San Juanico - Scorpion Bay

rockman - 6-4-2009 at 09:49 PM

There is a nice new motel at San Juanico/Scorpion Bay. “Hotel 7 Puntas” occupies the 2nd floor of “Abarrotes Lupita”, on the main divided street near the SW end of the pavement. Clean, Spartan rooms with shower, sink and toilet cost 500 pesos double, 300 pesos single. The store downstairs has a large selection of food and drink, and the owners are very friendly.

did you notice a runway in the immediate area?

rockman - 6-4-2009 at 10:37 PM

I did not check it out since I don't fly any more, but there used to be a nice, long one about 1/2 kmNW of town. Try the Baja Bush Pilot forum.

Michael - long lamented...but there is no more a RW in the area except 8 miles north, Cadeje. but the tire it except when aero medicos come in.
we used to do Sams clinics in San Juanico in the mid 80s.

ask the owner about his wife's dry chorizo... OMG, it is the best chorizo for 150 miles in any direction. kinda like carmelitas tamales are/were one of a kind!!!

Rooms are Nice and clean...

Carlos Fiesta does a "site inspection" of the new hotel. The two front rooms have a great view of First Point.

Use google earth and type in San Juanico, Baja California Sur, Mx it should take you there.

Since you're female (right?) note that its famous for having tons of loner LA surfer guys and about 3 popular girls.

While I am at it... Rumor: Heli1 just landed nearby from DC to visit Loreto and San Jaunico today! They are probably at the internet cafe on the point now.

... I digress. Anyway you see the lot is empty in the photo above, a lot that has been sold many times over???? Still empty. Crazy San Juanico.

Hotel Punta 7

Juan del Rio - 6-7-2009 at 09:09 AM

In the above photo, it is located on the lower left and is the two story building/Orange color on top. Corner of the paved street and dirt street. Internet Cafe is across the street, same side. And yes, the empty lot has many years of history and claims against for payment or title for sure...that is why this great piece of property is still not developed. It use to be the old Fish processing plant in the late fifties and sixties.

A lot has changed in S.J. over the last 30 years! Photo taken in the late seventies and is from the collection of Jamie Adkins/pilot who took the photo. Thought you'd like to see the changes.

more aerials?

steekers - 6-7-2009 at 09:03 PM

Do you have any more aerials of the area? That would help me plan for a flight and landing!

capt. mike - 6-8-2009 at 06:15 AM

Michael - Cadeje is the only strip around for miles.
and it is tired unless aero-medicos are coming.
no place around SJ i am aware of.

Martyman - 6-8-2009 at 08:25 AM

"Siete Putas" what a great name for a hotel!!

bajarasta1 - 8-4-2010 at 10:14 PM

makana check south of abreojos and north of mag bay(bahia de magdelena. its right in the middle. definitely still a cool place to chill out for a bit . but the above quote is right about the man/woman ratio... but then it seems as if most of baja subscribes to that feel. excepting cabo and rosarito of course...lol
glad they got the hotel up and running...

There are 2 San Juanicos in BCS.

The town and Scorpion Bay in question is at 26*15'N, 112*30'W, on the Pacific side.

The other San Juanico is at 26*24'N, 111*28'W, on the Sea of Cortez.

Nice data... by-the-way... to get the degree symbol, hold down the Alt key and press 0186 = º or 26º24'N, 111º28'W

When I was in San Juanico in February 2010, a two stall horse racing starter gate was occupying the "runway".

In 2008, there was a nice wind-sock at Cadeje.

I will re-try the starting gates photo on the San Juanico runway. Thanks for your patience.

There is a fairly new eatery in San Juanico called the El Burro which of course features the burro. Here he is finishing off the day with a drink at the establishment.

b1 - 8-5-2010 at 07:50 PM

And lastly, the storied "Whale Boat" is still resting comfortably on the beach just a tiny bit south of town.

I saw that burro pound a modelo three weeks ago. Pretty funny. We ate the burro every day we were in town.

bajario - 8-7-2010 at 10:24 AM

Meant to say "we ate at the Burro"

BajaBlanca - 8-8-2010 at 06:40 PM

can anyone clarify the legend that burritos are so called cause they really were made out of burro meat, way back when ?

woody with a view - 8-8-2010 at 08:54 PM

a buddy told me the food is called a burrito after the animal, "when it comes walking into town it carries many things on its back."

CP - 8-9-2010 at 09:37 AM

Along those same lines, the explanation that made the most sense to me was that the Burro is actually named for its burden - what it was carrying was the important part, not the poor beasty itself. And that the food burrito is slang for small package. Actually nothing to do with the critter.
Or maybe I just made that up cuz its easier to swallow.
