Highway 1 construction update (early April)

The long detours and construction south of Santo Thomas have been completed and the road is in great shape. Most of the painting has been finished but a few sections are still unstriped. The billboards describing how much money is being spent on the projects now proudly state "completed."

Some much-needed repairs are being done south of El Rosario/North of Catavina. The detours here are shorter. Lots of potholes in this area.

I saw construction crews working on the water crossing South of Catavina while heading south last week. It's been in pretty bad shape recently. They repaired some of the worst water damage.

When I drove back north April 6 there was no sign of additional work, but it was a Sunday so maybe they were taking the day off.

There is now 26 miles of pavement from San Ignacio heading out to the lagoon. The pavement goes as far as the mud flats on the eastern edge of the lagoon.

Rumor is a new contractor with larger equipment is taking over for the final stretch thru the mud which will require more engineering apparently.

Be careful while driving through the mud flats along that section. There are some cones but The detours are not well marked in some places. At one point you need to drop off the elevated section for a short detour around construction.

It's interesting to drive on these detours alongside the new road bed they're putting in and see how much material is required to raise the elevation.
