I have sat on the river bank near Loma Azul many times, and watched the Kara Kara's fishing.

They fly along at around 200 feet looking for the fish. Once they home in on one, they go into a vertical dive with their wings tucked in. They are now going very fast, but it does not faze them. They pull out in what looks to be at least a 5g turn, then hurtle along just above the water with one claw skimming the surface. They get to the fish and the other claw snaps out like a spring blade, usually catching the fish by the gills.

If it's a big one they slow almost to a stop before putting maximum lift on with their wing muscles.

I can sit and watch them all day!!

wow - how'd they get those photos with the pre-dive halibut, then halibut catch? Beautiful country where it was shot. Alaska?
