Very disturbing.

latina - 10-29-2011 at 11:28 AM

One soldier dead, one kidnapper dead and 2 police seriously injured....you know Cabo San Lucas is just too tempting for the Narcos to leave unstained with their filth :(

The real attraction of Cabo to the narcos is the money laundering real estate investment opportunities. All those expensive hotels etc..
I don't see it as a corridor for trafficking....but stranger things have happened.

choyero - 10-29-2011 at 12:07 PM

The original video was pulled, but someone copied it and reposted it here.

Yup. Those billions in US cash dollars need to go somewhere. Hotels, unregulated casinos and real estate development.

choyero - 10-29-2011 at 01:37 PM

There is also a huge domestic drug market in CSL, consisting of both locals and tourists.

Bajahowodd - 10-29-2011 at 01:46 PM

I tend to agree with Dennis on this. If anything, drug kingpins would use this area for investment and laundering. It has been absolutely quiet in the region for quite some time.

And, for the faint of heart, please note that the area where this battle took place is not in the tourist zone, but rather up the hill along the highway that goes to Todos Santos.

That said, I actually did some shopping at Soriana's last week, which is located a mere few blocks from ground zero.

daveB - 10-29-2011 at 02:03 PM

All the bad guys want to build hotels in destinations where nobody goes...the empty rooms will however be shown as full when the books are complete at the end of each day.

More gunfighting NOW / 14:30 hrs.

Correcthor - 10-29-2011 at 02:05 PM

Stay clear of this area:

Gunfight 20 minutes ago with military + bad guys

Plaza Serrano - dont know to write location name exact - general area Sorianas / Prisas Pacifico

choyero - 10-29-2011 at 02:11 PM

The photos I am seeing are in the Sorianas area. I can see sorianas in the background on one of them.

Cypress - 10-29-2011 at 02:12 PM

You're on your own the further you get north of the tourist zone, the pavement ends , the dirt begins. You better be aware!

For sure. The first time I hit the link, it took me to Maggie's, but her blog of the day was about Grover.
Next time I clicked on it, the blog was about Nomad.
Very weird.

If you followed my posts in the "OT" area. You would learn there are certain links from certain posters you should never open.

Maggie is in cohoots with certain Nomad members, and much of what she says is all just an act, although she is truly bi-polar.

Bajahowodd - 10-29-2011 at 03:56 PM

Whatever.

"Over the years, the United States has maintained a bad track record in Mexico and Latin America as an Imperialist promoter of banana republics and a looter of Mexican and Latin American resources."

There is a great deal of truth in this comment. Seems to me that we have wasted our treasure in places such as Viet Nam and the Middle East, while ignoring the sleeping giant that lurks just South of us. Never understood why we have given short shrift to Latin America for so long.

Interestingly, I just read about several muti-national oil companies that are hugely optimistic about finding large reserves of petroleum in Cuba, and its surrounding waters. Anyone care to suggest what the US policy toward Cuba might be, if they hit a gusher?

That said, I'll repeat myself. BCS has been out of the line of fire of the cartel nonsense for years. Even crime, per se, is barely higher than it was before the tourism took a dump Like 1-2% higher than five years ago.. As I recall, there was an American shot and killed in the lobby of the Pueblo Bonito Rose last April. Other than that, crimes have been relatively petty.

Acuity - 10-29-2011 at 07:28 PM

CABO SAN LUCAS, BCS, October 29 .- A left two people dead and three wounded, is up right now, the balance is reported in the shootings that occurred in this marina.

"It is confirmed, killed a Navy Lieutenant and a criminal, three policemen were also wounded ministry, which fortunately are out of danger," said Attorney General of the State, Gamil Arreola Leal.

The Attorney said that was in the first shootout, it was recorded at the edge of 24:00 hours yesterday, in the colony "Las Brisas del Pacifico", extending to the colony "The Deer", which was killed Navy lieutenant and one of the criminals, and two ministerial wounded.

Due to the magnitude of the shooting, members of the armed forces and the judicial police of the State, through loudspeakers asked the residents of such colonies were barricaded in their homes, to remain locked, as it were listening the shots.

There are reviews of yards from home, cars and people slowly returned to normal. Dozens of residents were caught in the crossfire. The evacuation of the area has been ordered. Some residents decided to leave their homes locked and move temporarily to homes of relatives in both low voltage.

At the edge of 13:50 hours today, again there was a significant mobilization of the Mexican Army personnel in the port, due to another shootout, but this time in the colony Arcos del Sol, adjacent to Plaza Sendero .

This confrontation led to personnel of the Armed Forces, Police and Municipal Ministerial, sheltering civilians in the stores that are located in the Plaza Sendero, including Soriana department store, it is surrounded by elements of Mexico's Navy, who made a call, especially to young people to abstain to take photos or videos with their phones.

Even a strong perceived nervousness of the civilian population was in the shops in the Plaza Sendero, which for two hours on closing their doors.

The road to Todos Santos and Aguajito Avenue, just off Plaza Sendero, have been completely closed to vehicular traffic as sporadic explosions are heard.

Later in the Plaza Sendero, Army troops evacuated all purchasers of Coppel stores, Plaza Sendero, Soriana, and those who were inside the premises both commercial and food stalls, for the hold area .

There are some scenes of panic, however, Municipal Civil Protection and rescue teams are sticking to people with mental breakdown.

"There was no hostage-taking, contrary to the armed forces to shield the population," said Gamil Arreola, who reported that there are no reported civilian casualties, "just know that a policeman was wounded with a grazed in the head, without major consequences. "

shari - 10-29-2011 at 08:22 PM

man...yup, that's where I would go...somewhere with low voltage and stick to people with mental breakdown.

seriously, how awful for Los cabos and baja sur and my condolences to the families of the downed warriors.

Right now (Sunday afternoon) the Mexican military is all over colonia Cerro Los Venados doing a house-to-house search. Residents of the colonia have been told to stay indoors and the rest of Cabo has been ordered to stay away. This area is less than one mile from downtown Cabo San Lucas

Never having been to Cabo, how far is this area from the tourist zone?? I'm a little concerned for Jennifer Aniston.

measomsan - 10-30-2011 at 03:39 PM

Having a house in Cabo, many friends that live there all year long I am concerned. I will go down Tuesday and be there two months. Don't really know jennifer, don't think we would hit it off. But if it was your back yard you might think differently.

Our adopted family there were scared last night. But OK. Their kids are fine. I will ask them if jen stopped by...

I hope it does not increase....but it is Mexico

The events that have taken place over the last 48 hours has caused the naive to sit up and take notice. Hopefully they will also pull their heads out of the sand.

We live close to Costco however we have friends that live about four block away from Friday night and Saturday afternoon events. They heard both the AK-47s and loud booms on Friday night but did not hear anything on Saturday (Soriana's parking lot). Today they are driving around the area going about their business like any other Sunday...none of us have heard "the rest of Cabo has been ordered to stay away."

If you are familar with CSL and driving from the bull ring, then the area in question is about two and half miles by car...as the crow flies maybe one and half miles.

Like Shari said "condolences to the families of the downed warriors".

measomsan - 10-30-2011 at 06:01 PM

Pull up your chair and turn the volume up on your computer and you will hear something at Soriana's parking lot.

Hearing info is always good. Sometimes out where we are we may not get memo for a day or so!

Watched a video earlier today that showed Military soldiers taking shelter by the pumps in the PeMex at Soriana's. You can hear the guns shots in the back ground.

Bajahowodd - 10-31-2011 at 04:35 PM

This incident occurred uphill from the tourist area. Perhaps small solace to the faint of heart. But, as has been noted in this thread earlier, BCS, and Cabo have been somewhat immune to the violence that wracks some mainland areas.

Cabo officials were actually gloating about their recent record of safety and harmony.

I'm guessing that this one incident alone will not trash the tourism industry. But, similar to Acapulco, a couple more of these incident will make Cabo toast. I hope that doesn't happen.

Funny thing is that my own personal laziness found me in the WalMart in Cabo recently, where I was put upon by a plethora of time share pimps, who jump you when you walk in the door. (can you believe that these guys implre you that you MUST tell them where you are staying!) WalMart actually receives payment from their company to allow them to harass the customers. Before I flipped off one of these guys, and walked away, I mentioned that I usually shop at Soriana, a company that does not allow these pimps in the door. His reply to me was that they didn't need to hang in Soriana simply because the vast majority of the tourists shop at WalMart and Costco.

I was at that Soriana five days prior to this mess.

How about this: .......

NEW ORLEANS: 15 shot, 2 dead in Halloween shootings...

Cabo still sounds pretty safe!

Bajahowodd - 11-1-2011 at 03:59 PM

Sadly, it's about perception. My take on what happened in Brisas last weekend could actually be encouraging, in that unlike bodies hung from overpasses, or bodies heaped on the main drag, as witnessed elsewhere in Mexico, this appeared to be a pro-active move by authorities.

For those who don't know, Mexico has been actively pursuing the vote to be host of the G20 summit next year. They have already broken ground on what is to be a huge convention facility in the Cabo Real development between San Lucas and San Jose.

Incident such as the one over the weekend don't tend to support Mexico's bid.

slimshady - 11-1-2011 at 09:27 PM

Looks like they are putting the hammer to these guys. Heard they hooked up some druggies in Los Barriles who were users as well as some sellers.

JAG0000 - 11-2-2011 at 01:31 PM

As a publisher and resident of Cabo San Lucas I felt it necessary to write a publisher's note concerning this last weeks violence... I live just 8 blocks from this area and while not many tourist go there...all must be safe no matter who there are or where they come from... but please be sure to try and get the facts and not just repeat rumors and hype as many have done... You may read my note here http://tinyurl.com/3uys9wo

I appreciate all comments good or bad as while i personally don't any less safe these days here and believe that at this time tourist and most residents are safe I'm always open to others opinions as I have found here...Thank you and have a great day, James

Welcome to Nomad, James.
Ya know what, James? We get real sick and tired of being told how we should interpret news of the day. Vicariously, we have lived, relived and suffered so much mayhem in Mexico that I believe it gives us a clear idea of how far we can stretch our imaginations and still stay within the limits of the facts around a story.
We speculate...we project...and sometimes we just plain guess, but that's just how we see our adopted country being torn to hell and the discussion helps us to learn and process all the crap.
Soooo...James, if you don't mind, keep your news absorbtion lessons to yourself, or, better yet, preach it to the hotel guests down there. Do that while you can, 'cause after a few more gunfights, there may not be anyone left to tell that Cabo is safe.

desertcpl - 11-2-2011 at 02:42 PM

I really don't give a flying "F" how many of those low life pieces of doo-doo kill each other. But at least give me a chance to defend myself. Let tourists carry a personal weapon for self defense. Check it in at the border and check it out on exit. If you shoot yourself in the foot you're on your own.:D

I do appreciate what you say and was not preaching to those that live here..in fact I don't like to tell people what to do at all; but our webzine is read all over the world and it was for those that are not living here in Mexico that I made those commnets... Some of the world media was saying a lot more people were hurt, killed and that the people in the mall were held hostage by gunmen...maybe indirectly but it was the police and army that kept them inside for hours till they could control the situation and safely let them leave.

I also agree that if this continues, Cabo will not be safe and there will be no tourists...that is a sad but ture fact.

Thnak you for your time in responding to my post and have a great day!
