Favorite Tequilas under $50

woody with a view - 4-10-2014 at 12:24 PM

Wondering about some names that would be fairly easily available at Algodones in particular. A co worker will be going back and forth for dental work for 5 days = 5 different tequilas to stock the shelf with. Our favorite is Corralejo Blue, San Matias, Patron Silver and Sauza Anejo-Commemerativo in no particular order. Always willing to try a new flavor! Not interested in a mixer....

For me, it's a slam dunk. Don Julio reposado. Occasionally goes on sale for around 330 pesos. Excellent 25 dollar tequila.

monoloco - 4-10-2014 at 01:00 PM

Cazadores. Less than 200 pesos a liter.

blackwolfmt - 4-10-2014 at 01:01 PM

being as where I live patron & HD are over 65.00$ I am limited to a 22.00$ bottle Sauza blanco which IMO is great for the price and they always have it.

Hook - 4-10-2014 at 01:04 PM

I'm also a big fan of Don Julio 70th anniversary silver. Far and away the best silver I have had..........but I have never really done any sipping of silvers.

EDIT: I think I pay around 440 pesos for this down here, so maybe this does not qualify.

Hook, couldn't agree more! The DJ70 is the smoothest tequila I've had under $75. Paid 525 pesos in Los Barriles, but stateside it's around $70 at Bevmo or Total Wine & Spirits.

elgatoloco - 4-10-2014 at 02:15 PM

Gran Ceñtenario Añejo

Bob53 - 4-10-2014 at 03:15 PM

Don Julio hands down! Haven't tried the DJ70. But I will very soon.

ok...my hat in the ring....a couple years ago we stopped into the "liquor barn" in redding for the first time on our way north/south....oh my!...the choices!!!....so we loaded up on our favorite,(at the time), hornitos sauza....when we got to the register the fellow behind asked if we had ever tried camarena tequila....nope, was the answer..but we are open minded so sent him back for a bottle....a third the price of julio and as smooth as silk...WE. ARE. TEQUILA. DRINKERS. ...and camarena is as good as it gets...lemme know what you think....wooo boy!

Ok that was back ass ..DJ 70ty. Guess I got excited

Sweetwater - 4-10-2014 at 05:00 PM

OK, I like all those tequilas but ....... there's always a butt......

My understanding is that you can bring 1 liter of liquor across the border, duty free, per MONTH, into AZ.

So I've always declared 1 liter of tequila and had my companions each take another liter for me. Above that 1 liter per month, I understand you have to pay duty although I have not had to deal with that nor have any idea what it costs.

YMMV?

Ice cold shots of El Capricio with a wedge of lime, salt optional.

Pompano - 4-11-2014 at 12:43 PM

Another vote for Don Julio for just everyday sipping..

A good 'cheap' tequila is Piedra Azul Reposado, which
has well-balanced vanilla and caramel flavors, and a 'best buy' at about $18 a bottle.

$50 is a little high for me. I'm usually around $30. Espolon and Kirkland are both good in that price range.

htnfool - 4-12-2014 at 07:31 AM

I luv Don julio anejo. It goes about 480-760 the further south you go from mulege. Will have to find me a bottle of that DJ70 stuff.

luv all the replies, Mmmm yummy

No thanks. I'd rather use my taste buds.

bajachris - 4-13-2014 at 02:30 PM

Cheapest place to buy Tequilla is the Smart and Final in Ensenada.

bajaandy - 4-13-2014 at 02:57 PM

In no specific order:
Espolon Blanco
Gran Centenario Anjeo (my usual go-to brand)
Reserva Del Dueno (but not available any more)
Patron Anjeo
Kirkland
Milagro Silver
And I just drank a bottle of Siete Leguas Blanco (but my son bought if for me, so I don't know how much it cost)

willardguy - 4-13-2014 at 03:17 PM

a couple folks mentioned kirkland tequila, i've never tried it but im sure its a fine tequila. I just found this review comical!

Presentation: As you would expect, Kirkland Signature brand Tequila comes in a monolithic glass structure. When full, it weighs roughly fifteen pounds. The glass is incredibly thick, which results in some wonky weight distribution. This makes pouring out of the needlessly massive spout difficult, especially if you like to drink out of normal-sized things. The decal on the bottle is what we can only assume to be an agave plant, but looks more like an upside-down octopus. The best part is that the bottom of the bottle is made of clear blue glass, so if you shine a light underneath it, the bottle turns a deep blue color. It’s awesome. Price: $18.95 for 1.75 liters History: In 2006, the body of an escaped convict was found floating in the runoff pool behind Kirkland factory located forty miles south of the Mexican-American border. Once the decomposing corpse was fished from the clear liquid, a supervisor demanded the pool’s chemical makeup be determined. “It’s tequila. My god, it’s tequila,” he muttered under his breath a week later, holding the lab report in his hand. “Someone get me Corporate.” The factory runoff was then siphoned into the remains of Kirkland’s ill-fated attempt to market glass coffins for babies, and sold at Costco locations worldwide. Taste Breakdown: Aroma: Salty dirt. Initial Taste: Dirty salt. Body: Thick, hearty, and warm. Like a Jersey Shore tide-pool. Finish: Feels like gasoline but tastes like salty dirt. When you throw it up, it tastes like stomach acid. Compare With: Any other cheap tequila. Effects: Similar drunk to that of a high-gravity forty. Users are likely to be ejected from a bar for punching out a bathroom mirror. The hangover is an intense headache with lasting nausea and heart palpitations. Remember to drink plenty of water—the tequila appears to be primarily made out of snow salt interstate runoff, so it is very dehydrating. Who Should Buy It? - People that only shop at Costco. - People who like to collect dumb bottles. - People who like to buy things that are ridiculous. - Nobody. Testimonials: “It isn’t really that bad” – Adam, Banker “After a long day at the factory, I like to unwind with a nice cool glass of Kirkland Signature Tequila. Then I punch my kids.” – John, Factory Worker “A year ago I was at Costco and thought I’d try their Kirkland brand tequila. When I got home, the bottle accidentally slipped out of my hand and landed on the dog. It snapped her back like a twig. My four-year-old daughter was watching.” Erin, TV Personality “If it’s cheap, I’ll drink it. I’m not a pussy.” – Bill, student. Goes Great With: Kirkland brand chocolate chip cookies, Kirkland brand ice cream sandwiches, Kirkland brand signature vodka, Kirkland brand Pizza, Kirkland brand salt. Literally anything Kirkland makes, which is everything. Doesn’t Go Great With: Tomato soup, laundry detergent, the movie Antz. Conclusion: As someone who knows nothing about tequila or alcohol in general, we feel qualified to say Kirkland brand Tequila is any Cinco de Mayo party’s worst nightmare. Unless one of the party activities involves the guests bludgeoning each other to death with indestructible weapons made of glass and cork. In that case, it is a Cinco de Mayo must-buy. Grade: F+ (the bottle's pretty cool.)

El Jimador Añejo is very smooth, and definitely under $50. One caveat is that it's not 100% Agave, but for me it's a very nice sipping tequila.

their reposado is 100% agave, their anejo isn't??????

Ateo - 4-13-2014 at 04:18 PM

That Kirkland stuff is good. My neighbor is a tequila freak and even he says it's good stuff.

I'll go with Patron.

Although I rarely splurge and stick with my good ol' buddy - El Jimador.

If I'm at my mother in laws, then it Cazadores.

Udo - 4-13-2014 at 05:28 PM

El Charro.
Either vintage is great as long as you add some lime juice to the booze.

elgatoloco - 4-13-2014 at 05:53 PM

Was at Hi-Time Wine Cellars in Costa Mesa this weekend. Picked up a bottle of Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal. While I was there I noticed that Gran Ceñtenario Añejo was on sale for $27.99 ($59.99). I also notice that it is about the same at Bevmo currently. In the not too distant past it was going for $65.00 there. I did not buy any because I have plenty of it but................

I looked for the DJ70 but they did not have any in stock. They get $53.99 for 750ml when they do.

$54 for DJ70 NOB seems better than average. So far for me Fayla in Los Barriles is the best buy at $525 pesos= +-$42, depending on the exchange of the day.

Martyman - 4-14-2014 at 10:48 AM

Jimador is not as good as it used to be. I won't drink it...unless offered.

Kirkland Blanco was a great surprise! We all liked it. And for about $19 its a no brainer

$19? It's 169 pesos for 1.5 liters in Cabo San Lucas.

1.5 liter packaging for tequila seems kind of odd doesn't it? but check this out, 950ml bottles have pretty much taken over the one liter bottle, but after reading some of the good prices on gran centenario anejo I thought i'd check prices at don pisto in rosarito. 307 peso's but a closer look at the bottle, 695ml! WTF :?:

daveB - 4-17-2014 at 11:34 AM

A bottle per month at Los Algodonas, if going north with it.
Hueradura is a brand I stick with, having had the tour (just east of Tequila.) El Jimador is from there, a lower priced tequila, sold with a built-in charitable contribution if memory serves. The tour was great.

flyguy - 4-17-2014 at 03:24 PM

Many have said its not "mexican" but i have yet to find a Tequila i enjoy more than Cabo Wabo Anjeo, we had a tequila night where everyone brought a different one and everyone liked the Cabo the most, its got a smokey flavour.

pauldavidmena - 4-17-2014 at 03:25 PM

Both Tequila.net (which may or may not be up-to-date) and Jimador's own website claim that it is 100% Blue Agave (http://www.eljimador.com/node/42), although I've read that's no longer the case. Does anyone know for sure? It's reasonably priced, and not too hard to find up here in New England.

daveB - 4-17-2014 at 04:02 PM

el Jimador is 100 percent agave, produced in the heart of blue agave country, by Casa Heradura. There would be no reason for anything but blue agave to be used, they are in the thick of it, the hills around Amatitan are nothing but bue!

I think you're correct, for awhile they did turn it into a mixto.

As reported by Morris Thompson (Knight Ridder News Service, Feb. 7, 2001), the previous agave shortage encouraged many producers to change some of their brands from 100% to mixto, including one brand previously popular among Mexicans:
"Ramon Valdes, president of Tequila Herradura, S.A. de C.V., Mexico's second-oldest commercial tequila distiller, is not happy. His firm came in for criticism recently after a reporter noticed that the label on its El Jimador brand now says just 'tequila.' It used to be 100% agave.

"Valdes says his company made the change in El Jimador's formula last May. Otherwise, he said, his firm would have had to double El Jimador's price, about $13 a bottle in Mexico, because agave prices have risen 3,000% since 1995. That's when U.S. demand started to surge, and just as it did, a freeze and disease cut agave crops sharply.

In the big box stores in Mexico lot's of Tequilas are sold in 1l and 1.5l bottles. The Kirkland plata is also 40º alcohol so it's a good bang for the buck.

blackwolfmt - 4-17-2014 at 05:10 PM

Well after reading opinions here I had to order me a bottle of El Jimador blanco
42$ wanted anejo but they cant get it I just finished a HD silver couple months back so i look forward to a great taste test between the 2 blanco's

No mention of Chamucos Reposado its usually right around $50.00 brown label with the dancing devils on the sides, it sometimes is packaged in a brown cardboard type box. Excellent stuff one of my top favorites.

The Mision del Siglio XXI is available here in Loreto for about $ 8.00 a liter at 70 proof.

Very palatable at that price and 100% agave.

55steve - 4-19-2014 at 05:31 PM

I currently have these in my man cave - Corralejo Reposado, Patron Silver, Milagro Reposado, Centenario Reposado and a few other 'mixing' brands. We have family visiting from the UK, Bulgaria & Lake Havasu at the moment so the supply is certainly taking a hit.

My go-to Tequila is Correlejo, preferably out of the freezer.

Martyman - 4-21-2014 at 10:49 AM

I like correlejo but those damn tall bottles!!! I know I'm not the only one to tip it over and break it. Talk about a grown man crying.
