bajaguy - 5-28-2011 at 01:05 PM

OOPs, sorry bout that

Dave - 5-28-2011 at 01:30 PM

I wouldn't carry a 9mm. My CC is a Glock 29. Big difference in stopping power between 9-10mm.

bajaguy - 5-28-2011 at 01:41 PM

My carry gun is a Glock 23..........I want something smaller/thinner.........looking for ideas

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 5-28-2011 at 01:45 PM

hola bajaguy,

as you stated, " NON-BAJA TRIPS " and i am sure you are aware of the problems you can encounter in mexico with a gun or even just ammunition.

i carry either a loaded sig 380 or a browning 9mm high power when i travel on long distance trips. yes, i keep it loaded and next to me when i'm driving and IF i get pulled over, i will put my hands on the steering wheel and tell the cop i do have a loaded gun next to me.

there will be consequenses if caught but i'd rather be safe than sorry when driving through desolate areas with my wife.

i guess i've been lucky not being caught or having to use it as i've been doing this for over 30 years and if we check into a resort, i unload the gun and declare it and have it put into the hotel safe.

i also carry one when surf fishing with my wife in desolate areas. it used to be legal as i do have an article in an older fish and game article. i don't know if it's currently legal though.

Glock 27 is a subcompact of the 23. They also make a 40 barrel for the 29 which is also a subcompact.

I'm not worried about concealed or otherwise carry......I hold an HR-218 card from Nevada.....and I usually carry a Glock 23 in .40 caliber, just wanted something smaller/slimmer to carry in my back pocket.

The very best gun for self defence is a 12 gauge shotgun. Load that baby up with as many rounds of 00-buckshot as it will hold and give thanks to the good Lord that you're not on th receiving end of what comes.;)

First of all, I would use #4 buckshot, and second of all, it doesn't conceal very well..............I already have a shotgun, looking for a pocket pistol!!!!!!

Terry

BajaRob - 5-28-2011 at 02:51 PM

It is a great weapon for self protection. It is so small that you can stick it behind your money in a front pocket and it is undetectable. Downside is that it is only accurate for 5-10 feet. But when you need it you are within 5 feet. And a 380 hollow point has a lot of stopping power even on a tweeker.

Rob...........the LC-9 is a 9MM, about 1/2" larger than the Ruger LCP in 380....and yeah, I have shot the LC-9.......just looking for any Nomads that might have one......Thanks.

ak47 with a 30rd clip is also hard to beat, and you have to be a extremely cruddy shot to not hit something 1 out of 30 times you pull the trigger. neither is CC however.

I have a xd45 and it's a little big but it packs a wallop and has 14 shots if I remember right.

Cypress - 5-28-2011 at 03:00 PM

#4 buck? Oh Yea! That will ring your bell.

BajaRob - 5-28-2011 at 03:12 PM

Sorry Terry, I thought you were asking about the LCP. How do the ballistics compare between the 9mm and the 380? I had a Walther 380 and it was a cannon.

10 oz .38 with laser. You'll make up the difference in accuracy.

That is a nice little gun - easy to hide too...

Pompano - 5-28-2011 at 05:10 PM

Dirty Harry's line about the 44 Magnum being the most "powerful handgun in the world" has not been true for some time.

There are many handguns chambered in rifles calibers for hunting and long range shooting. These pistols, in calibers such as .308, 8mm, 30-06, etc, are far more powerful than the .44 Magnum.

In recent years, large bore revolvers have been made in very powerful calibers, such as the .460, 454 Casull, .500 S&W, etc. There are even a few special handguns that fire the 12 g shotgun shell.

However, a challenger for the title of the "world's most powerful handgun" may be the Maadi bolt action pistol, in caliber .50 Browning Machine Gun. Extremely heavy, large, expensive, and of limited usefulness- but powerful.

There is also a one of a kind custom pistol in .600 Nitro Express. There are videos online of a man shooting it where the recoil rips it right out of his and and flings it behind him.

Now you know I am not recommending any of the above for what you want. Choosing a small, yet powerful pistol is a very personal thing. Has to do with 'feeling' and 'comfort' and 'expertise'.

You already know what you want...just get enough practice to make it practical to use.

Good luck...and I hope you never have to use the weapon.

Bajafun777 - 5-28-2011 at 10:42 PM

Have you shot a Walther PPK .380? I have one and really like it but my go to weapon that stops whatever it hits is my Colt 45 Combat Commander. Sweet shooting weapon this Colt 45 and the Walther PPK .380 takes some practice to get use to it but when you do it will do the job as concealed weapon.

Now, I know everyone on this board knows Weapons is Mexico is quick trip to prison down there. Only way is to belong to a gun club and only the Mexican General at an Army Base can sign off on any American having a handgun in Mexico to my understanding. This is next to impossible from my information sources. Unless, someone else knows something different or times have changed this process. I'm still a Sig 40 man, but for CC everyday around town (in the USA) is a Kel Tec P3AT. One of my Sigs is always closeby though, in the car, under the end table, in the night stand, in a picture frame on the wall, the twelve guage is in the closet or course loaded with 00 Buck, etc etc etc.:O:wow:

The pistol you can barely see in the photo is probably one of the smallest conceal guns you can find. In 22Mag hollow point packs plenty of punch.

My choice is the Mark 4 Commander, 1911 officers model.

I'm a Ruger kinda guy...

...On our recent trip over into the 'wilds' of Nevada, we took several of our 'companions' to blow out the kinks and 're-qualify' our aim...It's great to be near the great outdoors of BLM land to explore...

My favorite is my Old Model Ruger 357 Magnum...bought it new back in the 60's, still handles like a dream and it's 'report' alone will scare most men or beasts! :wow:

...I've also got a Ruger Mini-14, Stainless, .223 Remmington, original model from the 70's...picked up several grandfathered 30 rd clips before California outlawed em'...

Great rifle for all around general usage, except big game, of course...a fun piece to 'chase' metal targets...;D

I hunt with a .41 Mag and love it. It may not be as powerful as Clint's .44 but with much less recoil, it's sweeter shooting and powerful enough for most any North American big game. I'm not interested in hunting elephant. It was especially nice for canoe hunting in the swamps of NC. Few long shots anyway and made it unnecessary to drop the paddle to pick up a rifle. I hope to use it for Jabali here in AZ. I'll take accuracy over power anytime.

For CC, I have a 5 shot .38 with no hammer spur to snag on clothing. I wear a lot of guayaberas in the summer, so it fits nicely inside my belt. It may not have the firepower of a Glock, but I can't imagine a protracted gun battle in my future, so it's enough. I procrastinated and never got around to getting a CC license. Now I don't have to. I love Arizona. Actually, I almost never carry, but it's nice to know that I can if I'm concerned about safety traveling somewhere in AZ, like Mesa maybe. Unfortunately, where I'm most concerned is in Mexico.

The gunslingers should like this:

An Arizona Department of Safety Officer pulled over a pick-up truck owner

for a faulty taillight. When the officer approached the driver, the man

behind the wheel handed the officer his driver’s license, insurance card and

a concealed weapon carry permit.

The officer took all the documents, looked them over and said. "Mr..
Smith, I see you have a CCP. Do you have any weapons with you?"

The driver replied, " Yes sir, I have a 357 handgun in a hip holster, a
.45 in the glove box and a .22 derringer in my boot."

The officer looked at the driver and asked, "Anything else?"

"Yes sir, I have a Mossberg 500 12 gauge and an AR-15 behind the seat."

The officer asked if the man was driving to or from a shooting range
and the man said he wasn't, so the officer bent over and looked into the
driver's face and said "Mr. Smith, you're carrying quite a few guns.

May I ask what you are afraid of?

Mr. Smith locked eyes with the officer and calmly answered,

"Not a f#@king thing!"

I had the same gun in the 44 Mag. Was shaving lead badly. I sent off to the factory for an adjustment via UPS and that was the last I saw of it. I still have the Ruger Carbine that uses the same ammo.
