Diving in BDLA, Mulege, Loreto, La Paz

Islander - 12-1-2009 at 12:53 AM

Heading down south over Christmas and want to get in some great dives. Used to cold water but more interested in the Sea of Cortez side. Not enough time to go further than La Paz.

Lots of diving experience and love the big stuff. We have all our own gear including tanks, weighs, etc. so can even dive if we can find a boat to take us out.

Appreciate any recommendations on where to go and which operators are good in the areas mentioned above (or in between).

We spend our Christmas holiday at San Lucas Cove just south of Santa Rosalia. Have done lots of dives off of Isla San Marcos and Rocka Lobos on the south side of San Marcos. We enjoy the north end of San Marcos and about midway down the back of the island. However Rocka Lobos has an amazing quantity of fish. It's a very small little pile of sand and rock, but the SE corner holds thousands of fish. Just amazing. It is a very shallow dive and is a great snorkeling spot. About the most fish I have ever seen anywhere. I highly recomend checking it out.
We tow our own boat out, so I haven't dealt with chartering anyone. There used to be a guy at the San Lucas Cove RV park who was for hire (an american guy), but I don't know a name (Alan maybe?). There also may be someone out of San Bruno. There is a good dive shop in Mulege. There are two actually, though one is more of a Tshirt shop (a good Tshirt shop). The good one is located up the hill to the left as you come into town. The T shirt shop is located past the center of town as you head towards the lighthouse. I was talking with the folks at the good shop a year or two ago, and it sounded as though they go to Rocka Lobos.

Hi Islander and welcome to baja nomads...good to see another Islander on here....I lived in Victoria for years!!! Our cousin Ricardo has the dive shop in BOLA and do look up Mick at Cortez Exporers for a dive too.

Since Juan just got all his permits to be able to take scuba divers...we are working on a central baja dive package in those 3 locations...check your U2U mail box that is up in the right hand corner under the log-in box.

I'm pretty sure that any of the dive operations in La Paz will meet all your expectations

Mulege diving

Mick no longer owns the dive shop in Mulege. The new shop is named Dive Mulege. We are the new owners of Dive Mulege. Diving here is good especially Isla Tortuga. We do dives out there and the visibility is usually around 100'+ like it is right now. It is a very beautiful island that is a volcano. All kinds of sea life and has some really incredible dives! We also have some great local islands and walls too!
