Mulege 7:15 a.m. Monday the 15th

Fatigue finally took me over and I slept at 4 to be awakened by white light flashing through the windows and closed eyelids and nearby rumbling.

The advancing fingers of the storm are here.

chivatojoe - 9-15-2014 at 06:31 AM

Thanks for posting the time stamp in your reports.
keeps thing real time.
Here's hoping Mulege can stay a float

Cappy - 9-15-2014 at 06:43 AM

40 miles west of LaPaz. That puts it right over todos santos. Our prayers are with all

Russ - 9-15-2014 at 06:44 AM

Time stamps are on all postings top right of each
Mine show an hour early but I can change that in the control panel.

wakemall - 9-15-2014 at 07:19 AM

Let hope the mountains reduce the storms strength before Loreto and Mulege! There still probably going to get a lot of rain.

azucena - 9-15-2014 at 07:19 AM

Looks like the airport suffered major damage. I hope no one was injured anywhere. Any news from Pulmo, Frailles areas?

chivatojoe - 9-15-2014 at 07:25 AM

Which airport ?

Buena Vista update: Just looked outside after a very long night of sopping up water, it's a mess out there. Still windy and raining but not bad, maybe I'll venture out after I have a cup of coffee....and mop up some more water...

capitolkat - 9-15-2014 at 08:28 AM

I have a home in La Paz and just happen to be away -but will return next week, and don't like the ominous silence from La Paz posters. Anybody???

Mula - 9-15-2014 at 08:31 AM

Power and phones went out at 6:30am in Lopez Mateos.

We are up and running now with our generator.
Still blowing and raining here.

Another one

I called La Paz and spoke with my Cunado. He said that this Cat 3 had much stronger winds then the last Cat 3 but with less rain. Cell and electricity is down and still with heavy winds. He is going to wait until later before venturing out. We have a home near the end of the malecon going to Costa Baja in the hills above 'Breeze Mart'. On our street, about 7 medium trees were uprooted...

Looking over the city, he says that there are trees and power lines down everywhere. I would expect power to be out for sometime.....

Our homes came through with no damage except some water entering but not sure about our yacht in Costa Baja....

Will report later with new news if any..

Hope all safe and sound!

What are they calling this second hurricane coming towards Baja? I'm unable to find it on the net but i'm hearing multiple reports of it.

EngineerMike - 9-15-2014 at 09:26 AM

Power is going to be seriously spotty w/downed lines everywhere at least thru southern Baja. Ditto phone land lines at least, but TelMex will be up & running dial tone service fairly quickly if history serves as indicator. CFE will take time, especially on this one, to get trans wires up as they will be way spread out.

If you have a friend w/a land line, and are heading down or know someone who is, try to find a phone that operates only off the telephone wall jack (RJ11 wall jack only, doesn't require a 120V outlet). Those old style phones are getting harder to find, but thrift shops have them. I gave one to Saul for use after hurricanes, hopefully he still has it and keeps it dry. After Jimena there was one phone in Mulege for about 2 days, then somebody scared one up to lend to Saul and there were 2. Everybody else waited till power came up. Cell towers don't have power backup in Baja like in the States.

bajabuddha - 9-15-2014 at 09:36 AM

There is a major disturbance 3-400 miles south of the Cape, but doesn't have circulation; looks more like a chubasco for now. However, there is Tropical Low 97E still down in the Tuanapec Express that is at least a week out, but on the same track as Odile was when I started this post on Sept. 8th.

Fair warning; Yogi is still right. It ain't over yet.

My heart's with each and everyone in harm's way right now; there's going to be much work to be done and relief needed all up and down Baja. Odile is tied for the worst hurricane to ever hit Baja.

Whale-ista - 9-15-2014 at 09:42 AM

Juanita - 9-15-2014 at 09:57 AM

Rain began in San Ignacio about 8 a.m., not a goose drownder, but good. We had an hour's pause and now, 11 a.m. the rain has begun again, pretty heavy and steady. Power was out for an hour but on again now. Someone is out in this, working. Good luck, all.

willyAirstream - 9-15-2014 at 10:41 AM

Mulege - steady wind at maybe 30 - 40mph, steady light rain, no city water, internet slow, power ok. Radio trucks telling everyone to go to higher ground, most of the stores have sold out of the basics. And now we wait....

Willy you have to be on higher ground ? Has Serenidad evacuated?

willyAirstream - 9-15-2014 at 11:21 AM

Joe, everyone on the rio has evacuated, the Oasis, Serenidad, Cuesta Real etc. I am in my new place, more or less out of the flood zone, but if it is as bad as it sounds, I could get flooding here.
Winds now up to 50 - 60, medium rainfall rapid cloud movement. And the cops let me drive to move peoples stuff to higher ground :)

I saw you out 'n about this morning and figured you got a hall pass from Mulege's Finest. Good, and thanks for helping everybody like you do!
Are you now at the old lumberyard just past Saul's? I've seen your jeep there. It's parked ok and will probably be ok, but I've personally seen that area flood a few times. Take care and don't chance anything and wait 'til it's too late to get out.
Abrazos 'bro.

willyAirstream - 9-15-2014 at 12:24 PM

Norm,

Looks like all the boats came out with no major damage. For me, the canopy blew off. The marina staff reinforced my lines and looks like they also removed my seats. My in law says he did not see any major specific damage on a quick view. Let's hope the best for you.

The malecon was heavily damaged and will take a long time to repair. He said he was saddened to see so much damage everywhere.

I will post photos when he gets Internet.

Los Cabos airport isn't looking too good.. almost unreal how damaged it got.

PHOTO REMOVED BECAUSE IT'S A DIFFERENT AIRPORT.
link to original photo: http://www.itravel-cabo.com/news/cabo-news/cabo-airport-tras...

EDIT: You know.. what part of the airport even is that? It's not the old terminal.. and it looks too large to be the new terminal, yet the photo is supposedly of the airport this morning.

I just spoke with my friend who was at my house in Rancho Nuevo (Pescadero). Its very grim there. He said the Pemex in Pescadero is gone, houses are collapsed, roofs gone, hardly any trees left standing, no power poles at all. The cell network is barely working, he will call me with info when he can. This is very bad.

Across Baja and heading for Tucson...?

The 2 pm forecast map shows it near La Purisima and heading to Arizona in a few days.

Thanks-- the marina is well located and I know the staff is vigilant. Now if I can just get a report on the house I'll maybe able to get a good night's sleep. Thanks again-- Norm

Definitely pretty bad. I know of at least 2 friends whose houses are a total loss and many others with missing roofs, flooding, etc. Arroyos are running- saw video from a friend Playitas showing huge stretches of area covered by running water- not just down in the arroyos, but kind of all over the place. So Playitas is probably inaccessible until the runoff diminishes. The wall at the baseball stadium collapsed, along with a few other buildings. Almost all of the washingtonias in the huerta are snapped off or completely knocked down. Many other trees big & small are down too-whole look of the town will be changed for years by this.
