Los Gordos 14th Annual Anything Goes Chili Cook-Off 8/22/2009

bajabound2005 - 5-18-2009 at 04:47 PM

Mark your calendars for Los Gordos 14th Annual Anything Goes Chili Cook-off on Saturday, August 22, 2009 in La Bufadora! Rules are not as stringent as "real" chili cook-offs but certainly more stringent than Club de Pesca's in San Felipe. We have a lot of fun all day long so we hope that not only will many Nomads come chili tasting, but some of you will want to compete.

In addition to the chili cook-off there is also a salsa contest (the food not the dance) with two categories: hot and regular.

The cook-off starts at 12:00 noon and tasting starts at 3:00. Music, drawings, libations and fun in the sun at La Bufadora.

Check out the website:

(be gentle, it's my first time putting together a site, but would appreciate feedback)

PS: judges wanted for both chili and salsa! Info on the website.

Just a little bumpity-bump so you Nomads are sure to include this chili cook-off in your Baja itineraries this summer. Comes just at the end of Vendimia and would be a great way to end your vacation...by coming to taste or compete! And there is also a salsa competition so if you don't want to compete in the chili cook-off, how about your best salsa. As a reminder, I took first place last year in the salsa contest

PS: Judges wanted! Check out the website for all the info:

The date is coming up fast! We have the pleasure of some "celebrity" judges this year, including Baja Nomad, Udo Winkler!

Come join the fun, Nomads! To top it off, fellow Nomad, Fred-O, is getting married that morning...well, technically, they got married last week in San Diego, but the morning of the cook-off they are have a ceremony in Punta Banda.

Don't confuse Fred-O with Fred...who has been camping on our local beach for the past month or so. Also a great Fred! Hope he is still here for the cook-off!

Bajabound, Bajamigo, Mr & Mrs Bigmike. May your Chili be caliente y your cervesa fria.

bigmike - 8-1-2009 at 06:15 AM

Rob, we won't be cooking this time, I will be a judge this time around. Bajabound and Bajamigo are in charge of the event so they won't be cooking either. I look forward to the tasting this time.

BajaRob - 8-1-2009 at 06:27 AM

I'm sure that it will be a well organized and fun event with you guys involved. Looking forward to photos and report.

Tomorrow is the big day! Hope some Nomads come on by. Another judge will be Nomad, Fred, who is camped out locally for the summer, and Nomad BigMike. So we have 3 Nomad judges! The gig gets going at noon and tasting starts at 3:00. Los Gordos Restaurant in La Bufadora, first restaurant on your left as you come into La Buf.

"And if your name is not appearing above, don't count on being a judge, even if you've done it for the past X years"

Ouch.

Times are changing in P.B.

I'm glad we're not in town this year so my judging feelings won't be hurt. I was one of the "past X years" crew for quite a few X years.

I didn't see Connie Ellig's name on the list this year either. :?:

I'll do a "real" report tomorrow. It's a bit of work running the thing although we had LOTS of help this year! We are still recovering! Nomad Udo Winkler was a judge and he and Mrs. Udo stayed with us last night. He plied us with the most fantastic Mojitos when we returned from the chili cook-off, I made a a lasagna...then, he topped that off with incredible fruit filled crepes. By then it was 10 PM; This AM, he and Jana made the most unbelievable pancakes for us this morning, us and our fellow cook-off coordinators. Blueberries, currents, strawberries, buttermilk....to die for! Then we had to spend the rest of the day recovering from the breakfast!

Word of advice: invite Udo and Jana to spend the night with you! He brings great wine, great food, and great company. Hey, even my dogs liked Udo (loved Jana)! And they are pretty picky!
