Camping : North Mag Bay

SteveU - 4-6-2004 at 08:58 AM

The wife, kids, and I are planning our big summer trip to baja. One place we have always wanted to explore is the northern reaches/barrier islands of Mag Bay. We camp out of a 2wdT-100 w/tent trailer, so off-roading is pretty limited. Question is, any recommendations on good places to camp? We have kayaks, and love to explore/fish/surf, so we are looking for good locations to camp & have fun. I would really appreciate some info if possible. You could email me if you want to keep any info private, at steveu@dsusd.k12.ca.us
Thanks!

We travelled the whole (eastern landside) shore of Mag Bay from the top to Puerto Lopez Mateus, and I don't remember anything that would give a 2 wheeler trouble. It is beautiful and mainly deserted. Access to the bay itself is (ironically) difficult in parts because the road travels on the other side of usually impenetrable mangle jungle. But there are gaps.

Hey Steve,
If you have the inclination(and a website) I would love to see some pics and a synopsis of the trip. I'm very interested in the area but don't have the time to make it down there in the foreseeable future.

Either way, have a great adventure!

Last year we returned to Pozo Grande after several years absence. We found our old camp spot and headed out on the high tide to explore old haunts. We were hailed by several different boatloads of fishermen who had seen our rig. They wanted to warn us that bad guys from "al fuera" (outside) were coming to the area and stealing everything they could get their hands on. They had even stolen motors right off the pangas, so now the fishermen took the motors off and hauled them home to the village every night and brought them back in the morning. That day we returned to camp to find the federales swarming over our rig. They left before we wallowed in over the mud flats, but we were actually glad to see their presence after what the fishermen had told us. We went out again the next day in our inflatable but more fishermen pulled us over to warn us. Now we started getting paranoid and returned early to camp. We had no problems but it was a drag to have to worry when we were away from camp. We decided next time we would just give up being "away" and camp next to a fish camp that had someone in residence all the time. I'll definitely go back. It is a magical place and the fishermen are really great people. It's even more of a bummer for them than it is for us.
That said, I would still go. Just take a few extra precautions. Maybe put down the tent trailer when you're out exploring--they're really hard to break into when they're closed.
Have a great time.

On the old amigos board this area was discussed at length. I have a group of friends from Canada who camped there for 2 weeks and they had everything stolen except for one change of clothing and their canadian Money. You are right that it is a magical place but the only safe way to stay there is to have a person in camp at all times to watch the stuff. Hopefully he will be larger than everybody that comes by.
Another friend went there and decided to stay at the fisherman's camp and paid them a few pesos to watch things. His son played with the camp dog who gave him a serious case of the fleas so they had to go back to Constiticion and fumigate the camper as well as delouse themselves. They both looked like they had the measels.
