Mexicali

noshoes - 2-22-2014 at 09:38 PM

I tried a search, and didn't find much beyond good chinese food, so am trying a post. Any body know much about Mexicali? Lot's of folks pass thru, but has anyone spent any time there? I'm thinking of a long weekend, moteling it, and just checkin the place out. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've stayed at the Crown Plaza but only because I had to.

I wouldn't say that Mexicali is the entertainment center of Baja Norte.

I think I would go to Tecate over Mexicali

Just my 2 pesos

Thanks for the bumped DR post, but I'm not interested in bar hopping. Anybody ever visit the museos? Or cultural center? Zoo?

This is a great choice down there. Plenty of parking too.

Restaurant Dragon
Chinese Restaurant
Centro Comercial Dragon (Blvd Benito Juarez), Mexicali, Baja California

Lots of choices in the old section of town as well......but do the Dragon :-)

it's prolly a good thing you're not a clubber; I have a good friend who's from there, and there's lots of naughty bad folk to make nights a little scary for a tourista. Especially now El Chapo got P-nched, that's not gonna slow down the drug trade. All it's going to do is stir up the stank a little, so i wouldn't be 'roaming' after dark, but it wouldn't stop me from seeking the 'Big Shows of the Big City' if that were my thang (personally i'd want a beach and a beer, nothing more, nothing less). Let us know how it fared, and anything you found of interest.

Well it's looking like I'm just gonna pass thru Mexicali this time. There's an off road race down in San Felipe and a friend offered a place to stay. Hard to refuse free housing. May try the Dragon restaurant on the way back. Thanks all that replied.

The Zoo is worth seeing but know it is not the San Diego Zoo, they have a Teatro Del Estado (easy to find on internet) that has events worth seeing, lots of places like Mandalino's Italian on Reform and several other dancing and eating places there, a number Chinese Restaurants along Madera, at the end of Reform where the Forum use to be is a new place called Palamino's Restaurant great food, guitar & singers on weekends really a nice place and all kinds of places down Justo Sierra two large shopping malls with lots of stuff inside. Laguna Azul 823 Independence is the best for seafood and not expensive with all of the taxis knowing where it is at.

Now, of course for those wanting the twirling dancers they are on Reforma but down towards the very end with about 6 different gentlemens clubs, which t some of you gentlemen nomads like to go to in order to improve your eye sight!! LOL

The City Express in Mexicali on Blvd. Benito Juarez 1342 about $60 with breakfast, a nice one for about $97 dollars a night is Lucerna at Blvd Benito Juarez 2151 really nice rooms, pool and great bar and restaurant. On the internet you can find all the kinds of hotels you want and they all know what is going on for you in Mexicali. We drive in Mexicali day and night, however we know it. We have not had any problems especially with the police since about 20 years ago. Fun place but not in the SUMMER!! LOL Take Care & Travel Safe----"No Hurry, No Worry, Just FUN" bajafun777

Thanks for that link! I just watched the Bahia de los Angeles episode, which near the end, featured Mama Espinoza's Restaurant in El Rosario... I had to laugh when the host asked Mama how old she was, and her reply was "They say I am 110"! (per her autobiography, that birthday will be in October, 2018).

Or my favorite
