Whales on their way to Baja! 12-30-06

Being that we are not going to Baja this New Years, the next best thing Baja Angel and I could do on a beautiful Saturday in Oceanside is to go out and see the Gray Whales going to Baja!!!

We spotted a pair just a few miles off the coast... one just blew a spout here...

Thanks Ken... I took about 100 pictures as I am still learing how to use this Nikon S6... We were on a whale watching boat... out of Oceanside. Very few others with us, nice cruise... The photographer and writer for the San Diego Union were on board with us... Said it will be in tomorrow's paper...

Great pixs David.

Ken, I was watching animal Planet last night and they had a piece on a scuba diver where a sea cow or Dugong type sea animal came up behind the guy and put it's mouth over his head several times. He wasn't hurt. They showed two sea lions doing the same thing and said it was a form of greeting. The scuba diver said he thought he was a goner when it happened. After they showed the replay several times you could see the animal wasn't trying to hurt him. But as I watched it I thought of you and your many dives.

Thanks for sharing the pictures----they must now be passing us in Imperial Beach. Sure glad they are headed south.

Can't believe that it was 2 years ago when we last saw them in Laguna Ojo de Liebre and Bahia Magdalena. Sure hope we make it down this year.

I love the barking sea lion---I think he is telling you that you don't have permission to take his picture.

We've been seeing gray whales passing for about 3 weeks now. I'm going to have some of the panga drivers in Scammons Lagoon be a scout for me as I'm thinking if there is a threat of a big quake here, the whales will know it first. When the big one hit L.A., the lagoon emptied out completely of whales so I'm gonna have my buddies keep an eye on the mouth of the lagoon and if they see lots of whales heading OUT of the lagoon, I'm hoping they'll call us! Feliz Aņo Nevo todos!
