road to La Purisima or San Javier

In a couple of weeks I'll be driving in that area in a compact rental car. Anyone know if it would be realistic to go from Hwy 1 to La Purisima, or from Loreto to San Javier in that type of car?

thanks, Linda

It has been awhile since we drove those roads. We have done it more than once, always in a big truck with four wheel drive.I would think that if you went really, really, really slow and got out and moved any rocks or filled in areas that create clearance problems you might make it up to San Javier. It is a place that everyone should visit at least once. Maybe you can check with the locals in Loreto when you get down that way for an update on the road or others here may have more recent experience. The only way to get to La Purisima in your type of vehicle would be to go up from the south on the pacific side. If you are lucky you will meet the world famous burro Mision in la Purisima, he's very friendly and be sure and bring carrots!!

ps I would not drive those dirt roads in a passenger car

Road to San Javier should be fine...

I was just there about 6 weeks ago and the road was in pretty good shape. Mini-van taxis from Loreto are making that trip every day. Most of the other roads through that section of the Sierra de la Giganta, however, were in pretty bad shape still at the end of January.
