Puzzling Town Name

(This isn't anything Jesse, Cactus, Stephanie, et al. will want to read, but may be interesting to other people like me, who wobble around in Spanish.)

After moving to Albuquerque a few years ago, we sometimes drove by a town called Los Luna, a name that looked a tad peculiar. The moon is feminine, for one thing, and it's singular rather than plural for another.

Then one day the Albuquerque Journal published a piece on how the old Luna family home in this town was being restored--and the name finally made sense.

In English we refer to "the Smiths" and "the Garcias," but in Spanish the plural form for families is "los Smith" and "los Garcia." So the name of the town has nothing at all to do with the moon--it's the place where Los Luna once established their homestead.

Not at all Bajalera...

This kind of things are very interesting... you know, people are raised alongside their mother tong, so the way of rationalizing things end up different from society to society.

I do not know about everybody else, but to me is always very interesting to learn how my fellow humans on this earth processes their thoughts, and you would be amazed on HOW MUCH you can learn through their eyes...!!!
