We logged about 1200 miles in Baja last week, clear to San Francisquito.
Passed through numerous checkpoints, as usual.
And, without fail, the soldiers were courteous, professional and not at all intimidating.
And no requests for handouts!
(When we mentioned the "nieve" in the Parque Nacional they all wanted to see the digital fotos of the snow that we had taken- very interesting how
fascinated they were with this)

I usually end up giving at least one soldier a flash-light every trip. They always love the maglites.

The only requests for handouts I have gotten at the Army checkpoints have been school children with donation cans.
Army stops you and then turn it over to the kids.

I had a nice experience with the soliders in the San Felipe area once. 
It was obviously a slow day at the checkpoint.

Our GIs would be in the brig should they ever do something like that.
.....and I always thought they were UNLOADED guns, or most of em. I guess with all the bad guys around you best not be shootin' blanks!

I've heard that too and I think they were originally unloaded. They loaded the clips from a ruck-sack half full of amo.

Above each picture on the photobucket main page is an "edit" link. Click "edit" then "resize" from the menu list that appears above the picture. The
resize options are limited in photobucket, but it works.

How was the recoil on that tommy gun , or better yet how is your nose?
Also I
notice that one of them has his pistol drawn,is this in case you try and go postal on them?

Thanks for the re-sizing tip.
When on automatic, the gun would recoil pretty good and they warned us to be ready for it. There were 3 settings on the gun - safety, single fire and
full auto. 3 pulls on the trigger would empty the 20 round clip when on auto.
Re pistola, I never thought about them thinking we would shot them, but my friend did not want to follow us over the hill to shoot. He thought maybe
we would not come back. I told him I needed someone to take pictures because no one would believe us without them. He got a few shots in the the 9mm

These have to be some of the most amazing photos of Baja I have ever seen!!! To allow you to use their rationed ammo is one thing but to LET you fire
their weapons is unbelievable.
Someone could have gone to jail for this one.

We asked one 'commandante' (named Scott, of all things) if we could just take his photo.
You would have thought we asked to take over the command post.
To think that they let gringos touch the weapons is pretty amazing.

thought I did. I can't see anything that would cause him to get excited.
