Bajo California: El limite del tiempo-The Movie

tripledigitken - 3-13-2008 at 01:29 PM

About one year ago this movie was recommended here. At the time I went to Amazon and attempted to purchase it, but it wasn't available at the time so I put it on my wish list.

2 weeks ago I went to buy a couple of books and there was the movie on the list. I had forgotten all about it. Well it was available now and I purchased it.

I have to say that to all the Baja lovers here, particulary the ones that have traveled to Baja Sur frequently, you should attempt to see this film. You'll find yourself saying I know that area, even knowing a section of the road in numerous scenes.

My copy, and the only type available currently, is in spanish. However, the dialog is minimal, (and I had a personal translator for what dialog there was). The movie is a visual feast. I could have enjoyed the film not knowing most of the dialog. It highlights the region from Catavina to Santa Rosalia.

The main character is a Mexican man living in California that takes a road trip to explore his roots in Baja by visiting his Grandmother's grave in the Sierra San Fransisco mountains and ultimately visits the cave paintings. You get to meet the actual Arce family guides who are legendary in that region of Baja. Along the way he also visits the whales in the lagoons near Guerrero Negro.

As you can tell I enjoyed the film. I hope that some of you get a chance to view it also.

I have a copy as well. I won it as a raffle at one of David K's Viva Baja Parties. From what I hear, the generous El Gato Loco donated it. Interesting movie for sure but stunning scenery.

How or where can i get a copy of this movie ? I really am interested watching it
since my mother was born in St Rosalia and i have been there only once in 1990. I called the Hollywood video and Blockbuster but they don't have it, I also went to Ebay but did not find it.

Since I bought this movie,I have seen it about 10 times, it never gets old. Everytime I see it again, I see something I didn't see before.Damian goes to Sierra San Francisco looking for his ancestors, his grandmother was an Arce, also to run from a guilt that he carries due to a accident that he was involve in wich he runs over a pregnant women in the freeway, and he fells he is guilty of that, great movie to see.

They also have it in E-BAY

I have the version with English subtitles for the small Spanish parts of the movie... It was shown on the Sundance Channel.

AAA and Baja Topo maps used to show where Damien was in Baja.

The adobe ruins they called a mission are the remains of Rancho Cataviña (I believe)... you can see the corner of the La Pinta Hotel in one scene.

Anyway, a great Baja cult film and love watching it! We showed it at Antonio's Baja Cactus Cultural event at CECUT in Tijuana.

The movie takes a few liberties with places and sequences but that really doesn't matter. I had a VHS copy with English subtitles that I gave to Juan and Shari a couple of years ago. Thought they would enjoy it since Juan is an Arce.

I know this is an old post, but if you go to that link now you get:

Currently unavailable.
We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.

================================================

I have one of the many English subtitle copies made (on VHS) and we showed it at Viva Baja Cactus in Nov., 2006... Perhaps a viewing party is in order?

If anyone has connections with Sundance Channel, it would be great to have their English version available for us Baja nuts (in DVD?)!!!

Damián Alcázar, the star of Bajo California, also starred as Juan Vargas, the ambitious mayor in the film, La Ley de Herodes ("Herod's Law").

In the Internet Movie Database "filmography by rating" for Damián Alcázar, these are the top two films he has appeared in.

The original poster is right . . . this is a beautiful movie for anyone who loves Baja (especially the Sierra San Francisco). Journey along with Damian as he seeks redemption and traces his family's roots.

Also features a cameo by Chema, one of the beloved sierra guides. He plays the guitar and sings in one of the scenes. I asked him about the film (in particular the accent of the man who played the main character, Arce, as his speech didn't sound local). Chema said it was disappointing that they brought in an actor rather than using a real Arce.

The movie can be purchased on Amazon again--on DVD. This is one of my favorites.

The entire movie is on YouTube, also.

Good to know. One of the great ones.

Yes, and it was cool to go up to San Francisco a couple days ago and see the area!
