Los Barriles Report

windgrrl - 1-19-2007 at 01:52 PM

Having a blast in LB, except for the rainy day today. Sailed 4.7 on Mon. and a 5.7 powered up yesterday. Lots of new construction, some wonderful new restaurants and the hurricane damage is almost cleaned up and repaired.

Best wishes,
w:dudette:

You never got the memo?
Windsurfing's been cancelled due to lack of interest.
Kiting is now your appropriate wind 'fix'.
(c'mon over to the dark side )

There is a big kiting tournament in La Ventanas this weekend.

Had another 5.7 day on Sat. Little wind today. Lots of great wind alternatives...the mountain biking is great. The trails are cleaned up and the flora/fauna is beautiful. Heard about the kite tournament - no results back this way yet.

Going shopping for some Mexican tiles while waiting for the wind...

Adios,

Monday - overpowered on a 5.2 with a 97l board. Swell started early today, hoping for bigger things to come. Nice day mountain biking around town taking pix to post later and shopping.

Eating my way around Los barriles,

That'd be great to see any piccy's. Haven't made it down there in recent years but heard it's one of fastest growing areas! (?)

We left the cold of the Northwest for a month in Baja. We have now
been in La Ventana for about two weeks and there has been wind. It
has not been as good as some years and the beach gossip is that
hurricane John left enough water inland to make the desert green.
This limits the afternoon thermals.

Today was an interesting day for me. It was blowing about 5.0 and I
was several miles off shore playing in the big rollers. I was sailing
in the trough between two big waves when something came up in front of
me about 25 feet from my board. It stretched from the top of one wave
to the top of the other. It was a gray whale.

I sheeted out and dropped off a plane. As I came close the whale went
down but a baby was swimming along side and its tail came within 4
inches of the tip of my board.

This is the largest animal that I have ever need close to. It was
probably 40 feet long and it filled up the trough of the wave about 9
feet.

I have seen whales before but never at less than 25 feet.

If it had come up any closer to me, I would have run into it on a full
plane. I am sure I would have sustained more damage than it would have.

Today is supposed to be the day for wind at La Ventana; continuing into next week.
Wilton; look for the red F350 with big racks and come say hello !! We are in camp !!
If you have been here that long, you must already know my 5 year old - red haired ZACK. He really gets around. After all, he is the mayor of La Ventana !!
Happy sailing !!

And did you catch that moon rise last night ??

We had to leave the good life and go back to work. We were in camp until about January 12 and then back to work in Oregon on January 15.

Hope you have lots of good wind.

:PBeen to La Ventana - absolutley loved the swell, but can you get churros, hand-made sweaters and play an international croquet match all in one dia?!! Last time we were in LV it was cold with not much to do. This time in LB I could at least go mountain-biking or power-shopping...

However, we're counting the days when we can drive down with our own stuff and explore Cabo del Este!

Will post photos for k1w1 this wekend,
