The Shack in La Paz

Lengua - 5-3-2014 at 08:49 PM

The new location along the Malecon is superb and the Modelo Negro in a cold mug was outstanding.

Our family frequents La Paz every year. Two years ago we visited the Shack at its old location next to Baja Marks.
It was over the top with made to order burgers and attentive waitresses.

This past spring we visited the Shack at its new location on the Malecon. It is a great new location with improved ambiance and setting. We also were able to enjoy a cool breeze that was welcome relief to sunburned faces.

I am not sure what was going on but this time around the burgers were overcooked ,lacked flavor and took approximately an hour to get to our table. The service was absolutely terrible. I am hoping tha this was a just a bad night because the guy that owns the joint has some great menu ideas and has prepared great BBQ in the past.

Well, we were just there tonight and the salad was good, my chili burger was just too spicy for me and the food easily took 45 minutes to arrive. The new location is beautiful.

My margarita was excellent! Les's draft Negra Modela was too.

The new location is by the mermaid which is near the pier at the end of the malecon

Love the new spot

Next Saturday May 10- very. special. music.

Los Ateos del Ritmo, the trio of gypsy-style musicians who were in Mulege last month will be playing next week at... The Shack!

Blanca, you're so gonna wanna go hear 'em and tell the kids to come, too. Everybody's gonna love this music!

The Shack's disorganized chaos leads to inconsistent experiences. It's a roll of the dice. Lately a seven is an unusual come out roll.

sounds to me like travis needs a bigger kitchen!

weebray - 5-5-2014 at 03:15 PM

Travis is mia. A bigger kitchen is not the first place they need to start.

Maybe it's just me. But I did not see a word of Spanish anywhere. Catering to gringos is likely a good business plan. However, when we travel in Mexico, we try to find places that do not. After all, we're in a foreign country. I would not eat at KFC in Cairo.

" I would not eat at KFC in Cairo."

I bet you would if you ate Egyptian food every day of your life! same thing here. ;)

Personally I like the Shack, Overall the food is good but the servings are a little big for me. I think Travis is no longer there and Rosie has to look after everything including getting two children off to school etc.. keeping perfect control over food quality etc is very hard . But overall a very good product is served. The Beer is very cold and the company can't be beat. When I've been there I have seen a nice mix of Gringos and locals, plus Mexican tourists.
If you are critical have the courage to politely tell Rosie your concerns so she can address them

Yup, thats the problem , No Travis . I recall when Travis was running the front of the house with one other and Rosie was working the kitchen .
we expressed our concern to Rosie upon leaving the resturant that night toa shrug of the shoulders..

Fair enough then.

Bummer to hear about your displeasure with the Shack. They have definitely had a challenging year.
They've still got the best happy hour deal in town though...

That's funny because I was in Cabo when a hurricane destroyed alot of the town and the only place left open to eat was the KFC. Ate there alot for a few days.

Matter of fact, I've visited Cairo twice. Their cuisine is very Mediterranean. Many people of Greek origin live in Northern Egypt.

About the KFC reference, we were just outside of Cairo, visiting the pyramids and the sphinx. If you stand directly in front of the sphinx and turn around to see just what the sphinx is looking at, you will see a KFC right across the street.

Sorry to hear the reports of The Shack food being inconsistent and them having a challenging year. We have always had great delicious burgers there. In fact, I could never bring myself to try anything else on the menu because the burgers were so good. And Travis and Rosie appeared to be 2 of the most hard-working people around.

That said, I'm not a fan of the new location - I know, I know, I'm in the minority with that opinion, but I like their previous location better. I understand the malecon location has a better view and more walk-by customers, but the front area where you have a view of the bay is cramped and not big enough. They need more space!

I also prefer the old location. BTW the old location is open as "Fuego y Leno" and serves up a great pizza and good burger. Run by an also hard working Italian couple.
