What's the current opinion on traveling (slowly) down the road from San Felipe to Hwy 1 in a 2wd, low-clearance, rental car?

DON'T DO IT (out of respect for the rental company). You need medium or better ground clearance, south of Puertecitos... 2WD is okay. Rent a pickup or
SUV.

thanks for advice - I had initially tried to book a SUV or p/up from rental agencies in Tij that had websites (I'm travelling in from London, U.K)
but none available for hire from those sites - so I'll stick to the major roads
