Gas cans

Most of us that hit the back roads and trails take additional gasoline in some kind of container.

My experiance with fuel containers follows:

I recently had a fire that destroyed a storage shed at my place. In the shed were a number of steel gasoline (Jeep) cans as well as a number of plastic ones. We all know that the steel ones will rust sometimes contaminating our fuel and the plastic won't. So lots of us have switched to the plastic.

In the fire, NONE of the steel ones exploded. They were empty (but empty still might have a cup inside) They bulged but as I picked them up to take to the dump, I could hear the little bit slosh inside. Of course, all the plastic either exploded or burned releasing the fumes and tiny bit of gas to help fan the flames. This was a hot fire, 2 VW engine blocks, 6 VW transmissions, as well as a ton of other stored stuff. Right beside the steel cans were about 30 VW cylinder heads which melted into a couple of big globs.

As a result of this fire, I believe my fuel storage and transport containers will all be steel in the future.

I can only report what happened here. I hauled 8, now round, steel cans to the dump along with the transmission gears.

By golly, Hose A, we shre did miss an opertunity. With about 25 tires burning, we had plenty of smoke.

Try the NATO style Wedco cans...much better than the US models.
