Gray whale observed off coast of Africa, a 1st in known history

Whale-ista - 5-15-2013 at 08:30 AM

Now this is what I call a migration.

Wow! very interesting, Thanks

durrelllrobert - 5-15-2013 at 09:17 AM

They only swim counterclockwise down there.

CortezBlue - 5-15-2013 at 09:20 AM

And, of course, it is being blamed on climate change

I'm surprised you're not blaming Obama:lol:

CortezBlue - 5-15-2013 at 10:55 AM

I don't think the whale was close to Kenya, or should it be Hawaii or Indonesia......

Actually, climate change is likely the culprit---its allowed enough of the polar ice to melt so the whales can navigate the northwest passage. You can decide whether WE are the culprits for causing it but the fact is there is less ice. A gray whale was also sighted off of Israel not too long ago. Gray whales used to have large populations in the Atlantic but we killed them all off by the 1800s.

Whale-ista - 5-15-2013 at 05:32 PM

These whales are born in Mexico, so Maybe they're just tired of waiting for immigration reform in the United States And are heading for Europe and points beyond.

You can keep drinking the Kool Aid, but I prefer the real reason, the protection of the species has allowed them to proliferate and re-discover some of their "original" routes used many years in the past before they were hunted into near extinction.

Mexitron - 5-15-2013 at 09:17 PM

Kool-Aid? Real reason? Are you saying there is not less ice? Prove it.

Mexitron - 5-15-2013 at 09:24 PM

By the way, interestingly enough, the Antarctic Caps are expanding and have been for the last 30 years.

Foxnews??? Maybe more water to help our whales navigate.

Thanks Steve!

Since the Arctic has been loosing ice and the Antarctic has been gaining ice... then isn't that show earth is in balance? No net loss or gain of ice... or maybe more ice than before since the Antarctic is many times bigger than the Arctic!??:O
It was in the 70's that 'a consensus of scientists' said we were heading towards a new ice age! That didn't scare enough people to hand over money and change fast enough... so let's try global warming, instead!

Geologic history proves the earth has been warming and cooling, over and over, long before fossil fuels were burned... long before. Using 'climate fear' to gain a political move over our lives is a tool of tyrants. Nothing wrong with discovering cleaner ways to live and work, but to say man is guilty of changing earth's climate when it has been changing regularly without man, is disrespectful to our intelligence.

Wasn't there a thread about a gray in Africa about a year ago ??

If I recall it's even named

As always, your posts are informative and reasonable. I didn't know of the history of these animals nor what controls their current migration paths. I, for one, thought they 'belonged' off the west coast of N America. Thanks.

BTW, I think Mulegena should be informed. Her whale off the coast Kamchatka could be anywhere by now.

This thread could veer off into the usual diatribe between political foes. I hope not.

Mexitron - 5-16-2013 at 12:05 PM

Actually I wasn't trying to veer into politics---as David says climate does change quite a bit through history though the last 10,000 years have been relatively benign. There is less pack ice so the climate has changed up there, simple as that, and the whales have a better chance of making the Northwest Passage. It might go back to being a regular pack ice next year, who knows?!

disrespectful? :lol::lol:

i think anyone that disputes scientific results simply because they don't like the results is a bonehead!

the whales are way smarter than the climate change deniers!

Bajaboy - 5-16-2013 at 12:58 PM

sad that we turn to NOAA for info on hurricanes but then claim they are making up climate change....

Actually if you do some research on the web, there are some articles that believe that there were Grays, in the whale type, not he alien type, that were in that area. It is thought they were hunted out and are now starting to move into those areas.

Well since many of the scientists published misleading and false information, it kind of makes sense, don't you think?

You might give this a watch:

It might give you some perspective as to how many scientists back climate change versus those that do not....

I did. It's a great synopsis of where we are and how we got there. The comparison made between the strategies of Great Tobacco and Climate Change Debunkers was thought provoking and revealing.

My son, Alex, will be spending 8 weeks as a summer intern measuring properties of glaciers in an ice field east of Juneau that has been under study since 1946. Needless to say, I am jealous. Hopefully he will return with an understanding of how real science is done and be able to tell when people are feeding you false information. There may even be some conclusions about the affects of climate change in that part of the world.

That was a good program.

Gees Igor, can't you just sneak away and join Alex? What a GREAT opportunity for Alex and I sure hope you will share what he learns from being there.

excellent Igor. What a great opportunity!

Be careful. Some on this board think that education is the root of all evil.

If one grey can go on a walkabout and cause a disscusion about climate change. It is good for the left or wrong.

Hey Blue,

So what did you think? I'm curious as to your response:?: You did watch it:light:
