CROOKED CATAVINA COPS

Capt. George - 11-11-2004 at 06:51 AM

Has anyone gotten any new word on the rip off artists in Catavina? Also is it permissable for a local cop in Catavina to write a ticket on Mex. 1? Thought ony PFP could write tags on that road??

Been through there a couple times, have not seen them, I go through no more them 30KPH.....Any news out there.

ONLY Policia Federal Preventiva (PFP) can give tickets there, anybody else doing this is violating the law.

I am sure the PFP would love to hear from you if you got ticketed by anyone other than them.

Go for it.

So how do you handle it when pulled over?

This has worked for me the last few times. When I get pulled over for being Gringo I never let on that I speak Spanish. This oftem makes it more difficult for the cop to make his point. I do not let him intimidate me. I calmly tell him that I have done nothing wrong and disagree politely when he tells me that I did whatever made up infraction he aludes to. I listen to him go on and on about the "problema" and just keep looking him in the eye with a blank look. If he says we have to go to the station, I say sure, no problem because I have all the time in the world. It would be rare that he would want you to really follow him since he wouldn't get any money out of you at the station. And if you do have to pay, it will be less at the station. Mexico fines are very low by US standards. I NEVER offer any money on the spot. Once they figure out that they can't intimidate you, they lose interest and try to snag the next chump. Now, if I've been going 85 MPH on the highway and the patrol pulls me over, I would expect to get a ticket and have to pay a fine. I've never been pulled over for a ligitimate infraction, so I'm no expert on that. BTW, the best practice is to pull over where there are other people like at a roadside restaurant, llantera etc. instead of in the middle of nowhere...that goes for CHP in USA too!

I HAVE been pulled over for a legitimate infraction, speeding. I was full prepared to pay the price.

.....I saw a post on a fairly prominent Baja website that was claiming that the section of hwy through Catavina proper is one of those sections that are not controlled by the SCT. So, it may be possible that the local cops might have jurisdiction over that area and could write tickets.

I believe I saw the SUV with the light bar in question when I passed thru T-giving week. BTW, how long has that temporary police substation been there on the east side of the hwy? That's where the SUV was parked.
