This 1980 map of San Felipe South 25 miles shows my discovery of the road west to Valle Chico, a road direct to Shell Island from the Puertecitos
road, and other refinements...

The new highway roadbed wasn't completed past Coloradito. The route of it would actually turn away from the coast at Coloradito and rejoin the old
road. Both Santa Rosa and San Felipe was used for the coastal sierra's name on various maps...

I made a cleaner version showing fewer items for a 1983 article I wrote in Tom & Shirley Miller's Mexico West Travel Club magazine... The new
highway's alignment is determined, pavement only to the Hotel Fiesta, the ejido at Agua Caliente built a 4.1 mile long fence across Valle Chico, which
would replace the 3.0 miles ancient road that ended in the big arroyo, then followed upstream 3.2 miles to the Matomi road (6.2 total mi.)

In the 5 years since my last map, they only managed to add about 7 miles of asphalt to the Puertecitos highway!

In Parral between the Sulfur mine and Valle Chico... Note the pair of cardons the road passed between. Years later a trophy truck (I was told) smashed
into one after SCORE started using this pass they call Azufre Pass... On my jacket is the 1979 patch and starters pin for the Baja 1000 race I was
in... below my SCORE patch.

I have a copy of the 1988 map that I aquired shortly after I arrived here in 1995. But -- it has notations for Campo Mayma Campo Nuevo Mazatlan and
C. Saguaro on it that your posted 1988 map doesn't have. Possibly the person I got it from added them but they really look more like your writing.
So maybe it's really a 1988 Second Edition. I used it in conjunction with others I found to begin to learn this part of the world.

Lou, can you scan and email me the map you have? I don't recall adding Mayma (between Bahia S.M. & N. Mazatlan)... but, I did make other maps than the
ones I posted here. I need a new book case and I will find others.
I have a map that shows the beach mileages all the way to Puertecitos. It was pretty easy driving until I passed Coloradito, then it got real
'gravely' around Punta San Fermin. That was tough for my little Subaru to drive on, but I got through!

my last visit to San Felipe was in '73.From what I recall, it was still a little fishing village woith a few offroaders hangin' out.Definitely low-key
and LOTS of fun.Man was I shocked when we went through there on the way back from Matomi two weeks ago-out-of-control.Hopefully, for those who live
there, it's not like that all the time-or is it???

pappy, you came at the very WORST time of the year. The combination of Samanta Santa, and Spring break really fill the place up. The stations used
to all run out of gas on Easter weekend but that hasn't happened recently. The town is now back to it's pretty layed back self. We try to avoid
going into town during spring break and deffinetly during Samanta Santa. For the past week, the municipal employees have been picking up the trash
left along the highway and today they had the trucks out hauling it off.
Don't give up on this part of Baja because of this. It was good meeting you inEl Parral and I hope to see you again when we have more time.
