best snorkeling places?

moseattle - 12-17-2004 at 07:38 PM

Hi

I'm planning a trip to go kayaking and snorkeling in Baja. My friend and I will be travelling between Loreto and La Paz. Where near those places or in between are the best places to go snorkeling? We'll be there in late March.

Thanks for your advice!

In La Paz I would head out to Tecolote in the morning before wind picks up and go to the right up the beach as far as you can safely drive and jump in the water. Also look at Bahia Balandra depending on the tide. You can drive there easily. If you are real ambitious you can hire a panga to take you across the channel to Isla Espiritu Santo for a snorkel. Just past the ferry terminal at Pichilingue there is a BIG palapa on the beach, Resturante Playa Pichilingue. Great place to sit and enjoy the view and the seafood after some water fun or at sunset.

Loreto area I would try the area by Ligui or maybe the stretch between there and Puerto Escondido. We usually head for Requeson and Coyote at Concepcion especially for paddling and snorkel. It is further north from Loreto but worth the trip.

Puerto Escondido

There is actually a lot of sea life in the port, especially along the rocks towards the entrance to the jetty (by the old pier).Easy access if you don't have a boat to get to the islands.

From Loreto we were SCUBA diving off of the SE side of Isla Coronado.
It would be great for snorkeling and is a small island close enough to the mainland to kayak to, but remote enough to have great sealife.

They also have a nice stretch of white sand beach on the South side where we ate lunch, but the best snorkeling is on the SE and E sides where there are large rock formations (possibly Basalt if I recall someone saying that correctly)

Go down to the main boardwalk in front of the Los arcos hotel and look for Eduardo from Eduardos tours. He is the La Paz connection for anything you need. He is my partner in La Paz.

You can e mail him at eduardosviajes@hotmail.com

He can get you to the best snorkeling in La Paz!

Definitely a great way to spend a day in Baja is to take a boat (along with your cooler) out to Isla Espiritu Santo, Isla Partida and Los Isolotes.

Snorkel with the sea lions at Los Isolotes, and swim through the arch there. Then spend some time on one of the white-sand beaches of Isla Partida on the way back in. The west-side of the islands have great white-sand beaches with few visitors.

Need to leave early enough that you don't get caught trying to come back in during the afternoon Coromuel winds, especially if you're in a smaller boat/panga.

As mentioned, you should be able to hire a boat out at Playa Tecolote.
