AmoPescar - 9-12-2011 at 01:59 PM

GREAT NEWS!!!

LET'S ALL CONTINUE TO KEEP THEM IN OUR PRAYERS!

Pray that their healing continues...that their doctors continue to have the wisdom and skills needed for their treatment. Also...that the family be given strength in their time of need and that they have the wisdom to make the necessary decisions

i agree.
i've never seen anything like it.

Katiejay99 - 9-12-2011 at 02:02 PM

Can we assume that Cristina is awake and talking? Anyone know anything about her condition? I can't wait to hear what Serinita has to say after talking with Rons daughter.

latina - 9-12-2011 at 02:02 PM

Wow! That's certainly encouraging... We'll keep them in our prayers.

jureal - 9-12-2011 at 02:02 PM

That's all good news. Thanks everyone. Praying for a speedy recovery.

They were trying to take out his breathing tube but he was struggling a bit. He also has a broken jaw. Caty got all this talking to Christina and her husband. Cristina was NOT cut in the throat as the story was told in the papaer (and what I heard from Chava) but they tried to strangle her! So both are improving by leaps and bounds!!

Thank you Mike!

Very different report from the others, but it comes from his daughter so there it is. Let's pray it's accurate. Fernando and I are still on standby and will remain so should anything change.

I also spoke with Fernando on the phone and received the same info. FDT also mentioned the Hoffs have paid over $5k thus far. FDT says he spoke to Christine Hoff on the telephone, and he now has her direct tel#. Christine is aware of this thread, but is not monitoring it, and indicated she was not aware of the $$$ that were being offered to help transport Ron.

FDT also mentioned - per his conversation with Christine - that the prognosis for Cristina was same/similar, and that she was expected to go home in a few days.

BTW... have an email from a Nomad offering an additional $1k towards assisting both Ron and Cristina if necessary - for anyone that's keeping count.

AmoPescar - 9-12-2011 at 02:34 PM

FYI to all...

Just received another call from Celia with Binational Emergency.

Celia said she had spoken with the daughter and confirmed that the daughter did not wish to have them transferred, moved or evac'd. The daughter told her they are improving and may be released soon, just as Fernando was told earlier.

Again...PLEASE keep ALL in your prayers!

SiReNiTa - 9-12-2011 at 02:39 PM

Hey everyone, I just talked to Christine on the phone a few minutes ago and can also corroborate the stories posted above.

Cristina is awake and talking, christine was with her for a couple of hours this morning, they will be releasing her from the hospital in the next couple of days.

As far as Ron is concerned he did get an MRI and there were no blood clots, trauma's or anything else that was immediately life threatening. The only swelling he has is due to the blow's he took to the head, but other than that he is stable and they are in the process of taking the breathing apparatus out. He is still sedated tho.

Neither Cristina or Ron will be moved, for a few different reasons, Christine did tell me that the doctors are treating them both very well, Ron has 24/7 doctor surveillance and is getting all the attention he needs. She sounded confident that the doctors at Del Carmen are doing a great job, which gave me some peace of mind.

She also told me she would continue to update me as far as their status goes through FB or phone.
Christine also expressed extreme gratitude towards the funds that have been raised as the bill for the hospital is pretty darn high (about 5k so far), she is heading back to the U.S. to check her father's finances in case they need more.

I'll keep updating you all as I get more news, I'll head over to the hospital in a little bit to see if I can get any more info but I doubt it.

This has been one heck of a ride, but thank God all of our efforts and prayers are working and both Ron and his wife are getting better.
Keep them in your prayers and thanks to everyone for pulling together this mass effort!

shari - 9-12-2011 at 02:40 PM

I just spoke to sirena who also spoke to Cristina Hoff who confirmed that both ron and cristina were doing fine and would be released soon. Daughter Cristina is heading back home to deal with some financial issues and was very very relieved that there were some funds available...great Ferna is in contact with her too.

After discussions with the doctor, she did not want to move Ron because she felt he wouldnt want to be in the states while Cristina was here.

What would be nice is if people could be present at the hospital as a vigil and for support...I'm not sure who is with Cristina.

Skipjack Joe - 9-12-2011 at 02:44 PM

What a relief to read all this.

For future reference where would one go to get a MRI scan in Ensenada?

angels4 - 9-12-2011 at 03:19 PM

Shari- We should be at the hospital by 7:00am Wednesday. My husband and brother will leave me with Cristina so I can stay with her all day. They will head down to Ron's house to check things out and will be back later that night. You can count on me for Wednesday to be with Christina all day and night. Prayers are being answered. We leave tomorrow night from Bakersfield that is why I figure our ETA will be around 7:00am... Take care.

I have a question?

estebanis - 9-12-2011 at 03:24 PM

So now that we are hearing they are going to recover. What happens to the bad guys who did this? Does Ron and his wife have to live in fear of reprisals? This whole thing sucks in so many ways!

@baja1943 : as far as we know Velmar hospital has an MRI, so does Sanatorio Del Carmen, in both the prices are pretty high up there but I guess in an emergency those are your known options so far :)

@ Angel, don't hesitate to call me if you need anything here in Ensenada!!

There are several very good places to go in fact my brother in law probably had the best. He also has a cat scan. What gets me is that the IMSS Hospital send patients by ambulance to his business on Cortez for tests. They don't have the machines that he does.

angels4 - 9-12-2011 at 03:33 PM

Yes, sirenita. My phone has international coverage so I should be checking messages. I talked to your beautiful mom today. Sending her a FB request and you too. A million thanks for all that you've done. What a loving heart you have. You both made me a believer again. We visited Ron and Cristina last month with our two little boys and they were very sad when we had to leave. They love San Quintin... -Laura

I just read of this horrific incident perpetuated on our amigo Ron and his wife. I phoned my "family" in San Quintin and they are in fact keeping an eye on Ron's home. My friend and his brother discovered Ron and one gave chase while his brother stayed with Ron and phoned police.

angels4 - 9-12-2011 at 03:47 PM

sanquintinsince73- Can you please find out if Ron's dogs are ok. I want to stop and pickup food for them before we head down south. I am worried about them too. I hope they are unharmed. They are Ron and Cristinas's fur Babies and I want to know that they are fine. (Your brother probably knows mine. His house is a few feet away from Ron's house.) Just want to take any needed food for the dogs.

mtgoat666 - 9-12-2011 at 03:51 PM

now that all seem to be mending OK,... what really happened? stories say theft-interrupted, car-jacking, massive trauma, just-a-flesh-wound, etc. ??????????????

fdt - 9-12-2011 at 04:00 PM

Ok, I'm back. Call it whatever you want but there was a lot of prayer activity and that is very, very powerful!
I personaly spoke with Ron's daughter Christine and now have her direct phone number so does she have mine. I will be calling her again. First I introduced myself to her, told her I was friends with her dad and so on....... I told her about the ambulance with IC care that I had ready to go at her indication and also mentioned the dollar support offered here to help pay for bills and such things..... Well, much to my surprize she told me that her dad was doing much better, they were going to disconect the breathing machine and that he sould be back home in about 3 days ( it did'nt sound like to San Quintin, maybe Ensenada, don't know). She told me that they had just finished paying over $5,000 dollars and that was for MRI's and other tests and to thank you all here at Baja Nomad for the support ad readyness to help her dad. Cristina is also doing much better and should also be out of the hospital soon.
So there was no MRI facility and now there is, along with other stuff previously mentioned and now all is well. "Prayer"
You all are a great group of people here, thank you so so much for keeping our friend and his wife in your prayers.

Respetuosamente
Fernando

hang em high.

vgabndo - 9-12-2011 at 04:05 PM

Ah paciencia cabron, we're still in recovery mode here amigo. I am very emotional with gratitude for the apparent near miss of a real tragedy. It appears we may soon have a first person explanation of the event. Wouldn't it be cool to wait for that? Others are anxious to share what they know, so you'll probably get your wish sooner rather than later.

Blessings amigos. It can happen anywhere.

Finding the hospital was easy. Thanks to everyone for directions. At the hospital they were very amable. As it turned out my blood is O positivo but they said it was not a problem to exchange it for the A+ blood that was used. They would only take one bag and they said Ron took two so if anyone else is in the neighborhood.... I know it's not much but I'm sure every little bit helps.

I was so happy to hear the updates!

wsdunc - 9-12-2011 at 04:19 PM

Got to this thread late because I was away for the weekend. The confusion that comes with modern communication is impressive, kind of like the game post office on steroids. But one thing is a constant. The Nomads are good folks to know if you are in trouble. And Sirenita is the coolest, Shari you raised a great human being.
I hope I never need to send out an SOS, but if I do I hope the Nomads pick up on it.
Watching the Nomads at work can kind of restore your faith in humanity. Sometimes its hard to see during some of the petty squabbles but underneath this rough exterior there is a communal heart of gold.

Hospital Velmar is theonly one I am Familar with It is pretty much a Full service Hospital ,Emergency,Lab,Outpatient clinic
compared to the U.S. their fees were about as much as my Co Pay was.

SiReNiTa - 9-12-2011 at 04:30 PM

Update:

I just spoke with Christine again, she says that unfortunatly at the hospital (Sanatorio del Carmen) they only take cash, and they paid all the cash they could get which was about $5000, but there is still 25000 pesos needed by tomorrow to cover the expenses of the blood transfusion and treatment that Ron is being given.
Christine and her husband could not cover this as they had no more cash and Del Carmen would NOT take a credit card.

She also told me that her dad was slowly being taken off the sedatives, that he can hear her but can not answer yet. Christine also reports that Ron is looking much better than Cristina as far as external injuries go.

Apparently they will be performing a surgery on Ron, but they are just waiting until he is successfully off of the breathing apparatus and off the sedatives, as well as the swelling needs to go down a bit more.

Thats all for now, I'll post more news as soon as I get it.

Big thanks to all nomads who are helping and sending prayers and positive vibes, I will now go spend a little while with my family as they are feeling a bit left out.:O:O:O

I can't wait to see that whacky face avatar of Rons on here again. I gave him a hard time about it years ago - but it cracks me up every time I see it. With a broken jaw he may not be able to talk - but hopefully he can type (when he feels up to it).

Way to go Nomads - This is exactly why I enjoy being a part of this community - everyone pulls together when needed.

Please make sure Ron's daughter knows the exchange rates and to goto a bank to change dollars. It's close 13 pesos per dollar right now.

Paula - 9-12-2011 at 05:29 PM

Is it possible that Ron has private US health insurance? Many companies do cover out of country care. It isn't always easy to get them to pay up, but if you are persistent they do.

Edit:
It is necessary to pay the bill in cash or by card if they accept it before leaving the hospital. but insurance companies will reimburse. The hang-up is that they want very detailed receipts-- American style and in Englis and US$. This is not always possible, as Mexican records are not formatted the same way as US hospital records. But they do still have to pay, and after much "discussion" they will come through.

the US hospitals now have reason to discharge patients ASAP: revised medicare will not reimburse hospitals for hospital-acquired infections,... if they had same law in mexico, they would send you home pronto with an IOU!

can a person really not walk out of a hospital w/o paying? what are they going to do, shoot you?

No, it's a hospital, they administer lethal injection.

SiReNiTa - 9-12-2011 at 05:57 PM

I'm only the messenger, I was told by Christine that the total amount needed by tomorrow was 25000 pesos. I was also told by Christine that they have been performing MRI's on Ron, that they DO have an MRI machine in the hospital where Ron is being tended to.

I can not vouch for it as if I have seen it with my own eyes, I can only tell you what I've been told by the closest person at hand, which is Ron's daughter who has talked to the doctors first hand.

fdt - 9-12-2011 at 06:26 PM

I just spoke with Christine again and they / she did see the MRI's and everything. As sirenita wrote, they have left for the states to take care of more things. She said her dad was doing a lot better, a lot less swelling in the face and she did give me a sort of expense explanation on what moneys have been spent, on what and what more is needed.
I have to sign out for now but will post all these instructions in a few.

lizard lips - 9-12-2011 at 06:27 PM

I just returned from the hospital to see Ron. When I got to his room the nurse asked if I was family and I told her yes and she wanted me to go and check in with the front desk nurse. I evade that and continued to ask her questions about Ron's condition. She immediately went to Ron's bed and suctioned some fluid from Ron's throat and seemed to not want to answer my questions. She was very rude....

Ron is in the same condition as this morning. He is not breathing on his own. His wrists are tied to the steel bed frame and the many IV's are still attached. I can't remember who posted that his condition has improved but this is false. He is in very bad shape as far as I'm concerned. He will not be released in a couple of days. There is no way! He will need a lot of help when he is eventually released and that could be a long time This is very serious. No, I did not speak to a doctor, he was not there for the hour I spent with him. No, I have no medical training but only a miracle will get him out of that place anytime soon. You don't need a doctor to tell me that. I saw it with my own eyes.

I asked the nurse if the doctor had ordered an MRI and if there was a MRI available. She told me that Ron has had a MRI but she evaded the question if there was a MRI at the hospital. After I left ICU I went to the front desk nurses station and questioned them about the MRI and they also evaded the question. They would not confirm if there was one.

Ron did not open his eyes while I was there and the nurse said he was sleeping. I question that as well. I think he is heavily medicated.

I hate to paint a bad picture with this post but it is what it is and it does not look good.

I will return tomorrow morning and check with him again. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I will not make it look better than what it is.

Lizard lips I want you on my side. Thanks for your truthful insight

Roberto - 9-12-2011 at 06:38 PM

From the FWIW department. I asked a Mexican friend of mine from TJ call Sanatorio del Carmen to ask if they have an MRI machine (escaneador de resonancia magnética).

Answer? No. They recommended going to:

Lizard Lips, all the info that we've been posting has been only what has been communicated by Ron's daughter.
She did say that they continued to have Ron heavily sedated because every time they tried to decrease the sedation he would wake up in a frenzy trying to yank out all of the needles and tubes, hence the hands tied?
I can not say what state he is in, I know only what has been shared by Christine. Please do not accuse us as posting falsely, because we are only trying to help keep the people who care in the loop, and keep everyone on the same page...We have no way of knowing if what is told to us by Ron's daughter is true, or, for that matter what is told to her by the doctors...

Roberto - 9-12-2011 at 06:44 PM

All I can say is that if it were me, I would be doing everything in my power to get Ron the heck out of there as fast as possible.

BajaBlanca - 9-12-2011 at 06:47 PM

I am sorry to be reading all this just now after being gone all day BUT, I think it is terrible that Christine (daughter) went home to get funds instead of staying with dad.... we surely could have fronted the cash and dealt with the paying back later .....

lizard lips, your report is insightful. more prayers are really needed. One thing I have learned after many hospitals stays (my own and accompanying Les) is that you have to take it upon yourself to make sure the right thing is happening. too many factors too many patients too much confusion in hospitals to leave the decisions up to them ... Ron needs the best and only the best medical care, so he can continue being the best human he is. Sounds like his condition is quite a bit more serious than Cristina's ???

I totally understand that Christine does not want her dad in the States when his wife is left behind BUT why not take them both north then ??? Does she not have her green card ?? I hope that Cristina is awake/better and able to give some input soon too.

back to my prayers.

JESSE - 9-12-2011 at 06:49 PM

Its in the family's hands now, and they seem to be doing what they feel is best, theres not much we can do. Speculating about his condition is pointless, the daughter is there, she knows exactly whats going on, and she knows better than any of us what to do. All we can do is to offer assitance IF she asks for it.

Accuse? Posting falsely? Yes I did say that this was a false report. I am not pointing fingers at you -- No. Sometimes stories get turned around and I am just correcting it. You heard this from someone else so don't take it personal.

For the third time, I am two hours away and ready to go get him ANYTIME. Can't do it without his daughter's consent.

I think this is a sane and reasonable post. I think Sirena has gone all out to help learn what is going on, and to give helpful messages and information to the family. And now it is in the hands of the people closest to the situation-- Ron's family. Of course we are all pulling for him, and want the best for him, but we may not be the ones best equipped to make that call, and at some point our help turns from aid to meddling.

I see that the BN's here are at it again...helping others in need. What a great group!

Terrible incident that has happened.....not a good thing to read as I just got back into town.

I can offer any assistance that may be required .....including driving down there tomorrow a.m. from Sacramento, Ca. Have truck..can bring in supplies.

I have good Viking blood too (type not known) that is offered.

Though I do not know these BN folks personally...please pass my good wishes to them.

BajaBlanca - 9-12-2011 at 07:18 PM

as far as giving blood is concerned, this might be a good opportunity for those who are close by to go and donate blood, no matter what your type... maybe it can lower the cost of his bill or maybe it can save someone else's life .. but for sure, it will show the power of Baja Nomaders to step up to the plate ! and I think Ron would be all for that !

SiReNiTa - 9-12-2011 at 07:28 PM

Guys...please note the other posts that have said that Christine has gone HOME to the united states, she will not be back until friday!
There are no present family members at this time!

AmoPescar - 9-12-2011 at 07:28 PM

Roberto / Ferna / Lizard Lips / Nomads....

MAYBE IT IS TIME TO BE THERE!!

Might be time for you and several other Nomads to be at the hospital to convince Christina that it is time to get him out of there! Can you and Fernando show up there in the morning? Ferna can call to see when she will be there.

Did anyone ever find out what Cristinas staus is with U.S.?? Does she have a Green card or visa that can get her across the border with Ron?

ALSO...Maybe somebody needs to demand to see the MRI machines...Sure sounds suspicious to me!!!!

Miguel

She won't be back until Friday...Are you kidding me!!!

Maybe it's none of my business....and I don't know her circumstances, BUT what kind of daughter would leave him/her there for 4 days by themselves????

To me that's just NOT acceptable!!!

Ok...I just wanted to let you all know that as of now I'm going to stop posting on this thread...I will continue to assist in any way I can here and if you want the news that I may or may not get feel free to u2u me.
I know that there is no anger directed at me but it really sucks when the news I give only brings out anger in people. Keep positive, keep praying.

Have a nice night everyone.

LancairDriver - 9-12-2011 at 07:52 PM

Very disturbing information coming in. May or may not have an MRI at the hospital? Evasive answers given to that question? Running up a $5,000 bill already. Happens to be about the amount raised here as of yesterday. Need another couple of grand by tomorrow? (about the additional amount last reportedly raised) Presently no end in sight. Hate to say this but they could be calculating the bill following the fund raising on this site. Ron's well being is the highest priority, and I believe more of us are leaning toward getting him across the border asap if it is at all possible.
Sorry to be a skeptic, but it's due to running a business for 25 years. I stand by my pledge for the funds I promised in any case.
And Serinita, you are doing a great job in working with the information given you and many of us appreciate it. Please continue.

AmoPescar - 9-12-2011 at 08:06 PM

Sirenita....

This is in NO WAY any reflection on you and the amazing work you have done in the last couple of days!! Please do not take this personally!

I think it is more frustration directed at the daughter and her decision to keep them there and the frustration from hearing reports from Lizard Lips about his condition, the MRI, etc.

I believe the daughter may be TOO trusting in what the doctors are telling her. She wants to believe that HE/SHE will b fine and apparently it's working. She's gone home for 4 days and left them there, believing that ALL is well until then!

I've done quite a bit myself in the last couple of days. I don't care to have any recognition, that's not why I did it. But, I'm very frustrated in hearing that despite Celia and Dr. Lugos offers of help, it was turned down! Celia is an expert in making that happen and it should have!

Please hang in there. You're one of the level headed ones they need on their side giving good advice!

lizard lips - 9-12-2011 at 08:07 PM

Paula, after I saw your post I was thinking to myself about my "meddling" with this situation and I was going to agree and leave it to the family but as you can see the daughter has more important plans to attend to. I hope I am wrong and she is there to attend to the bills at hand and make attempts to get things right but actually this morning when I walked into Ron's room and he was there by himself hooked up to all that it hit me hard. That was the reason I went back this afternoon and again all by himself. I guess this tough guy has a soft spot and I know if I was in his condition I would want friends to come by.

It also has been confirmed by my sources that there is no MRI at Carmen.

If others can go to the hospital and visit him that would be great.

SiReNiTa - 9-12-2011 at 08:15 PM

FYI those more important plans are her 5 year old son...that's all i'm going to say. Good night and God bless

Paula - 9-12-2011 at 08:41 PM

I don't know you, lizard lips, and I don't know Christine. But I am inclined to think that Ron's family has his best interests at heart, and I do trust that his daughter is doing what she sees as the right thing.

Having been in a round the clock present situation watching a loved one in serious condition, I know that sometimes things look worse than they are, and that caregivers should be trusted. Hospital workers could face serious consequences for giving confidential information to unconfirmed relatives. They face life or death situations everyday, and have a different perspective than those of us watching friends and loved ones going through what are to us extraordinary circumstances.

Non Spanish speakers seem to be mistrusting of care in another culture, and I think some of the doubts about quality of care in Mexico are unfounded. I am not advocating here for Ron staying in the Mexican system or being transported because I don't have the facts, just well intentioned hearsay and opinion.

Along with Sirena, who has no doubt had a horrendous day trying to help in a difficult situation while balancing her everyday responsibilities, I am finished speaking here. I will follow the thread, waiting and hoping for a good outcome. My thoughts and best wishes are with Ron and Cristina now-- may the outcoe for them both be the best.

Sheeeeeeeeesh Guys dont you think its time to take a deep breath. I have read a lot of Rons post on this site and His, on his site I thought he expressed his medical plan quite well, check the thread retired in mexico and what you do for medical. I have noticed on this thread there has been a lot of talk about Ron, Very little about his Wife. On previous threads I have read he has quite the extended family in the local community' apperantly some of then are well conected.
All the support and offers of financhial aid are Fantastic
But as I see it It may be Time to LET GO AND LET GOD.

Lizard...thanks so much for personally going in to be an eye witness...that is what we need...I am very disturbed at the strange turn of events. Sirena's mission today was to touch base with Ron's daughter to discuss options and fill her in and sirena waited for hours at the hospital and finally went home to eat and when Cristina did finally contact her, sirena offered to meet with her but Cristina was in a big hurry to leave...after the doctor said he'd be taking out all the tubes in a short while....this is hard to imagine but perhaps they arent real close...I do understand her concern over her child but whoever is looking after him could maybe do it for a couple more hours at least. Ferna...since you are in personal contact with her, can you update her on what Lizard lips saw and experienced?

I understand that Cristina doesnt have a visa and I believe ron's daughter enquired about getting her an emergency one to accompany ron if he was transferred to the usa...but that didnt work out...plus if ron's daughter is being told he's fine, she wouldnt decide to bother moving him at a tremendous expense...who's gonna pay those bills when all is said and done and we arent talking about a few grand here...so perhaps she was making decisions based on trusting what the doctors told her...which may or may not be wise....but without access to Ron, it's hard to tell what's really going on...sounds like someone needs to investigate this...especially the illedged MRI scam.

sirena asked Cristina if she could leave written permission for someone else on the scene to receive updates while she was in the states and she refused...why?? and why would they lie about having an MRI machine? money scam???

I think that someone should be in the room with Ron at all times...he must feel very alone and it sounds like nobody is with Cristina either...i heard that none of her family was with her...has anyone contacted them? Does anyone here know any of Cristina's family? Cristina will need to have support if they release her soon as well.

I was feeling elated when the daughter Cristina reported all the jolly news of them improving and am now pretty darn frustrated with all the conflicting info...I can only imagine how Sirena must feel as she has put the last two days into helping as much as she possibly can...stressed, tired and confused like the rest of us....sorry honey for dragging you into this but you were my only hope at getting a clearer picture of what was needed to help our buddy.

I certainly hope other nomads who are within a few hours of ensenada will indeed go and spend time at the hospital...make your presence known...I am tempted to call Cristina myself...but maybe Ferna should do it so as not to bombard her with strangers budding in....please call her and let us know the latest Ferna...good night all....hang in there Ron...we love you and will do all we can.
