Where did you find that??? LOL!!! I wrote that when I was 15 years old, and self published it... Xerox machine and yellow book report binders.

It was the first guide to the new Baja highway, before it was completed. I was on our family trip to Loreto and Puerto Escondido in July, 1973. Pavement ended near Rancho El Progreso (Mision San Fernando road). Stating again (in pieces) near Punta Prieta.

I sold the book at two Escondido bookstores. It was featured in a newspaper article and on San Diego's morning TV show, 'Sunup'.

After the highway was finished, I was still selling copies with update notes added. By April, 1974 I grew tired of making new copies and retired the little book.

Luisa Porter of the Baja Bulletin Magazine contacted me about using my guide in her magazine. As it was out dated and incomplete (ending near Loreto), my dad suggested we make a big trip to the tip (in July, 1974) to update and enlarge my roadguide to Baja. I was 17 when it was published in the Dec. 1974/Jan. 1975 Special Edition of the Baja Bulletin http://community-2.webtv.net/VivaBaja/dkbook

Porky Pig: Yes, I have a room reserved at Keri's Pyramid Resort for the book signing. Not really even thinking of myself as an author there (from 30 years ago), but to enjoy seeing the current authors and Nomads coming. I also will be there officially to sell Kacey Smith's awesome GPS Baja Motorcycle (and some auto roads) guidebook, in her place. The guide will have an awesome discount only at the Pyramid Resort! So, I might be seated behind a desk instead of milling about. I will bring Viva Baja stickers!

Bob H: I have one copy of the first guide and only a few of the second. Norm Christy who sells and trades Baja publications was the last one I gave one out to... after I saw my roadguide on his 'Want' list! That was a surprise! I traded it for the Howard Gulick 1953-55 El Camino Real report and maps. Those are some of what Harry Crosby used to to guide him to follow the Camino Real, 20 years later. See you in a few days at Nuevo Mazatlan!

Hey Tom, Kacey will not have the second edition ready for at least one year:( Her guide is highly detailed and takes a lot of time to put together. I will bring 4 copies of her first edition for the book signing, unless more people tell me in advance they wish one. The first edition does have that super ride from San Francisquito to San Ignacio via much of the El Camino Real and Santa Marta. Kacey will ship them to me next month. Yes, the regular price is $100 ($99), and only at the booksigning will be a special price. However, I am not at liberty to say just yet what that is. The book is available right now at http://www.bajagpsguide.com

The book is loose leaf and you insert it into your own binder. It is really SUPER!

did the san fran ride through santa marta to ignacio last year.. most beautiful ride ive ever been on. Does the new book have any trails further south than that?

David K - 2-9-2004 at 06:33 PM

I believe on Kacey's web page there is a news release of sorts on Volume 2... Yes, it takes you all the way to Cabo and it will have the 'Puertecitos to Catavina' ride in it... perhaps even Puertecitos across to San Quintin. Also, El Crucero to L.A. Bay without crossing or using any pavement could be in it!

Here you go JR

Bringing it up for you to see... it shows the 31 years wear and tear!
