Ron Hoff/Bajagringo attacked

Hi Nomads,

In a bit of shock here, I just learned from a good friend of Rons , that yesterday he was attacked by a group of burglars near his home in San Quintin. Apparently he saw a group of people near a neigbors house which was unoccupied. When he went to investigate he was attacked by up to 7 guys, when his Wife Christina went to investigate they cut her throat. Luckily another neigbor saw this and called the police, apparently they caught these pieces of chit, but now both Ron and his Wife are in critical condition at a hospital in Ensenada (sorry I don't know which). His daughter has been notified. Could someone in Ensenada please try to find out which hospital? Lets all keep our fingers crossed that both pull through! He has an indominable spirit which I hope will serve him well in this horrible crisis!

Horrible news. Ron is one of the nicest, most gracious, considerate, and intelligent people I have met on the Board. I hope he and Christina have a complete recovery.

This is such devastating news to me and everyone who know Ron and Cristina. I just text message him yesterday to invited him and Cristina to Mama's birthday this October as I do every year. No wonder he could not respond. God this angers me to the point of murderous rage. I hope they caught all of the scum-bag degenerates responsible who did this to them. I can only hope that they are receiving the best of care. My prayers are with you Ron and Cristina for a full recovery. I hope your families have been contacted and are at your sides right now.

Maybe he's not in a hospital. We never heard of his condition....only Cristina's.

Dennis according to Chava poor Ron had massive head trauma, and that both were in critical condition. Hes on his way to Ensenada right now I told him to call me when he heard. I'm going to a nearby mountain to check for messages.

Thanks Mike..........The doc just called. I gave her Blanca's info and she called the hospital, Marisela who is a social worker, but she would give no info over the phone.
Cristina is in emergency and there is a family friend with her so she's not alone.
Marisela knows nothing about Ron.

My doc friend is on her way over to the hospital to get the first hand info.

Ok I was pretty stunned when Chava told me but I'm pretty sure he said that they were both at the same hospital cause he had aready gone home and was driving back to Ensenada. Is it possible they stabilized his conditon enough to medevac him stateside. Is he not a vet and is it possible hes at a hospital in San Diego?

Ron and Cristina are golden. This is tragic to happen to anyone, let alone two of the nicest people on this earth. They put everything on the line for Baja and their abalone project. I know they have several dogs that will need caring for until they recover. Is anyone near enough to their place in SQ do that? Too bad he didn't take his Dobie with him to investigate. Just tragic, I'm stunned.

Dr Janene just called after going to General Hospital.
Cristina is in IC on a breathing machine and in GRAVE condition. No prognosis.

Ron was evidently transported from SQ at a later time than Cristina and is on his way to Hospital Del Carmen in Ensenada where the surgeons await his arrival.

Cristina has Seguro Popular insurance for General Hospital....which isn't saying much and I don't know how Ron is covered. Anyway, he'll be in a better place than Cristina.
Dr. Janene is heading over to Del Carmen now.

I think we're down to the serious praying stage.

Please let me know if there is anything else that needs to be done. Adrian's uncle works at Sanatorio del Carmen but isn't in today, I'll call him tomorrow and ask him to keep us posted, if and when they stabilize ron I'll swing by and visit him to make sure everything is ok.

Dr Janene just called after being at Del Carmen. The hospital is telling of a man and wife who are with Ron and Cristina. I'm assuming it's the people who came north with them. The woman is hanging with Cristina and the man is at Del Carmen, but had stepped out so Janene couldn't grill him.
The hospital is virtually unmanned today and there are no surgeons in waiting. It wouldn't matter since the hospital can't make a move without family consent and their contact info is being kept a guarded secret by the man who has it....whoever he is.

Cristina has family in Tijuana, but I have no idea what they're up to.

It's Dr. Js professional opinion that Ron has to be taken to the states immediatly due to the lack of diagnostic tools in the local system. Very few MRI machines.
It is also her opinion that Del Carmen will oppose this idea as Ron is a cash-cow. She says the facility is grossly inadaquate.

Dr. J can't understand why he wasn't taken to the border when he was transported, if his life was their primary concern.....who knows.


Perhaps Marty Cortez at TalkBaja, I know he's following this, could get in touch with Ron's family so things can proceed. It's all in their hands at this point.

But what is the Del Carmen Hospital issue? Are they worried about getting paid?

Air ambulance to the U.S. sounds great, but I believe you have to have the insurance to cover it.

There is a "state-of-art" MRI lab in TJ - Imagen.

He could be transported by ambulance, undergo the MRI and be treated by one of the hospitals in TJ.

I am shocked by this. We all talk of "Crime in Mexico" and it can be academic with arguing statistics, etc. until................it happens to a friend or family then it's just so damn personal. It fills you first with sorrow then the anger creeps in................

Ron has talked many times of family in So Cal!
