Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive 2010

 Pages:  1

fdt - 12-1-2009 at 12:27 PM

The 4th annual Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive will be held in Rosarito Beach at the Corona Plaza Hotel on January 10, 2010. We have adopted in the name of all of you Baja Nomads 257 needy children that if not for you all will not have a gift this holiday season. The list is a follows:
Ages 3-4 1 boy, 2 girls
Ages 5-6 3 boys 2 girls
Ages 7-8 30 boys, 20 girls
Ages 9-10 35 Boys, 30 girls
Ages 11-12 33 boys, 35 girls
Ages 13-14 20 boys, 20 girls and
Ages 14-15 12 boys and 14 girls

We have received a generous donation of 37 bycicles so we are only short a mere 220 gifts. We will have, the same as in past years tamales, frijoles and hot chocolate for all the children and of course the traditional Rosca de Reyes.
Times are tough, we know because it's the same everywere but we are confident that with God and your help we will be able to provide for these kids abundantly.
I am calling on all Rosarito area Nomads especialy so you can join us for this exciting event.
As every year some of you can not send a gift or find it easyer to make a donation, I am always hesitant with this because of ovoius reasons but this year we have more than double the children as before and there are always extra ones that show up and since it will be in a hotel in Rosarito, many if not all of them will be bused down there.
So with this in mind and since we don't have a tamale donor, we are requesting that if you can find it in your posibilities please send us your donations to a special Paypal account with the email toydrive2010@ultimatebaja.com

Just go to paypal.com once in go to "Send Money", click on "Send money online", a new window opens and there you paste " toydrive2010@ultimatebaja.com ", then your email, ammount and at the bottom go to Personal, then mark "Gift" and then a new window opens were you can use a credit card or your own Paypal.

Thank you very much and for those interested in mailing or dropping of a gift, it will be at the same location,

Gees---it is in the original post and I overlooked it----oh well, keeps this thread on top where it belongs.

Natalie Ann - 12-1-2009 at 03:17 PM

Glad to hear the donations line is up and running again this year, Fernando. It's nice to know that all my dinero can go to toys or other necessities for the celebration instead of to postage.

Yep these are stressful times financially for many, but I'll bet we each will get a Christmas present. Why not ask a loved one to make your present a donation to this toy drive. I've done that in the past with excellent results.... I awaken Christmas morning with the understanding that light has been brought into the life of a child - and that's all the gift I need.

Try it, amigos.... you might have the same experience as me.

Moving the thread to Baja Events...

..and made a banner from Ferna's image - now placed on the bottom of each page in the forums that links to this thread.

Also, a "shorter" link:
http://tinyurl.com/BajaNomad-2010-DiaDeReyes

This year, it's a lot more kids. Please everyone, see what you can do to help us gain further visibility in your community with this. I appreciate your consideration.

PayPal is a great option!

woody with a view - 12-5-2009 at 06:55 AM

it's secure, doesn't cost anything (to send, mark it as a gift!), it's easy and it'll make you and some needy kid(s) smile on Jan 10. :saint:

your gift will be on it's way in less than 5 minutes.

fdt - 12-6-2009 at 09:06 AM

We need a lot of toys! 257 children are counting on us all.
Toys, donations for food and toys, whatever, it can be done!
Please help.

DianaT - 12-6-2009 at 09:13 AM

Do you still have the links to the last couple of year's events? You know, the old a picture is worth.......

Santiago - 12-6-2009 at 09:32 AM

Just sent in my donation via PayPal. It looks like I will be going to Baja right around new years or so. Anyone in the NoCal area who wants me to take toys down to Ferna for them let me know via U2U and I'll send you my address or we can arrange to meet up.

BajaNuts - 12-6-2009 at 11:01 PM

to the coordinators of this wonderful event-

What would you prefer?

I can do a paypal of around $100 and you can purchase what is most needed or I can purchase some items that I think will be well received and send them to you.

My question is~ would you rather have a little cash to do some last minute....or even basic shopping?.... or some gifts for a specific "child profile"?

What is the best use of the dollars available?

Thank you to those working on the project for those who smile on that day............

fdt - 12-7-2009 at 12:39 AM

Very good question. For the past 3 events I personaly have been hesitant to receive moneys because of the posibility of someone questioning the use of funds. We have always set up a Paypal account because some donors prefer to send funds and let us purchase gifts or food and thank God for that because since the first event, even thou we were donated a bus, we had to pay for the Diesel and driver, we picked up some of the tab for the tamales and then some transportation to get folks from San Ysidro to Tijuana and back that came. For the Ensenada event we were blessed with the Punta Banda Nomads taking care of food for all of the kids and adults that attended and the Hotel Pueblo Amigo donated the Roscas, last year, we had no food for the children, all we could get was a donation for the Rosca de Reyes from Donas Venecia and thankfully Mexicoach sponsored the bus.
The moneys we have received have been a lot of help in the past and we have a couple of Nomads that are always there for that, but it's not many, they can be counted with one hand.
Now this year from the first post we placed the paypal.com with the email address of toydrive2010@ultimatebaja.com because of the fact that we have not confirmed buses nor food donors and we have way over double the ammount of children than in previous years and we want to make it a memorable trip for them since it will be in Rosarito.
https://cms.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/?cmd=_render-content&c...
So, yes, we need a lot of toys, toys that we need to slowly bring down to Mexico because of customs rules ad the kind people at Jackson Hewitt in Chula Vista are once again helping us with the drop off location.
Last year we purchased 20 Dolls and 4 cases of miniature cars and trucks because we didn't have enough toys so the money was used wisely.
I don't know if I've answered the question but yes, we need some funds.
This is not a disaster like a hurricane or a death or a sickness of a known person. It is just 257 needy children that have been adopted in the name of the people that participate in Baja Nomad that otherwise would probably not get anything for this holiday season.
We have never advertised or posted on other boards but this year we did on 3 others, keeping the name Baja Nomad Dia de Reyes Toy Drive, on talkbaja, baja4ms and baja artists. and I would like to thank them for their help with that.
Saludos y gracias
Fenando Garcia y familia

Ferna: can the bicycles by gently used or is new the way to go for this event? I presume that all gifts need to be unwrapped? Do you need wrapping paper, ribbon or do you buy that with the donations.

fdt - 12-8-2009 at 01:19 PM

They can be slightly used and yes unwraped and we need wrapping supplies, please

I have a kid's bike. It was my son's. Maybe for a 8-10 boy.
I guess I'll need to visit you FDT.
I'll meet you at Sanborn's near the Hili. They have a comfortable lounge!
Anybody else got a

I might even try to use my PayPal. I have an account but haven't used it for a while.

Blessings & prayers for another sucessful event.

The first year we went to numerous USA Target Stores and filled shopping carts with clothes/toys/decorations/giftwrap/tape as much as 75% off ..

Also- red&green totes are deeply discounted after Christmas and they made for great gift sleighs.

Is the drop-off place open on Sunday? May wait until tomorrow, but will be in that area today.

Hope to see piles of toys from other San Diego nomads.

Santiago - 12-13-2009 at 10:44 AM

Flowers: I'll be bringing gifts from the Sacramento area either right before or right after New Years. Do you want them dropped off in Chula Vista or somewhere in Baja? I'm guessing 10 to 20 gifts from the response I have had.

Explanation of 'Flowers': I'm a bit lisdexlic and when Ferna first posted I read 'FTD' instead of 'FDT' so it's been 'Flowers' ever since.

If you U2U me with an estimated ETA, Tijuana delivery would be greatly appreciated, we can meet you anywere.
Thanks

BajaNomad - 12-13-2009 at 09:18 PM

Ferna,

While having as much in place ahead of time as possible is certainly helpful (thank you Nomads) - especially with the # of kiddos this year, can we try to keep people appraised of the post-12/25 sales NOB in this thread? Along the lines of what Lori and Tommy of Cabo Magic indicated where they hit the Target stores here when they were 75% off.

A hard task you have taken on.

Do you have a monetary goal that you are shooting for?

If so, where are you in contributions ($) and how long do you have left.

A running total of contributions may help you along. Not sure how you would use third party software to keep current on the board, but sure there are some very smart people out there that could help

Wish you all the luck in the world and a Merry Christmas for all the little folks that need some love and attention very much at this time of the year

God bless you and for those who don't go that way, thank you for being a human-being

Fernando before you know it these will be on their way to Chula Vista. Just waiting for a couple of more that were on-line orders.

This year we do have a monetary goal and that is because we received sponsorship from the Corona Plaza Hotel in Rosarito to have the event there and also so the kids can have a day out at the same time. We started with 257 children, now it's 262 and I don't know how many more (I was told it would not be more than 400, wow), because they will be from diferent areas, diferent Casas Hogar.
The goal is to also feed these kids one meal each consisting of tamal, beans, rosca de reyes and drink (usualy hot chocolate). I am yet to get a donation for the rosca de reyes wich does'nt worry me much since some super markets have them on special by the 10th of Jan. The meals are another story, plate, fork, cup, napkin, tamal, beans, chocolate is at this time, already placed in Rosarito $30 pesos per person, I'm barganing so we are at 7,860.
For transportation we have 2 big buses sponsored for about 65 kids each plus 2 adults so that is 130 of them already aken care of. I am yet to get another 2 and if we get no sponsorship it would be 4,000 pesos round trip each.
We have to provide diesel for the two sponsored buses wich I have no clue how much that is and food for the drivers.
The other thing is toys, we need lots of them and last year we were short and purchased 20 dolls and some cases of small toy cars.
So, at this point 7,860 food
8,000 transportation
? Diesel
? Rosca de Reyes
? Aditional toys.
Received:
2 of $25
1 of $10
1 of $20
3 of $50
3 of $100

Not many toys.

Agree totally, it's painless to give via the internet using PayPal and I think just about all could afford $10 USD.. :o:o

Saw the stats, there are over 5,000 members.. pretty sad showing in my book, only around $500 dollars.. for all the "Baja Nomads" .. :(:(

Just do IT!! you will feel much better and the "kids" will too... :saint::saint:

Just go back to page 2 of this thread to see some photos of this event in the past and there are links to more---read the story about the red bike.

As we have in the past, we are having our son buy more toys for this drive as his Christmas gift to us---others have done the same thing. In addition to seeing the paypal account soar, we hope to see the Christmas tree at the drop off spot in Chula Vist with piles of toys.

It is tough as there are so many places of need, but just a little from all active Nomads will make a difference.

Thank you very much to all that have helped.

For those not familiar with paypal, it's been around for a long time. It's now owned by eBay. 73 million accounts. Paypal accounts are handy things to have.

Since a lot if not all people that frequent or participate on this board will be getting gifts for christmas at Toys R Us, Walmart, Target and other stores. Why not, if at all possible, purchase a gift card for the toy drive, in any ammount and send it for the toy drive?
If you think this is a good idea, U2U me for an address were to mail it.

BAJACAT - 12-19-2009 at 09:26 AM

Ferna when you said ' THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD NOT BE MORE THAN 400 KIDS", I thought this was your event and that you pick the number of kids..
That to me seems to be a high number of kids if we take in consideration that this will be possible only with contributions from this website IMHO..

PS. Hi hope we had the means to make all the kids happy and not have to send some without a present or bike , maybe then the kids number wouldn't be factor. But the reality is way different from what we want..

BAJACAT - 12-19-2009 at 09:36 AM

I hope you are right..

Santiago - 12-19-2009 at 09:55 AM

Now this is a good idea Ferna. Very easy to buy a $12-$20 gift card and mail it. Would work for those who feel uncomfortable with the Paypal thing. Also, many folks will get these cards as gifts -- why not do a little 're-gifting'?

fdt - 12-19-2009 at 10:16 AM

# 1. It's not my event. Never has been.
# 2. Proverbs 3:5-6
5Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
6In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
# 3. Hope is not Trusting.

The only number one should concern themselves with;

Will the children have a Merry Christmas...

Seems like only one day out of a whole year should be possible...

Let's give just a little, to afford the little ones, just one big day of "magic".. show that someone really does care about them..:):)

What will these kids do with a gift card from US WalMart or Toys-R-Us?

Dennis

Use U2U to get the address to send your gift card.

I was going to send you a couple of war bonds, Gull. I'll see if I can find a card from Sex Toys-R-Us.

fdt - 12-19-2009 at 12:05 PM

Just received another $50. Gracias

Oso - 12-19-2009 at 12:14 PM

Great idea, I'll go for that. The real PayPal is maybe safe, but I have gotten scam mail at work from someone regarding my PayPal account when I don't have one and would not contact them from work if I did.

I think Flowers is going to use them to buy gifts.

The Gull - 12-19-2009 at 12:31 PM

I'm covering that with a CostCo gift card today. Better spirit, Dennis. I knew I could count on you.

woody with a view - 12-19-2009 at 12:48 PM

JUST DO THE PAYPAL.

ever since al gore invented the internet things have gotten better. do you guys do your taxes the old fashioned way, or do you do them online? how about your banking?

PAYPAL!!!

fdt - 12-19-2009 at 12:52 PM

Wow, thanks to all, we've received 2 offers for gift cards already.
What we will do is do the shopping with the cards depending on the kids and ages. Of course we will not give them to these children. As I have always mentioned, it is not the Fernando event, it's your's all event, we are just the vehicle.

Don't want to dis anyone on this happy occasion, Woody, but you are obviously not from the South. As a contraction of you and all, the apostrophe belongs between the y and the a.

Now all y'all have a right merry crissmus, hear?
