NOMAD'S 'BAJA'* PHOTOS (what gives Nomads 'that Pure Baja feeling')

 Pages:  1

David K - 6-3-2009 at 04:09 PM

Photo taken in April, 2001 near old Rancho San Gregorio (just southeast of Mision San Borja)

* There was also a thread on TalkBaja.com called 'Pure Baja' that has no connection to this forum's thread. The name 'Pure Baja' is not a registered trademark or copyright protecting intellectual property, at the time this was posted. Certainly, I did not think only only one person on the world wide web could use it, and I apologize for the irritation it caused the person on the other web site, some time after it was started here on Nomad.

for the photos David. I wish that I could have seen that shrimp boat before it was dismantled. We always enjoyed that "crashed" plane at Percebu and will never understand why the owners thought that it was an improvement to remove it. Newport tomorrow and already missin BSM.

It's always wonderful to see your pictures, David. Thank you!

Oh, and then I discovered pages 2 and 3!!!!!!!

The burning question of the day for the real Paulina: Was she REALLY wearing that great dress and marvelous flats when she caught the sailfish????

And thank you BOb H, Ron and Bajacat-- all just beautiful!

[Edited on 6-5-2009 by Paula]

Paulina - 6-4-2009 at 10:17 PM

Paula,

Yes she was. That was my grandmother. Somewhere I have the photo of her in that same outfit, with the addition of a fighting belt, as the pangero held the fish by it's beak (or is it a bill) as it hung over the side of the rail. She was holding onto it's sail in one hand, her rod in the other. She was so proud.

I need to find that photo.

I really like this thread. I hope to see more of what "pure baja" looks like through other people's eyes.

My memory of the Clam Man;

Sitting on the back of my dad's motorcycle, my arms wrapped around his waist as I patiently waited for their never ending conversations to end.

The two of them looked like they could be brothers and laughed as if they were.

My dad was a large man as well, so the Clam man was very helpful in guiding my dad to a local man who made him a custom leather, desert riding outfit; a vest of sorts with long sleeves that would protect his arms from the cactus, half chaps that would add protection to his lower legs, and a hat large enough to fit his head.

My dad would look forward to our visits to San Felipe which meant afternoons visiting with the Clam Man. It was a sad trip when my dad found out that he had passed.

Thanks Paulina

This struck a cord in me! A classic memory.

My world at 7 seemed to have many such moments. They seemed to arrive at the end of their parties as I waited for them to say their goodbyes.

He started out as a travelling clam merchant in the San Felipe campos and eventually had a store/ restaurant on the main street coming into town... It is still there.

He had painted on the side of his car and on t shirts for sale that said "My Clams Make You Horney"... This was in the late 1970's.

longlegsinlapaz - 6-7-2009 at 12:25 PM

dk, what a cool & unique thread title & idea!! I wish I'd thought of creating a thread entitled "PURE BAJA" & posting random groups of miscellaneous Baja pics!

OH WAIT, I DID!!

I just happened to do it on TalkBaja where I can easily post pics without having to re-size them first.

While it's true there's no copyright on either the title I chose to use, nor the theme of the pics I chose to post 4 days prior to you plagiarizing both my title & my idea & using both here on Baja Nomad, IMHO there is a moral issue & by my way of thinking your actions are below low. Did you honest to GAWD think it'd escape my notice, let alone the notice of others who post on both sites? Ever heard of ethics?

dk, IMHO, this is no different from stealing! I certainly hope you're basking in the warm glow of the positive comments you've received for your originality in creating this thread!:fire: Don't even THINK about responding back to me with "peace, love & fish tacos", or your tired old "can't we just all be friends & get along?" trite, because no we can't!

To everyone else who has posted pics here or has enjoyed the positive vibes of the thread, I offer SINCERE APOLOGIES for the negativity this post brings to the thread, however, I've been seething over dk not even having the common human decency to come up with his own thread title prior to anyone else adding pics to this thread!

Cypress - 6-7-2009 at 01:09 PM

Oh well? The pictures are super! A little drama here and there isn't a bad thing. Looking for more pictures.:tumble:

Oh, and LongLegsInLaPaz... I really have no clue why you hate me so... I have never attacked you in any way here and if is because of politics only, that is sad.. I don't hate or dislike you... we have never met. I heard you were nice to my friend Bernie, and I appreciate that.

Yes, there is a thread on BajaGringo's forum TalkBaja.com that is called 'Pure Baja' and shows photos of bricks being made...???

If that is 'pure Baja' to you... well, okay then...

That only you can call a thread on all message boards 'Pure Baja', is beyond me. If I started a thread on Ron's board and named it the same as yours... well I would be happy to change it to avoid any confusion.

If it bothered you that I started a thread here on Nomad, with the same name, pehaps a u2u or email would have been a mature way to request a change. Your personal attack is just so ... oh, never mind...
Have a nice day!

dk,
Lame response. It was apparent from seeing both threads that one was a copy. Your excuse for plagiarism is one of the weakest I have heard in a while. If you think someone has a good idea :light: and you want to borrow the idea, then cite your source, give credit where credit is due.

landyacht318 - 6-8-2009 at 10:06 PM

Had to chime in.

[img][/img]

[Edited on 6-9-2009 by landyacht318]

landyacht318 - 6-8-2009 at 10:53 PM

I was thinking more along the lines of contrast, The natural beauty of the land, and the local who sees it's fauna as exploitable.

I was intentionally making enough noise to keep anything out of range.

I was going on a Hike. It wasn't a hunting expedition. I was a little miffed he brought the Gun, but I'm not going to tell someone what they can or cannot do in their own land.

Sadly, he's probable drunk or tweaked himself to death by now.

Marine engines tuned!!

landyacht318 - 6-9-2009 at 12:37 PM

It was land behind his family's ranch. He was looking for something worthy to send to a taxidermist for profit. I was feeding him, or his family was feeding him.

I was very sad to see his moral decline as he started using meth, and nothing was apparently off limits when it came to acquiring more. Even stealing from friends and family.
When he tried to include me in some illegal nefarious scheme, I left and have not returned.

Back to the original Idea:

[img][/img]

Cypress - 6-9-2009 at 01:02 PM

landyacht318, You've got a way with words.:bounce: If you're not a writer, you should be.:bounce: Thanks for your picture. :D

landyacht318 - 6-9-2009 at 11:02 PM

Thanks for the compliment Cypress. If you heard me attempt to articulate my thoughts you would retract your comment.

In all reality, pure Baja, for me, is not my former friend toting around his shotgun in a flower field, or the fisherman who didn't realize their motor support 2 x 4 had fallen out and their livelihood was dragging in the dirt.

It's about camping at the ocean's edge with only a few friends. New ones or lifelong ones.

This photo is heavily cropped and was taken by a point and shoot camera through a pair of 8x binoculars from a mile away.
