use whatever datum feels good. This week, I am using the Mayan calendar/clock, a Sumarian latitude/longitude datum, and elevations measured in grains of rice (10 grains of rice stacked on their side equals about 16 millimeters, more or less).

Jasmine?
Whole grain?
Basmati?
Arborio?
Long grain?
:P

Bajagypsy - 12-19-2006 at 09:46 PM

Wow...really cool. Most likely some very creative person on a tractor dragging harrows around, but none the less, impressive.
Would be nice if some one in the area could take a day trip to have a look in person...any volunteers???
:wow:

I suspect he programmed a route on a GPS and used it to guide his vehicle. This opens up all kinds of possibilities for wheat fields, salt flats, and snow fields. Consider it the graffitti of the 21st century, or maybe the invasion has started.:D

Whoever carved the whale image and defaced the whole area is no better than someone that dumps garbage alongside the road.:(

Geoglyph of the Whale Kuyima, arte de la tierra.

Francisco Hernandez Zamora aka Gerardo.

Started in 1998.

2,000 feet by 1,200 feet.

Scallop shells left behind by pirate fisherman with jojoba and other desert greenery at intervals along it's path.

Same goes for the egotist who defaced the hillside by Requeson years ago.

That's a pretty sweeping statement. The Nazca lines in Peru, Buddhas in Afghanistan, clearly Mt. Rushmore & Stonehenge are all just litter?

As was posted above the shell piles were from illegal (Japanese as I recall from talking to the Mgr. at Kuyimita) fishing.

Summanus - 12-21-2006 at 05:19 PM

Like Bruce said...beauty is in the eye of the beholder... whatever the source..or con permiso de whoever in the first place without asking the local populance. Most locals there thought of it as an eyesore for years now.

Maybe we can paint the Grand Canyon next? Or redo The Painted Rocks of New Mexico?

Barry A. - 12-21-2006 at 05:26 PM

I noticed last year that the Grand Canyon was fading a little-------probably could use a spruce up, don't you think?

Summanus - 12-21-2006 at 05:27 PM

Barry A....I am complacent. Si como no.
