MEXICO CITY ? Soldiers in the port city of Ensenada discovered nearly three tons of marijuana hidden inside a big rig hauling ice cream, the armed forces said Wednesday.

On Saturday, infantry soldiers at anti-narcotics roadblock outside the industry and tourism hub 1,380 miles (2,110 kilometers) northwest of Mexico City in Baja California state stopped a truck hauling boxes of Holdanda ice cream, the Defense Department said in a statement.

Inside the truck's refrigerated storage area they discovered 1,610 plastic packets containing 2.710 metric tons (2.99 U.S. tons) of marijuana.

The truck's driver, Miguel Arnulfo Valenzuela, was arrested on drug smuggling charges.

That discovery was the largest of six marijuana seizures soldiers made across Mexico last week. In all, the army discovered more than 9 metric tons (10 U.S. tons) of marijuana and arrested six suspected drug smugglers, the statement said.
